Haha...that's hilarious. I saw some of those guys shadow boxing up there and I thought it was just some friends goofing around.
Its surprising that they can get away with actually sparring there...union square park is usually crawling with cops.

And now you've got a quasi military patrolling the subway...

That's very creativeI've had an idea for some time now to dress myself up like Chewbacca and my buddy as the Easter Bunny and have a full contact throw down in a crowded public place.
the only part that I find a bit unseemly is the public spectacle aspect: I mean, what possible reason could one have for training that way except that one wants to be seen by lots of people? I can think off hand of at least 6 other parks in Manhattan alone where you could do something like this and have almost no one observe you (which was how we used to do it "way back when" when we wanted to train outside in warmer weather);
it would seem to me that if one truly were a fighter, one would want as few people to see what one does as possible; unless you are a pro, of course, but that's a bit different in certain ways

Curious, how were they able to get away with that? Honestly, they are tons of cops and folks, who will usually call the cops for any reasons.
In my opinion, any form of pugilism should be kept private that wasn't the proper forum.
no one here seems to appreciate how hard it was to get that pic
The fights happened. So lets get past the where and talk about the how.

tried to post a reply to this earlier but the site stopped responding....
good job to them for stepping up and testing out their stuff
but i still don't see where they get off criticizing sport folks for what they do, there are way more rules in what they're doing (whether clearly stated or not).
personal opinions/observations:
-most of the guys spent more time posing than actually fighting (sparring?)
-looked an awful lot like continuous medium contact sparring, except maybe the kyokushin guys
-the boxing guy wasn't too bad when he was going against the "streetfighter"
-the "muay thai guy" looked to be Ralek trained on SF2: in other words, he had the sagat pose & a leg kick; nothing else
-the jiujitsu guy was obviously not a high level player, but was impressive in how much he was able to apply on folks & do well.
-Jack Dempsey ch1 pg1 Championship FightingWhat would happen if a year-old baby fell from a fourth-floor window onto the head of a burly truck driver, standing on the sidewalk?
It's practically certain that the truckman would be knocked unconscious. He might die of brain concussion or a broken neck.
Even an innocent little baby can become a dangerous missile WHEN ITS BODY-WEIGHT IS SET INTO FAST MOTION.
