Surprise is box office surprise in China

A week before its official opening, Surprise 萬萬沒想到 is already setting records at the box office with preview screenings.

With an average screening share of 20.4%, the Bona Film Group Co Ltd 博納影業集團有限公司 release earned RMB112 million (US$17.3 million) from approximately 3.94 million admissions from preview shows on Saturday and Sunday. The film is the feature-length version of the web series of the same name.

Maintaining a screening share of approximately 17.6%, Point Break remained in second place with RMB66.7 million (US$10.3 million) from approximately 1.96 million between Friday and Sunday. The action film has earned RMB196 million (US$30.4 million).

XU Haofeng 徐浩峰's The Master 師父 opened in fourth place, earning RMB32.1 million (US$4.97 million) from approximately 1.03 million over four days. The action drama won Best Action Choreography at the Golden Horse Awards 金馬獎 last month.

Opening two years late, Ron HOWARD's Rush (2013) earned RMB11.3 million (US$1.75 million) over three days. The racing drama had a screening share of approximately 9.09%.

The Martian has made RMB561 million (US$86.9 million). Fall in Love Like a Star 怦然星動 has made RMB146 million (US$22.6 million). Impossible 不可思異 has earned RMB97.2 million (US$15.0 million).

In addition to Surprise, Mojin: The Lost Legend 尋龍訣 (formerly known as The Ghouls) opens this week.


In Hong Kong, Point Break climbed to the top of the box office, earning HK$2.46 million (US$317,000) between Thursday and Sunday. The action film has made HK$7.67 million (US$990,000).

Nick CHEUNG 張家輝's Keeper of Darkness 陀地驅魔人 dropped to second place, earning HK$2.29 million (US$296,000) between Thursday and Sunday. The horror drama has made HK$15.9 million (US$2.05 million).

Burnt is the top new film this weekend in fourth place, making HK$1.27 million (US$163,000) from 25 locations over four days.

From 11 locations, Go Lala Go 杜拉拉追婚記 earned HK$563,000 (US$72,600) over four days.

Japanese romance Initiation Love イニシエーション・ラブ earned HK$534,000 (US$68,900) from nine locations over four days plus several weekends of early previews. The film is distributed locally by My Way Film Co Ltd 名威影業有限公司.

From 12 locations, Legend earned only HK$352,000 (US$45,400) over four days.
