    Chungju World Martial Arts Festival

Check out the website - there's an English section. I think this is totally unrelated to the TreX Games. Looks like Korea is the place to be right now...

Chungju World Martial Arts Festival to Kick Off

A martial arts festival will kick off in Chungju, North Chungcheong Province, at Chungju Tangeumdae UN Peace Park from Oct. 2 to 8.

The festival started in 1998 as part of the city's effort to make ``taekkyeon,'' a traditional Korean martial art, more recognized worldwide.

Some 1,210 participants in 51 teams from 28 countries will present their traditional martial arts. The number of teams is double that of last year.

The participating martial arts include karate from Japan, Muay Thai from Thailand, Wushu from China, Savate from France, Sambo from Russia, Capoera from Brazil, and Kalari from India.

Visitors can learn the various international martial arts from participating masters, learn about stunts from stuntmen, and take part in a reenactment of a test for selecting military officials during the Joseon Kingdom (A.D. 1392-1910).

An exhibition of traditional weapons and armor from dozens of nations will also be on display. This will be a sample of the world martial arts museum, which will be established at the festival venue next year.

For foreign participants and visitors, Chungju city is offering home-stays, allowing participants to experience Korean culture at ordinary Korean homes. The city government is also operating free shuttles to nearby tourist attractions.

    By Yonhap
    Published : Aug 30, 2019 - 19:59 Updated : Aug 30, 2019 - 19:59

About 3,200 martial arts masters and officials from 106 countries gathered in Chungju, a city in the central South Korean province of North Chungcheong, on Friday to kick off the 2019 Chungju World Martial Arts Masterships.

The competition, dubbed the Martial Arts Olympics, will continue through Sept. 6 at Chungju Gymnasium and seven other venues in Chungju, about 150 kilometers southeast of Seoul, under the slogan “Beyond the Times, Bridge the World.”

A total of 2,414 athletes, accompanied by 705 officials, will compete for 271 gold medals in 20 martial arts categories -- belt wrestling, judo, taekwondo, aikido, ju-jitsu, muay thai, sambo, savate, wushu, kabaddi, kurash, pencak silat, Korean hapkido, horseback archery, taekkyeon, martial arts record contest, martial arts show, ssireum, tong-il moo-do and yongmudo. The horseback archery competition will be held at Sokcho Hwarang Horseback-riding Center in Sokcho, Gangwon Province.

Notably, the participating athletes include 369 top-notch martial artists, or 15.2 percent of the total, who are ranked higher than eighth in the world or have won medals in world and continental competitions in the last three years.

The opening ceremony took place at Chungju Stadium beginning at 7 p.m. amid an attendance of about 10,000 citizens, dignitaries, athletes and officials.

Dignitaries in attendance included Prime Minister Lee Nak-yon; Lee Kee-heung, head of the Korean Sports & Olympic Committee and a member of the International Olympic Committee; North Chungcheong Gov. Lee Si-jong who doubles as chairperson of the 2019 Chungju World Martial Arts Masterships Organizing Committee; Choue Chung-won, president of the World Taekwondo Federation, who serves as president of the 2019 Chungju World Martial Arts Masterships; former U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon serving as an honorary president of the 2019 Chungju World Martial Arts Masterships; and Rafael Chiulli, president of the Global Association of International Sports Federation.

The opening ceremony began with a choir performance by the Little Angels of Korea and a taekwondo demonstration, and was divided into four parts -- Birth of Martial Arts, New rendezvous, Flare of peace and Eternal promise. Then, a number of K-pop singers, including Apink, N.Flying and Davichi, performed.

The Chungju masterships is the second competition to be held in North Chungcheong Province, after the first competition was hosted by Cheongju, the capital of the province, about 140 km south of Seoul, in August 2016. Sponsors of this year’s Chungju masterships include the GAISF, the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Korean Sport & Olympic Committee.

The World Martial Arts Masterships Committee, headquartered in Cheongju, aims to develop the martial arts competition into a global festival on par with the Olympics and solidify North Chungcheong Province’s brand as a mecca of martial arts. (Yonhap)
I'm guessing this is the same event but I don't really know anything beyond these two news stories. Anyone?

North Chungcheong Province growing into int'l mecca for martial arts
    All Headlines 11:42 August 28, 2019

CHEONGJU, South Korea, Aug. 28 (Yonhap) -- Ahead of Friday's opening of the 2019 Chungju World Martial Arts Masterships in Chungju, a city in the central South Korean province of North Chungcheong, the provincial government aims to foster the competition into a martial arts Olympics featuring a mix of martial arts and cultures from countries around the world.

The 2019 Chungju World Martial Arts Masterships, the world's only international martial arts championships, is the second competition to be held in North Chungcheong Province, after the first event was hosted by Cheongju, the capital of the province, about 140 kilometers south of Seoul, in August 2016. This year's competition in Chungju, about 150 km southeast of Seoul, will continue through Sept. 6 under the slogan "Beyond the Times, Bridge the World."

This file photo shows a martial arts demonstration. (Yonhap)

North Chungcheong is said to be a natural birthplace of the world martial arts competition, as the region is associated with various Korean traditional martial arts and has vast relevant resources.

Chungju is a mecca of "taekkyeon," which is one of Korea's representative traditional martial arts, along with taekwondo. The Korea Taekkyeon Association is located in Chungju.

The World Martial Arts Masterships also originated from Chungju.

International attention began to escalate for martial arts of various countries in 1997, when the UNESCO designated traditional martial arts as an intangible cultural heritage of humanity. Responding to the global attention, the municipality launched the Chungju Martial Arts Festival in 1998. This year, the 19th martial arts festival will take place alongside the Chungju World Martial Arts Masterships.

The first Chungju Martial Arts Festival was centered on demonstrations. After 2000, competitive events were added, resulting in a spike in participation numbers. Previously unfamiliar martial arts, such as India's Kalari, Mongolia's Bokh and the Philippines' Arnis, were also introduced to South Koreans through the festival.

In October 2002, about 40 countries established the World Martial Arts Union, or WoMAU, in a bid to promote human and material exchanges among international martial arts groups. The WoMAU, headquartered in Chungju, is a formal non-governmental organization authorized by the UNESCO.

In 2008, the South Korean government enacted the Promotion of Traditional Martial Arts Act. In November 2011, taekkyeon was placed on the list of UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, becoming the world's first martial arts to be recognized by the United Nations body. The UNESCO designation also set the stage for North Chungcheong's renaissance as a mecca of martial arts.

Then the 2016 Cheongju World Martial Arts Masterships again brought North Chungcheong to the attention of the world's martial artists. In the midst of the 2016 competition, the International Centre of Martial Arts for Youth Development and Engagement (ICM), an international organization under UNESCO, was established in Chungju. The ICM plays a role in promoting the global spread of traditional martial arts and supporting academic approaches to martial arts.

The World Martial Arts Masterships Committee (WMC), headquartered in Cheongju, has also been strengthening its status as an international organization. Just as the International Olympic Committee organizes the Olympic Games, the WMC is the governing body of the World Martial Arts Masterships and selects its host city every four years after receiving bids from countries. It also supports the organization, development and coordination of various martial arts competitions. Late last year, the first overseas National Martial Arts Committee (NMC) was launched in Indonesia. The WMC plans to set up other NMCs in Southeast Asia, including India, Nepal and Malaysia, Europe and the United States in the future.

"We'll make all possible efforts to turn North Chungcheong into an international mecca of martial arts by successfully hosting the 2019 Chungju World Martial Arts Masterships," an official at the provincial government said.

World's largest martial arts competition kicks off in Chungju
    Updated: 2019-08-31 13:14:27 KST

"I announce the start of the 2019 Chungju World Martial Arts Masterships"

Martial arts masters from around the world are here in the city of Chungju,.. where the World Martial Arts Masterships has begun with a massive opening ceremony.
The first Masterships was held three years ago in Cheongju,… just 50-kilometers away.
This is the second edition, and though it's similar in many ways, this time it's much bigger
There are some 4-thousand martial arts masters and officials here from more than 100 countries,… which is 20 more countries than last time.
There are also three more disciplines,… for a total of 20 martial arts, including Taekwondo, Wushu, Judo and Muay Thai.
One of the heads of the Masterships says he was skeptical at first because he thought it was just another event,… but today, he was surprised to see how meaningful it is.

"They are giving opportunities for the athletes over 100 countries to come here just to engage in sports,… but also to go back with a message that Korea, Chungju stands for peace, hope and future for the youth of the world. And I think this is very honorable project."

Ban Ki-moon, the event's honorary chairman,… also said he is very happy to see such development in his hometown… through the power of martial arts.

"Martial arts are found in many countries, and they are the history of that country. But many martial arts are overshadowed by popular commercial sports. So that is why events like these are important for the development of martial arts,… in which the spirit and soul are deeply rooted."

Besides the competition itself, there will also be a martial arts exhibition, an academic meeting and a world martial arts leaders' forum.

"It might get short shrift compared to other sporting events,… but the organizers are determined that such a massive gathering of masters will provide a chance for visitors to get closer to the art of fighting."

    The competitor numbers...

2,400 martial arts masters head to Chungju
    Aug 28,2019

More than 2,400 martial arts athletes from 107 countries worldwide have registered to participate in the 2019 Chungju World Martial Arts Masterships set to kick off in Chungju, North Chungcheong, this week, organizers said Tuesday.

The 2019 Chungju World Martial Arts Masterships Organizing Committee said it has received registration from a total of 3,143 participants from 107 countries - 2,428 athletes in 20 martial arts and 715 officials - as of Monday ahead of the opening of the event in Chungju of North Chungcheong Province, about 150 kilometers (93 miles) southeast of Seoul, on Friday.

Dubbed the Martial Arts Olympics, the Korean government-approved championships will continue through Sept. 6 at nine venues in Chungju, including Chungju Gymnasium, under the slogan “Beyond the Times, Bridge the World.”

Competitions will take place in a total of 20 martial arts categories - belt wrestling, judo, taekwondo, aikido, jujitsu, muay thai, sambo, savate, wushu, kabaddi, kurash, pencak silat, Korean hapkido, horseback archery, taekkyeon, martial art record contest, martial arts show, ssireum, tong-il moo-do and yongmudo.

Notably, the participating athletes include 369 top-notch martial artists, or 15.2 percent of the total, who are ranked higher than eighth in the world or have won medals in world and continental competitions in the last three years.

Judo has the largest number of top-notch participating athletes with 100, followed by 36 in jujitsu, 32 in taekwondo, 30 in wushu, 27 in kurash, 26 in muay thai, 15 in taekkyeon, 13 each in savate, kabaddi and ssireum, 12 each in belt wrestling and pencak silat, 10 in aikido, nine in tong-il moo-do, eight in sambo, seven in Korean hapkido and six in yongmudo.

As athlete registration is still under way in taekwondo and other martial arts, the final number of outstanding athletes to show up in Chungju is expected to grow further.

“Previously, the number of top-notch competitors was expected to reach around 100, but the size has more than tripled,” an official at the organizing committee said.

The Chungju masterships is the second competition to be held in the central Korean province, after the first competition was hosted by Cheongju, the capital of the province, about 140 kilometers south of Seoul, in August 2016. The World Martial Arts Masterships Committee aims to develop the martial arts competition into a global festival on par with the Olympics and solidify North Chungcheong Province’s brand as a mecca of martial arts.

In kurash, a traditional wrestling form that originated in Uzbekistan, 12 world-renowned athletes will compete, including Mirmanis Iliadis of Greece who won the European championships from 2017 to 2019, Kanazar Nazarov of Tajikistan and Iranian Ali Akbari, who won the 2018 Asian Games gold medal in Indonesia.

In the category of savate, a French combat sport that uses the hands and feet as weapons, combining elements of English boxing with graceful kicking techniques, top-class practitioners Mohamed Diaby of Mali and Maria Musa of Algeria will be competing.

In kata judo, the duo of Kenji Takeish and Koji Uematsu, the world champions in 2010-2011, 2014-2015 and 2018, will compete, along with the duo of Nakayama Satoshi and Hayashi Seiji, the world champions in 2012-2013 and 2016-2017.

In sambo, a Russian combat sport, the top-ranked Laure Fournier of France will compete, while Amal Amjahid of Belgium, ranked No. 1 in the world for jujitsu, is expected to compete. Sung Ki-ra, a Korea jujitsu athlete, who won the gold medal in the Jakarta-Palembang 2018 Asian Games, will again compete for a medal in Chungju.

A ranking point system, which has been applied to the Olympics, the world championships and the Asian Games, will be used for the martial arts event’s nine categories, including taekwondo, jujitsu, muay thai, savate and pencak silat. The system will be applied to the taekwondo poomsae event for the first time, and the team winners of taekwondo kyorugi, a type of full-contact sparring, will earn an automatic berth in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

The organizing committee has adopted the system of a video review for the competition, or video assistant referee, hoping instant replay of all programs will elevate the level of fairness.

The Korea Anti-Doping Agency will conduct doping tests for medalists of different weight classes in eight categories affiliated with the World Anti-Doping Agency, including taekwondo, muay thai, savate, wushu and belt wrestling. Random doping tests on all of the players will be implemented during the event.

Interesting how they broke down the 'top notch' competitors. I would've liked to have seen the overall number of competitors per sport.
