    Jimmy Wang Yu

    Hi,

Just reading an article in the Sydney Morning Herald about an old HK-Australian film "The man from Hong Kong" starring Jimmy Wang Yu. Just curious but has anyone heard of him before and what style did he train in?

    Cheers,

Jimmy Wang Yu was the big martial arts star in Hong Kong before Bruce Lee hit it big. He is from Taiwan, and had an extensive Judo background, but was mainly an experienced streetfighter in real life. He was also a swimmer who competed in the Olympics in the 1960s, I think.

When you see him on film, in general he does NOT come across as very martial arts-skilled. Although to my knowledge he did direct/star in one very good old-school kung fu film, "Master of the Flying Guillotine." Not to be confused with the Shaw Brothers "Flying Guillotine" starring Chen Kuan-Tai(?).

Also, Jimmy Wang Yu should not be confused with another old-school star, Wang Yu (a.k.a., Huang Yu, Wang Yue, Young Wang Yu, etc.). This other Wang Yu has no resemblance to Jimmy, and is more entertaining and way more skilled.

Amazing! I've seen the movie but didn't recognise him. The article that I read mentioned that he was pretty hardcore. Apparently the stunt man on this particular movie (Man from HK) was supposed to attack Jimmy with a meat cleaver. Jimmy told him not to bother rehersing it with him and just attack him as if was a street fight. The stunt man reckons Jimmy was pretty quick but he only just missed him. It sounded as though he didn't think it was such a smart thing to do in hindsight...

    Cheers,
