Thumbs up Basic level Tanglang free-sparring by Shifu Tunks ...

    Hi Brendan and All,

This is from your post in the video thread.

I would just like to say that it's great! I love it. Your students are very sharp and very fast with distinct Tanglang flavor over all. Great skills in the stand up and clinch range displayed. You are indeed a great coach and great inspiration IMHO. BTW, I can't post on the MQ forum due to technique difficulty. So I didn't get a chance to congratulate you on your student's participation in the MMA circuit. Seeing this I have no doubt that your student will enjoy great success.

Please keep up the great work and please keep the video coming.

    Warmest regards

Cheers mate! Thanks for the positive feedback. Much appreciated.

Although at times throughout this clip you can definitely see a lot scrappiness (including the annoying 'swatting' that often comes from trying to work open handed techniques and neutralise guards/absorb incoming strikes), I am hoping that some of the distinct flavour of Tanglang creeps in, even if just a little. Having said that, there are many kinds of Tanglang and many interpretations, so I wouldn't be surprised if this appears a little strange to some. The clips featuring head punches will probably appear a lot more recognisable/standard.

Thanks for posting this, it is about time!
I really enjoy this type of action.

Laughed out loud when the yellow shirt took it in the gut.

    Reminded me of something...

Well it is obvious to me that Sam is very comfortable in the ring. You can tell by the way he enters the fighting area, he is very confident. I think there is a lot to be said about having confidence in yourself and your skills. Sam is well conditioned, I can tell he puts a lot of emphasis in conditioning his body, this is important training. IMO, this will give you a big edge over the not so conditioned fellow. As seen in two fights now. I like the way Sam fights, you can tell he has a plan of attack and is tenacious with it. I will leave the technical part of his fight to my seniors here to comment about. One thing that really stands out about Sam is his respect, I can tell he was taught well. A round of Australia`s finest beer to Sam and his teacher!

It's only his second fight, so his technique will get better, he is tenacious but tends to swing with his punches and his kicks don't look as sharp as they can be.
He seems to enjoy the low kick followed by the lead/same side hook, but a drop/step straight punch tends to work better off that low round, then again maybe that is what he is trying to do.
I am sure a few more fights will get the little "rough edges" out.
He's a big boy and looks to have "heavy hands".

    Thanks Jim!

Cheers for that. I'll pass it on to Sam who'll definitely appreciate it, as he pretty much does it all for his school. Look forward to knocking back that beer with you at some stage.

    Ronin,

Thanks for the advice. We'll do our best to incorporate it in his training.
