    Kwa power mechanics

How do you guys in the southern fist use the kwa to generate power?

There are many ways to utilize the kwa in Nam Kuen.
Here are but a few examples:
When going from say ping ma to ji ng ma for ping kuen, the rear foot drives into the ground, the kwa closes, the waist turns and the power manifests to the hands.
When performing jik chung choy, the fist, elbow, and shoulder are in alignment, and as the weight drops onto the front leg, the kwa opens, again transferring power from the ground, up through the legs, governed by the waist,to be expressed in the hands.
When performing gwa choy in say ping ma, the body drops as the kwa opens.
Yee ji kim yeung ma is "pidgeon toed" and yet there is emphasis placed on the kwa opening.
    During swallowing, the kwa closes
these are some. Food for thought.

So the only ways to utilize the kwa is by the kwa opening and closing by rotating left to right?

Do you always have to drive the rear heel into the ground to activate the kwa?

no, you don't have to drive the rear heel to activate the kwa. It is simply a component to generate power. They work together.
I was referring to the opening and closing of the kwa. Being aware of the kwa, in and of itself is big. Too bad Cjurackpt isn't posting. He could give us a detailed explanation.
If youtake this question to the Tai Chi/internal arts threads, they will no doubt go into some detail on this. Also, try the Wing Chun board-there are several guys there who are very technical oriented as well.

    Thanks!

Do you utilize your kwa the same way that the tai chi guys do, or is it different in the southern arts?

Do you initiate Kwa movements with your lower back and waist muscles? or do you initiate with the hip/pelvis as one piece with the waist and lower back muscles?

is there a segmented movement between when the waist rotate and when the hip rotate?

answer- Hung-Ga has similarities to Yang Family in many ways (at least the way I play Hung-Ga)

yes, more segmented-when shifting. Also when swallowing-segmented yet connected-hard to do, even harder to explain.

Do all kung fu systems use the kwa the same way or are there variations as to how the kwa can be used? For example tai chi uses a rocking back and forth or side to side movement (shifting the weight). where as in wing chun you just rotate on your central axis or COG.

The Kua is the the good term ...the pelvis ,the hip the waist and so on walk the circle in low kua

Kwa or gwa is more a back fist ....u know a kind of back fist in CMA

But thats ok ....before the kua or kwa .....the breathing ...the breath my friend
relax no tension ....ur kwa is free ...

the three internal harmony are very important ....the yi (intention) give the chi (energy) to the li ( muscular action) or the mouvement...thats why you need to ttrain ur body without tension to have the coordination the three external harmonies..shoulder ,hips and feet

train physical attribute .....flexibility ,power ,endurance....with yoga ,weight training and running whatever ....but do it with no tension no stress...dont forget to breath....

No that mandarin for that is GUA, e.g. "to hang."

    The "KUA" is something different.
