True, and not just in MMA. In Teddy Atlas' book he talks about a young Mike Tyson doing them before he started his amateur career.

Unsanctioned matches at the semi-pro level ate not that uncommon for many reasons, from not passing the physical for "licensing" to waiting on your "fighters passport", to making some quick cash.

The bikers used to hold illegal full contact fight matches on the rooftop parking lot of Harlem Irving Plaza years ago. I never went to one, but I knew a girl who had fighters from them at her parties.

This was back in 1995 or so, before the UFC was big. No one there was from Martial arts clubs. I think it was friendly biker clubs getting together and brawling for prize money. It gave them something to do, and kept thier brawling skills at thier peak.
Those that are the most sucessful are also the biggest failures. The difference between them and the rest of the failures is they keep getting up over and over again, until they finally succeed.

No, not the same at all. The smokers are not illegal, the gym holding them invites the trainers from the gyms he wants there. Atlas had problems at first because they felt he was lying about Tyson's real age. Tyson was VERY large for his age. The trainers and the guy holding them matchup the guys by age, experience, weight, etc. They are not free-for-alls. The smokers are often taped, it's a good chance for trainers to see how their fighters perform in an actual fight in front of a crowd. These 'backwater' fights are as real as the Kumite. BS stories told by a liar.

Read Atlas' book. It's titled Atlas - From the Street to the Ring: A Son's Struggle to Become a Man. He talks of the smokers in there.

I wouldn't even waste my time. You are trying to prove to a school kid that Barney is not real, and just some guy in a purple dinosaur costume

Truth be told, I'm hoping to start a new thread about illegal fights here. I suspect that, just like the MMA & Steroids thread, we'll be seeing more of these. I'm just finding a tidy place to put them.

Underground fights happen. Just no way like Hollywood or these 'underground champs' would have you believe. You go ahead and believe guys like Frank Dux and Rudy Abel, I'll believe guys like Teddy Atlas.

And I disagreed with Mr Fox saying that smokers were just like these 'Backwater fights', just with a different name. They are not same by any stretch of the imagination.

Did I say I believed in Frank Dux..NO Did I mention Rudy..no It could just his choice of words, calling it a Backwater match. Just as illelgal as I said about pitbull fighting or c.o.c.k fighting. You have a bad habit of bring up Rudy alot, when none says anything about him. I can call them Backwater matches as well. I never said it was like Hollywood either did I?
