Regardless of the outcome, I know it has to be a very tough time for all parties involved.

Yup, I agree with you 100% Mickey, and I think you did exactly right both to post the link & to label it as "unofficial" (my husband and I actually had a good laugh about that when we found it--unofficial is an apt description of my blog--I hope never to be Official, lol). It's a beautiful (and sometimes scary) aspect of our wired world that we can instantly access so many different takes and pieces of information on events as they are unfolding, and I never think it's a bad thing to post links that shed new light or even just let folks in on what other people are thinking and saying about something. And far be it from me to complain about new traffic to my blog! Ha ha!

Anyway, as a result of the link, I saw a spike in traffic to my blog and then people started contacting me with comments and questions (nothing wrong there, either--just a natural result--in fact, it was heartening to learn that so many people care so deeply). It just felt right at that point to redirect attention back to this forum, which feels like the better place for this discussion.

So definitely no criticism of you.

The events have already had far-reaching consequences and of course they are not done unfolding yet. I feel for those closest to everything. And I fear for the future of our society--any way you look at it, things are pretty screwed up.

And part of the screwed-up-ness of it is how scary & emotional it is to talk about it. I posted my gut reaction in the entry linked to by Mickey, and then someone sent me a link to a news story that seemed to lend more credence to the accusations, and then I got scared and thought, geez, what if he really is guilty, and then I got worried that I'm as bad as anyone else leaping to conclusions about him, and ... geez, it just gets so confusing and wound up.

For a long time, my husband and I have had a policy that he NEVER hires a female babysitter in my absence, I ALWAYS drive female babysitters home, and he doesn't even tutor our neighbor's daughter unless I am in the room with them. This is not out of any fear that he, my beloved and honorable husband, would ever do anything inappropriate, but rather out of fear that he might be *accused* of anything inappropriate.

How sad is that? And yet, it is the world we appear to live in. I was SHOCKED to hear that someone could actually be accused of sexual impropriety in a room full of other adults and children... I mean, is it really to the point that men can't even come into contact with a girl in public, in a lighted room, without accusations rolling forth? Or is it that we've come to a point where a revered, established, respected man actually will commit such an atrocity in a lighted room full of adults?

Scary stuff. I sure as heck hope, and still believe, that he is innocent. But if he is, in some ways that is a sadder commentary for our society as a whole than the contrary would be. Gosh, what a mess.

I just wanted to let everyone know that the posts on my blog related to Frank DeMaria have been removed, for the reasons outlined in an earlier post here. I've also removed the related post titled "Re-framing the Conversation," which explained more about my views on the matter and also my reason for removing my posts. However, I'm pasting the content of that post here, for anyone who wants to understand the reasons:

It's a sad time for the hundreds of students who have studied under kung fu Master Frank DeMaria. Serious accusations have arisen of inappropriate treatment of young female students. Though I have met him only a few times, and our family does not study under him directly (our school's master is Eric Sbarge, who in turn studied under Frank DeMaria), the news was devastating. Even more devastating it must be to those close to him and his school.

I posted an emotional and from-the-hip response here in this blog right after I heard the news, and have been overwhelmed and amazed by the number of people who have read and responded (mostly privately) to that post. I am heartened to know that people care so much, and also saddened to know that so many people have been hurt. If the accusations are a misunderstanding, then a man's career and family have been badly damaged. And if they are correct, then many more people have been injured. It is a terrible story, no matter the outcome, no matter the angle.

However, on reflection and after many conversations, I have come to the conclusion that my blog is not the right place for this dialog to take place. I am not an expert on these events by any means, just a concerned bystander who happens to write a lot. Furthermore, although the conversation touches on many matters that are close to my heart, it is not strictly relevant to the upbeat, homeschooling, suburban-homesteading themes of this blog and could easily overwhelm those elements to their detriment.

I'll leave these posts live for a while, at least, and I'm happy to converse in private with anyone who wishes to talk. Thank you very much to all my readers who have borne with me through this, and to the folks who have contacted me with additional details and thoughts.

Look for a new post on "the Grocery Store as Classroom"--coming soon!

Judge Finalizes Death Sentence in Fla. Slayings
PENSACOLA, Fla. (AP) — A judge sentenced a former karate instructor to death on Thursday for leading a group of men dressed like ninjas to kill a wealthy Florida couple while their special-needs children slept or cowered nearby.

A jury had reccommended in October that Patrick Gonzalez Jr. be executed, but a judge must impose death sentences under Florida law.

"I didn't do it," Patrick Gonzalez Jr. said after Judge Nickolas Geeker read the findings that led him to affirm the jury's reccomendation.

Geeker said he supported a sentence of death for Gonzalez because he "was clearly the ringleader and the person who directed the other defendants" to the 2009 killings of Byrd and Melanie Billings.

The judge said evidence in the double-murder and home invasion trial showed that the couple died in terror and likely feared the men would also execute the young children in the home.

"They would have assumed their minor children would not have been left behind as witnesses," Geeker said.

The Billingses had nine adopted children between the ages of 5 and 12, all with special needs including fetal alcohol syndrome and autism.

Billings family members sobbed as Geeker recounted details of the crime during the sentencing.

The couple's adult daughter who is raising the nine younger children later praised the death sentence.

"We witnessed the legal system working the way it was intended to," Ashley Markham said.

Prosecutors said Gonzalez was motivated by his believe that the Billings had millions in cash in a safe at the west Escambia County home.

The men took an unopened safe from the home that contained nothing of value, but a second safe that wasn't stolen had $164,000 in cash, court records show.

Gonzalez is the only defendant to face the death penalty in the case. Two others testified against Gonzalez. Trials of the participants are ongoing.

yeah but it sucks the others wont die too... they turn on eachother so they get to live... they are just as big scumbags as the ringleader... i know we have to make deals with crooks to get other crooks but still... i sure hope they absolutely needed their testamony to prove their case... cause to just make it easier and less work and execute one guy, and not the others, isnt cool at all...

    Trent sentenced to 21 years

This is the person who brought us the term 'karate rape'. See previous.
Martial arts instructor gets 21 years in prison for having sex with three female students

    Young

VALHALLA – Former New York City cop and martial arts instructor Trent Young, 42, of the Town of Wallkill was sentenced to over 21 years in federal prison for his transportation of three girls across state lines to have sex. Young had operated a martial arts studio in his Wallkill home as well as one in West Milford, New Jersey, called Iron Tiger Martial Arts.

According to the indictment to which he pled guilty and statements made in court, Young brought a 14-year-old girl from Middletown to his New Jersey business and had sex with her. He brought a second girl, who was 16, to Iron Tiger and had sex with her and in another incident he drove a 14-year-old girl from her home in Brooklyn to his home in the Town of Wallkill and had sex with her.

At the time of his arrest, police said he convinced the girls that having sex was part of their rite of passage as they rose through the martial arts levels. In imposing sentence, US District Court Judge Kenneth Karas said the “extraordinarily high” sentence was appropriate in light of what Young did to the girls he chose as his victims. “The magnitude of the conduct here outweighs the medical issues” faced by Young, said the judge.

Young was sentenced in the prison ward of Westchester Medical Center where he is being treated for terminal cancer.

When I taught my YWCA Taiji class, I was abused badly by those girls in my class. They all love to touch my body and said, "as hard as rock". "man of steel", "I want one", ... Maybe I should file lawsuit against those girls back then so there won't be always "women against men" stories. It's not fair IMO.

the difference is that lots of men dont mind sexual harassment... ironic how when a man does it too a woman its scary and criminal... when a woman does it to a man its like porn...

i know a guy who pressed sexual harassment charges on a woman... his boss... poor guy... she was quite the maneater... very wealthy and not so attractive... have fun going back to work after that fiasco...

Not too sure about that. Oneday I taught Taiji An (double pushing) in my YWCA class, I used both palms to push on a girl's shoulders, she asked, "Do you suppose to push on my chest?" I didn't have the courage to push on her chest in front of others.
