    Follow up on Harumafuji

    December 20, 2017 8:18 pm JST
Sumo: JSA begins disciplinary measures over Harumafuji scandal

TOKYO (Kyodo) -- The Japan Sumo Association on Wednesday began doling out disciplinary measures in the wake of yokozuna Harumafuji's retirement following his assaulut on another wrestler.

Following meetings of a JSA advisory body, the Yokozuna Deliberation Council, and the association's board of directors, JSA Chairman Hakkaku announced that two yokozuna would be punished for failing to act when Harumafuji injured lower-ranked wrestler Takanoiwa.

Hakuho, who has won more grand sumo tournaments than any wrestler in history, will not receive his salary for January, and will have his pay cut in half in February. Fellow yokozuna Kakuryu will not be paid in January.

The council, which said Harumafuji's acts would have merited his being asked to retire, also recommended Hakuho and Kakuryu be reprimanded for failing to prevent trouble at the incident that occured during a regional tour.

A report on the investigation by the association's crisis management panel that probed the case was filed before the meeting.

Masato Kitamura, chairman of the advisory council, said after the meeting there is a need to lay out clear standards for similar cases that may occur in the future.

"Hakuho and Kakuryu were not able to stop the incident from happening and being taken too far. Their responsibility should not be taken lightly. They should be given a strong warning," Kitamura said.

"Harumafuji, a yokozuna who should be a role model to all wrestlers, showed abusive behavior that led to injury. A yokozuna must bear this heavy responsibility," he said.

A decision on punishment for Takanoiwa's stablemaster Takanohana, who failed to fulfill his required reporting duties as the regional tour director, was delayed by the JSA directors.

According to investigative sources, Harumafuji allegedly beat Takanoiwa with his palms and a karaoke machine remote control when Mongolian wrestlers gathered for a drinking session that lasted from the night of Oct. 25 into the early hours of Oct. 26 at a bar in Tottori, western Japan.

Takanoiwa suffered head wounds that required about 10 days to heal and filed a police report on Oct. 29. He was diagnosed at a hospital in Fukuoka with a suspected fracture at the base of his skull, among other injuries.

The investigative sources said Harumafuji is believed to have been angered by Takanoiwa's inattention while Hakuho was giving him advice.

Hakkaku volunteered to work the final three months of his term as chairman without pay in order to accept responsibility for the scandal, while Harumafuji's stablemaster Isegahama will step down from the JSA's board of directors.

The chairman agreed with the advisory board's statement that Harumafuji should have been asked to retire, but said that since he had left voluntarily, no further punishment would be meted out.

74? Mahjong? Talk about old skool.

Gongfu trainer jailed, fined for using martial arts gym as gaming house

SINGAPORE - A gongfu trainer who used a Chinese martial arts gym as a common gaming house was jailed for 10 days and fined $10,000 on Tuesday (Aug 22).

Tan Soh Tin, 74, admitted to allowing the public to access the Geylang Lorong 15 premises to play mahjong on Feb 14, 2017.

Prosecution officer Kelvin Lee Ming Woei said that acting on information received, police raided the premises and arrested Tan, two co-accused and four others that day.

Investigations showed that Tan had rented the premises for $2,000 a month as a Chinese martial arts gym known as Master Tan’s Gym.

Tan also set up two mahjong tables there to allow any member of the public to have access and have a game of mahjong. Tan would then receive some revenue from the mahjong sessions conducted to cover part of his rental cost.

Assistant Superintendent Lee said that to manage the sessions, Tan enlisted the help of the two co-accused, who would collect $3 from each mahjong player for each round of game played. In one round, a total of $12 would be collected from all the players.

The two co-accused, Chua Thian Lye, 66, and Sim Kim Huat, 65, will be dealt with next Wednesday (Aug 30).

They admitted that they were playing a game of mahjong and said that they were introduced by word of mouth to the mahjong sessions.

The stakes involved were about $100 to $200 per game.

The other four players were fined between $1,000 and $2,000 each for gaming.

Tan could have been fined up to $50,000 and jailed for up to three years for the offence.

    Harumafuji has been fined

    More here and here.

$4400 USD may seem paltry, but he lost face, and sumo is a game of honor. At least, it's supposed to be so.

Japan sumo champion Harumafuji fined over assault

Harumafuji has said his life will be "sharply different" now

Former sumo grand champion Harumafuji has been fined 500,000 yen (£3,280; $4,400) in Japan after being found guilty of assault.

The 33-year-old wrestler from Mongolia admitted hitting a junior wrestler over the head with a karaoke machine remote control during a night out in Tottori in October.

He has already apologised and stepped down over the incident.

The case rocked the world of sumo, a hugely popular ceremonial sport.

The assault on fellow Mongolian Takanoiwa happened while they were out drinking with other wrestlers in a bar in the western city.

The grand champion is reported to have been angered that his countryman was checking his phone while being given advice, seeing it as showing a lack of respect.

The latter was admitted to hospital with concussion and a fractured skull.

Two others involved in the incident have faced disciplinary action and Takanoiwa's stablemaster - as coaches are known - has been demoted for allegedly delaying reporting the incident.

Harumafuji started his career in Japan at the age of 16 and was promoted to grand champion or yokozuna - sumo's highest rank - in 2012.

He released a statement in late December, Reuters news agency reports, saying his life "is now set to be sharply different from what I thought it would be".

"I have a feeling of chagrin, to be honest. But the responsibility is all mine."

    What is sumo?

    GETTY IMAGES
Japan's much-loved traditional sport dates back hundreds of years

Two wrestlers face off in an elevated circular ring and try to push each other to the ground or out of the ring

There are six tournaments each year in which each wrestler fights 15 bouts

Wrestlers, who traditionally go by one fighting name, are ranked and the ultimate goal is to become a yokozuna (grand champion)

What other scandals clouded the sport recently?

Last year, a wrestler and his coach had to pay nearly $300,000 to a fellow fighter whom they had allegedly abused so badly he lost sight in one eye, according to reports

Several wrestlers have been implicated in match-fixing scandals and links between sumo and the mafia-like yakuza crime syndicates

Another Mongolian grand champion retired from the sport in 2010 after reports of his involvement in a drunken brawl

In 2007 a sumo stablemaster received six years in prison after a novice was beaten to death by older wrestlers

The training for Sumo in Japan has always been pretty abusive. Not necessarily fractured skull-abusive, but abusive, nonetheless.

“Based on the allegations in this case, and the fact suspect Gonzales has trained and mentored kids at the boxing gym for the past ten years, detectives believe there may have been other children in the past that were sexually assaulted by suspect Gonzales,” the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Office said in a statement, according to FOX11.

Gonzales represented the United States at the 1984 Olympics in Los Angeles, taking home the light flyweight gold medal in boxing.

Most recently, he served as the head coach at the Eddie Heredia Boxing Club where he worked for 10 years as an employee for the Los Angeles County Parks and Recreation Department, authorities said.

The Los Angeles County Parks and Recreation Department did not immedately respond to Fox News' request for comment.

"This is shocking. It’s surprising," instructor Adrian Villanueva told reporters. "He’s a good coach. He’s always here for the kids and, you know, anyone who needs advice."

Gonzales is currently held at the Men’s Central Jail in downtown Los Angeles on $575,000 bail.

    WEST ASHLEY SC (WCSC) -
The owner and chief instructor of a Lowcountry martial arts school accused of sexually assaulting two of his students acknowledged that it was inappropriate for him to massage one of the victims, according to newly released court documents.

James Michael Buchen of Mount Pleasant was given a $300,000 bond on charges of second-degree sexual conduct with a minor and third-degree sexual conduct with a minor.

During Buchen's bond hearing on Wednesday, the victims spoke out saying Buchen was once like a father figure until he took advantage of them.

The girls said they are speaking out because they don't want anyone else to go through what they have.

Multiple other girls on the martial arts team were present with their families during the hearing.

Buchen is not allowed to have contact with children without an adult present and he cannot have contact with the victims.

An affidavit released on Wednesday states that during a phone call on Tuesday between one of the victims and Buchen, Buchen acknowledged massaging the victim during camp and knew it was inappropriate.

"He also acknowledged she was young at the time of the incident," court records states.

According to authorities, the victim said she was intimidated by Buchen and afraid to tell anyone what happened to her.

Investigators say between June 24, 2013 and July 5, 2013, the two victims, identified as two 15-year-old's, attended martial arts camp through Buchen Martial Arts on Leinbach Drive.

According to a police report, after lunch, participants typically watched movies and rested.

"One afternoon one of the victims was resting in the back half of the room when Buchen approached her and put her head in his lap," CPD officials said."He began to massage her shoulders and then put his hands down her shirt and beneath her sports bra."

Police say the second 15 year-old victim told police that one afternoon during camp the suspect sat next to her, put his hands down her pants and then her underwear and touched her inappropriately.

"Both victims began taking karate lessons from the suspect when they were about 10-years-old," police said.

    The investigation is ongoing.

Buchen was locked up at the Al Cannon Detention Center.

Yea. I think I've spoken somewhere on the forums about the issue (as I see it) of MA schools operating as day care centers w/o having to go through the same licensing as a day care center needs to have.

    Unnamed Candle Puncher in China

He Was Trying Out Kung Fu Moves, Accidentally Set 40 Bikes On Fire

He Was Trying Out Kung Fu Moves, Accidentally Set 40 Bikes On Fire

The boy left the complex without putting out a burning candle which caused the fire

Officials in China have discovered the source of a mysterious fire last week that destroyed 40 electronic bikes.

It was a young boy "obsessed" with martial arts, CGTN reported.

Surveillance footage has revealed that the fire was a result of negligence by a boy who was trying out Kung Fu moves inside what appeared to be a parking complex. CCTV video shows the boy, unsupervised by an adult, lighting up a candle kept on an e-bike. Trying to recreate Kung Fu moves seen on screen, he thrusts his hands towards the candle, presumably to put it out with his palms.

After a few attempts, the Kung Fu enthusiast loses interest and leaves the area without putting out the burning candle.

The bike catches fire and the flames quickly grow bigger, soon spreading across the entire complex.

The mishap occurred on the night of January 1 in northwest China's Hanyin county. Video also shows firemen tackling the huge blaze. The following day, only the charred remains of the bikes were found.

The boy's parents may now have to shell out $15,000 to compensate for the damage done, the police said. No person was reported injured in the incident.

Yes, indeed, we've discussed that idea here before. I agree that regulation of some sort should be enforced, even though it would wreck our economy for a while because it would force so many schools to close or charge more to cover legal registration fees and such.

West Aukland Hunting & Fishing store robber

WATCH: Man tries to rob store with hilarious kung fu skills

A MAN showing off his kung-fu moves and boxing poses has been caught on camera trying to rob a Hunting and Fishing store in Westgate, Auckland.

CCTV footage posted on January 19 shows the man entering the store and looking through numerous items before launching into a barrage of punches in thin air.

An alleged thief who entered a Hunting and Fishing store in West Auckland was caught on CCTV throwing Rocky Balboa and kung-fu moves before attempting to take off with goods.
    Photo - CCTV

The man, wearing a white T-shirt and shorts, is then seen crouching down behind a rack of store items before allegedly stuffing his pants and T-shirt with goods and swiftly leaving the store.

Hunting and Fishing Westgate posted the footage on Facebook, warning locals and shoppers to be "aware of this master criminal working in the Westgate area".

"We recommend you do not approach this individual as he is clearly a kung fu master and should be considered extremely dangerous," the store said with more than a hint of sarcasm.

The store, which posted the video to Facebook, has dubbed over the CCTV video with footage and music from Rocky Balboa and the Pink Panther.

The store said that police had intercepted the man as he tried to flee the store. However police told the Herald last night they did not have a record of the incident.

Action Against Actress/‘Heiress’ Not a SLAPP—Court of Appeal

Panel Says Her Allegations That a Non-Public Figure Is a ‘*****’ and’ Dope-Dealer’ Does Not Give Rise to a Special Motion to Strike; Involves No ‘Public Issue'
    By a MetNews Staff Writer

    — Photo by Trevor Adams Bauer-Griffin

Actress Zeta Graff, who married into the family that owns the London-based firm of Graff Diamonds, holds up a display of precious stones. In her British divorce action against François Graff in 2003, she was awarded what was described at the time as “at least” £10 million (British pounds sterling), the equivalent then of about $13.5 million. While she fared well in the British court, Zeta Graff failed to convince the Los Angeles Superior Court or, on Thursday, the Court of Appeal for this district, that an action against her for libel and other torts should be spiked pursuant to her anti-SLAPP motion.

An actress and so-called “diamond heiress” who publicly accused another woman of being a “low class *****” and a drug dealer has failed to persuade the Court of Appeal for this district that a libel/slander action against her should be dismissed as a SLAPP.

Defendant Zeta Graff argued unsuccessfully that Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Holly E. Kendig erred in rejecting her special motion to strike on the ground that one of the requisites under Code of Civil Procedure §425.16—that the action be based on protected speech “in connection with a public issue”—was absent.

Div. Five of the appeals court affirmed on Thursday in an opinion that was not certified for publication. The case will return to the trial court where plaintiff Olivia Vaatete, a bridal consultant and designer, will have the task of proving her causes of action for defamation, as well as false light and intentional and negligent infliction of emotional distress.

    Internet Postings

The case centers on postings by Graff, some vulgar, on Yelp!, Facebook, Twitter and other websites concerning Vaatete.

Vaatete admittedly had an affair with martial arts grand master Taejoon Lee after breaking up with her husband in 1999; the liaison, according to Vaatete and Lee, ended in December 2011; the following year, Graff began dating Lee; despite her suspicions that Lee was maintaining a relationship with Vaatete, she became engaged to marry him in February 2014; she broke it off after becoming convinced that he was cheating on her.

Among her posted allegations against Vaatete are that she “sleeps with other women’s men behind their back and calls herself their ‘concubine’ i.e. their sex *****,” is a “drug dealer and [has] been cheating on her husband...since 1999,” and is a “call girl.”

Graff highlights Vaatete’s affair with Lee, terming her his “drug dealer” and asserting she was “bringing the drugs” to his martial arts school “while visiting ‘to service’ ” him “early mornings.”

    Public’s Asserted Interest

The defendant insisted that she dealt with topics in connection with which the public does have an interest.

In her opinion affirming Kendig’s denial of the anti-SLAPP motion, Acting Justice Kim Dunning, an Orange Superior Court judge sitting on assignment, wrote:

“Although infidelity and adultery may be considered matters of public concern, nothing in Graff’s motion suggests that private conduct by Vaatete and Lee similarly captures the public’s interest. Nor does Vaatete’s ownership of a business open to the public, for that reason alone, place her in the public eye where her conduct directly affects individuals other than Graff or Lee.”

    Dunning went on to say:

“Graff’s alleged statements were not made in the context of a public interest issue. They were personal attacks on Vaatete, impugning her character and accusing her of criminal behavior. As the trial court aptly observed, ‘the laws of defamation...would be undermined if accusations of cheating were always protected speech simply because the public might have a broader interest in the issue of cheating and adultery.’ ”

    Second Prong

Kendig found that “even if the statements were a matter of public concern,” satisfying the first prong of the anti-SLAPP statute, “Plaintiff has adequately shown a probability of prevailing on the claims,” the second prong.

She rejected Graff’s representation that the bulk of the allegations were true and had been admitted. Graff asserted:

“Plaintiff admitted to a multi-year sexual relationship with Lee where she would visit him in his room at the school for sexual liaisons, that the two were not married to each other but instead were married to others, that she fit the traditional definition of ‘concubine,’ and received free marital arts lessons for herself and her children from…Lee” and that she “provided him with drugs on several occasions,” delivering it to him “at the school.”

Kendig pointed to declarations by Graff and Lee. Graff swore that “my romantic relationship with my ex-husband had ended before I began a romantic relationship with Mr. Lee, I never cheated on my husband”; Lee insisted that “I began a romantic relationship with Zeta Graff after I ended my romantic relationship with Ms. Vaatete” and that “I had no relationship or communication with Ms. Vaatete during the time of my romantic relationship with Ms. Graff and that I was faithful to Ms. Graff.”

    Other ‘Facts’ Disputed

The judge said it was not clear that Vaatete knew that Lee was still married to a woman in Korea, if he was.

    Kendig continued:

“While Defendant asserts that Plaintiff admitted that she was a ‘concubine’ as that term was defined at her deposition…, Defendant’s definition does not encompass cheating on a spouse. Rather, the definition offered was: ‘A sexual partner, especially a woman, to whom one is not or cannot be married.’

“Additionally, there is no basis to conclude that by admitting that she was a ‘concubine’ that Plaintiff also admitted the other terms leveled against her, including ‘hooker’ and ‘call girl.’ For that reason, it cannot be said that the veracity of all the terms used against her were admitted by Plaintiff.”

Vaatete acknowledged that at times, she picked up marijuana for Lee. Kendig commented:

“Because drug dealing is often associated with selling drugs for money, and opposed to picking up marijuana for a boyfriend, it cannot be said that Plaintiff admitted to being a drug dealer.”

    She went on to say:

“[B]ecause the accusations of Plaintiff being a prostitute and a hooker are based on arguably false facts, Defendant cannot assert, at this juncture, that her statements are mere opinion.”

    No Ambiguity

Among other rejected contentions was that no liability could attach to the allegation that Vaatete would go to the martial arts school “to service” Lee because it was ambiguous. She declared that “an average person reading the statement…would clearly understand it to mean that she provides sex to him.”

On appeal, the finding that the first prong of the statute was not met being determinative, Dunning said that “we do not reach the second.”

The case is Vaatete v. Graff, B276836.

Tamar G. Arminak represented Graff and Scott Dinsmore and Brett A. Stroud of Dinsmore and Sandelmann acted for Vaatete.

    Connection to Diamonds

Graff, who was born in Greece, has acquired the description in the press as a “diamond heiress” though the term “heiress” connotes acquisition of assets as the result of a death. Her former husband, François Graff, whom she divorced in Great Britain in 2003 on the ground of infidelity, is still alive.

Son of the founder of Graff Diamonds, an international firm, he has been chief executive officer of the company since July 2004 and its director since 2012.

The High Court of England and Wales awarded Zeta Graff an amount which her solicitor described as being in excess of £10 million which, at that time, would have been about $13.5 million in American dollars.

    Sues Paris Hilton

Graff was herself the plaintiff in a Los Angeles Superior Court defamation action in 2005. She sought $10 million from hotel heiress Paris Hilton for allegedly spreading “vicious lies” about her to the New York Post.

Hilton’s fiancé at the time, Paris Latsis, was another heir to a fortune, that one relating to a Greek shipping line. Graff had formerly dated him.

The newspaper reported that Graff, encountering Hilton and her fiancé dancing at a nightclub, went “berserk,” attempting to strangle her and rip a $4 million diamond necklace off her neck.

The defamation action was settled out of court.

    Aaron St Omer

Martial arts teacher took drugs and sex toys to meet ‘child’ he met on Grindr

Aaron St Omer denies a child sex offence and three counts of possessing drugs with intent to supply A martial arts teacher took crystal meth and sex toys to a pub where he thought he would be meeting a child he spoke to online, a court heard.

The ‘child’ was actually an undercover police officer who says Aaron St Omer was carrying a bag containing *****s and three different drugs when he arrived at the pub.

The 32-year-old, a martial arts teacher from Woodford Green, east London, was first alerted to police after allegedly sending a string of sickening messages to a man on dating app Grindr.

In one, Omer allegedly said he wanted to ‘rape kids’.

Under the username NoLimitRentMe, he told the Grindr user, who is a witness in the case: ‘I want master, sadistic, sick, extreme ****ed up enough to watch some torture, capable of making me rape family, kidnapped friends or kids.’

The witness told the court he was ‘horrified’ and decided to try and discover Omer’s identify to forward him to the police.

When he asked Omer if he ‘brings his fantasies to reality’, the defendant allegedly replied ‘yes’.

‘You raped kids?’ the witness asked.

Omer is said to have replied: ‘Everything including the victim are provided.

‘They spray liquid latex in me all over and told what to do.

If it is permanently damaged then they would help obliterate the body if it let go too soon.

‘I injected it, chemmed it up, was made to inject my blood into it.’

The witness told the court he was disturbed by Omer using the word ‘it’ to describe a child.

After the witness passed the messages to police, then gave them access to his Grindr account.

An officer known as ‘Kev’ used it to arrange a meeting with Omer, using encrypted messaging service Wicker.

Omer believed Kev had a child.

When he turned up at the pub, he was arrested with three different drugs, some potentially lethal.

The drugs included two grams of crystal meth, GBL, which is used as a recreational intoxicant with effects similar to alcohol, and chloroethylcathinone, a stimulant designer drug.

Christopher Hewertson, prosecuting, said some of the drugs were potentially lethal.

Teenager told teacher she'd 'see her on the news' as an Isis nurse He told the court: ‘The defendant is very keen to have a meeting with Kev because he established that Kev has a child who can be abused.

‘There are no real children involved thankfully in this case. It’s a deliberate sting.

‘They were drugs to be supplied to the child he thought he was going to meet.’

Aaron St Omer, of Montalt Road, Woodford, ran a security company Jiko-Bouei Defence and Security and describes himself as a Karate consultant on his Facebook page.

He denies one count of facilitating a child sex offence and three counts of possessing drugs with intent to supply.
These just get darker and darker.

    Another crappy kid's teacher

Some teachers just plain forget that they are teaching kids. Having taught kids myself, I can understand the frustration, but it's YOUR CHOICE to teach kids, so that's no justification for such extreme reactions.

Martial arts teacher 'opened fire on children with automatic BB gun for not doing exercise properly'
Peter Sheridan allegedly sprayed the children, aged 10 to 12, with pellets as they dived behind a curtain to avoid them

A kickboxing teacher opened fire on children with an automatic BB gun during a lesson, a court heard.

Martial arts enthusiast Peter Sheridan sprayed the 10- to 12-year-olds with 70 pellets as they dived behind a curtain to avoid them, a jury was told.

He allegedly ordered the boys and girls to run faster as he fired at them - hitting three of them and leaving them with small marks on their bodies.

The shootings happened at the end of a class at the Quayside Leisure Centre in Kingsbridge, south Devon, Exeter Crown Court was told.

The jury have been shown the realistic looking rifle and magazine, which were seized from Sheridan's home after some of the parents complained.

International kickboxer Sheridan, of Kingsbridge, south Devon, denies possession of an imitation firearm and three counts of assault by battery.

He denies firing at the six children in his class at the time or hitting them and told the police the gun was a toy.

The 46-year-old claimed he dropped a box of pellets which were later found by staff.

Kelly Scrivener, prosecuting, said the six children went to the class in December 2016.

Sheridan then allegedly became frustrated at a child who was not following instructions.

She said he sent his 18-year-old son Connaire to his car to fetch the gun and then opened fire.

Miss Scrivener said: "He said words to the effect 'if you don't do the exercise properly I will shoot you'.

"He then discharged the gun, firing ball bearings around the sports hall towards the children.

"Not surprisingly the children cowered behind a curtain and he started hitting the curtain with white plastic 6mm pellets. They were very small and fired in automatic or semi automatic mode."

Staff later recovered 70 pellets from the hall and one of the children took one home with her. The gun was seized along with a magazine with 60 pellets left in it.

Miss Scrivener said Sheridan had no reasonable excuse and should have realised that firing it at the children risked causing them injury.

The parent of one child told the jury he watched as children ran around the hall trying to avoid the pellets.

“They were in shock, they were in pain because he was shooting a BB gun several times,” he said.

He said Sheridan ‘didn’t seem to care’

The children ended the lesson by bowing to Sheridan and the police were called after the children got home, the court heard.

    The trial continues.

oh, technically an 'Air Soft' weapon. Still no excuse for the behavior but I had to click to see if he really had an automatic 'BB' gun which would be a whole different thing.
