    Super OT

I'm not going to speak to French or European laws or customs on this.

But, that does give instructors of all programs something to consider; namely, how to we engender 'good' behavior in students? Not metaphorically, but the mechanics of instruction.

Do we preach, show through our behavior, etc?

EDINBURG, Texas — A federal agent, various police officers and a mixed martial arts promoter have all been charged in connection a complex scheme to steal drugs from smugglers. The conspiracy involved officers from the Rio Grande Valley to Houston.
On Friday afternoon, the U.S. Border Patrol Rio Grande Valley (RGV) Sector and Edinburg Police separately confirmed to Breitbart Texas that officer Border Patrol Agent Daniel Polanco and Edinburg PD Officer Hector Beltran were the individuals named in a multi-count federal indictment accusing them on drug charges.

According to information provided to Breitbart Texas by the U.S Attorney’s Office, both Polanco and Beltran turned themselves in to authorities on Friday.

Former Houston Police Officer Esteban Carrion was in custody on separate charges and will go before a federal judge in Houston in the near future. Authorities have also issued a summons for Precinct 7 Deputy Constable Juan Ignacio Leal from Houston who is expected to go before a judge on May 31.

The charges come from a superseding indictment filed in court this week that accused 15 defendants of which at least three are law enforcement officials on 11 counts of drug possession and conspiracy charges.

Since 2013, agents with Homeland Security Investigations began looking into drug trafficking organization that would use law enforcement officials to carry out the seizures of drug in order to steal from other drug traffickers, court records obtained by Breitbart Texas revealed.

The group was contacted by drug traffickers looking to get loads of cocaine and methamphetamine into northern cities. According to authorities, the group would then dilute the drugs to a minimum in order to have law enforcement seize the diluted load while the group kept the actual drugs. The group would then tell the drug traffickers that their loads had been seized by law enforcement.

The case first came to light in March when federal authorities arrested Dimas De Leon, a local mixed martial arts promoter in connection with his criminal organization. Dimas De Leon, a Mexican national living legally in Edinburg, is one of the owners and promoters of South Texas Fighting Championships (STFC) a mixed martial arts league that regularly holds professional bouts.

The indictment of law enforcement officials in connection to drug trafficking comes after a long line of public corruption cases. One of the most notable cases dealt with the Panama Unit, a drug unit made up of deputies with the Hidalgo County Sheriff’’s Office and Mission Police. The members of the unit earned time in federal prison for stealing drugs from drug traffickers and then selling them on the side.

The Panama Unit scandal spread to other law enforcement officials including former Sheriff Guadalupe “Lupe” Trevino and his right hand man Commander Joe Padilla who are both serving a federal prison sentence for taking money from a Mexican drug cartel boss who was living in Texas.

In April 2015, federal authorities arrested Rio Grande City Detective Noel Pena for his role in the theft of drugs during narcotics seizures.

In July 2015, federal authorities arrested Hector “Jo Jo” Mendez, a Mission Police officer for his alleged role in the theft of narcotics. In that conspiracy, the drugs were also diluted in order to be seized by authorities.

    Jason "Mayhem" Miller

Great head shot. Not so great for a mug shot tho...

MMA fighter 'Mayhem' Miller arrested in altercation at Costa Mesa restaurant

Jason "Mayhem" Miller, a mixed martial arts fighter with a history of clashing with police, was arrested again over the weekend, this time on suspicion of attacking a woman, injuring a security guard and spitting on a police officer at a Costa Mesa restaurant.

Costa Mesa police said they responded around 2 a.m. Sunday to the Saddle Ranch Chop House at the Triangle shopping center, where security guards had tackled Miller.

"He'd apparently gotten into some kind of argument with a couple of women and was in the process of assaulting them when security took him to the ground," police Sgt. Matt Selinske said.

Security staff handcuffed Miller, but he kept struggling and was trying to stand up when police arrived, Selinske said.

As police were taking Miller into custody, he spit on one of the officers, according to Selinske.

Miller's face was bleeding, apparently from being tackled, so officers took him to a hospital before he was booked into Orange County Jail on suspicion of assault and battery, assault on a police officer and public intoxication, Selinske said.

He was cited and released Sunday night, according to jail records.

One of the security guards suffered a sprained wrist during the struggle with Miller, according to police.

Miller, a 35-year-old Mission Viejo resident, is familiar to police in Orange County, who have arrested him about a half-dozen times in the past few years.

In March, he was arrested on a warrant in connection with vandalizing a now-closed tattoo shop in Lake Forest in January.

In February, Irvine police arrested Miller on suspicion of driving under the influence.

In October, Miller was accused of throwing a tile at Orange County sheriff's deputies and menacing them with a fire extinguisher and metal pole after they responded to a call about a disturbance at his home.

In March 2015, authorities alleged that Miller fought with police after reportedly breaking a glass and causing a disturbance at a Laguna Beach restaurant. After being arrested, police alleged, Miller kicked out a police cruiser's window on the way to jail.

In October 2014, Miller live-tweeted an hours-long standoff with police after officers arrived at his home to arrest him in connection with a domestic violence warrant.

And in 2012, Miller was charged with vandalism on allegations that he broke into an Orange County church and was sleeping naked on a couch. The case was later dropped.

Miller is known for fighting in several mixed martial arts organizations, including the Ultimate Fighting Championship.

He also hosted the MTV reality show "Bully Beatdown" and had a part in the 2012 movie "Here Comes the Boom."

    Lionel Young

A two-fer. What a way to start this week.

Police: Brockton MMA fighter kidnapped, strangled, assaulted girlfriend
Lionel Young, 32, is charged with kidnapping and assaulting a 20-year-old woman.

The Enterprise Posted Jul. 11, 2016 at 1:39 pmUpdated at 1:49 PM

BROCKTON – A 32-year-old Brockton man was arrested last week and charged with kidnapping, strangling and assaulting his 20-year-old girlfriend, police said.
Lionel Raheme Young, 32, of 32 Bunker Ave., Apt. 3, Brockton, was charged on July 6 with assault and battery on a household member, kidnapping, strangulation or suffocation and threat to commit a crime.
The arrest was not made public by police, who are prohibited by a 2014 bill from releasing information about domestic violence incidents. The incident was detailed in court documents obtained by The Enterprise on Monday.
Last Wednesday, police received a call from a third party indicating a man had kidnapped his girlfriend and was assaulting her inside a Bunker Avenue apartment.
Patrolman Richard Gaucher knocked on the door, which was answered by the 20-year-old victim and Young, he wrote in a police report filed in court.
Young is a mixed martial arts fighter, who recently competed in Blockbuster MMA, an event held at Campanelli Stadium in Brockton in late June. Young defeated a Philadelphia man with a first-round knockout in a 17-second fight.
The victim told police she started dating Young four weeks prior, but that they broke up after two weeks. He kept texting her and asking her to come back, so she decided to meet him that day, Gaucher wrote.
A verbal argument ensued inside the home and the victim grabbed pills Young had and refused to give them back, Gaucher wrote. The victim told police Young grabbed her hair and put her head against the television. She then smacked and broke it, which prompted Young to tell the victim he would prostitute her to repay him, Gaucher wrote.
“He started hitting her and held her down as he laid on top of her, putting his legs over her and around her,” Gaucher wrote. “He then stated, ‘I want to kill you!’ He then began to choke her with his hands around her neck.”
The victim started biting Young’s arm, but the police report states “the harder she bit him, the harder he choked her.” The woman said she couldn’t breathe when Young was choking her, Gaucher wrote.
After Young let go of the victim, he called friends over to his apartment to try to prove he wasn’t assaulting her, Gaucher wrote. The victim began texting people for help and called her mother, fearing he wouldn’t let her leave the apartment, the report said.
A third party contacted police, who responded to the home after learning a woman was possibly being held against her will.
Young told police he did not hit the victim and had friends come over to prove he wasn’t being assaultive, Gaucher wrote. Young showed police a bite mark on his left forearm and a small bump over his left eye, and stated the victim had no visible injuries, the report said.
Young pleaded not guilty during his arraignment last Wednesday in Brockton District Court. He was held without bail on a separate open case and is due back in court July 22 for a pre-trial hearing.
Young has a lengthy criminal history in Brockton District Court, dating back to 2001 for multiple arrests on charges of carrying a firearm without a license, possessing a firearm without a firearms identification card, assault and battery, improper use of a credit card over $250, uttering a counterfeit note.
The MMA fighter told police he had another fight scheduled for August.

    Monte A. Cox

At least false tax returns aren't as bad as beating his girlfriend or child molestation.

Bettendorf Mixed Martial Arts business owner sentenced for filing false tax return
    By Marcia Lense
    Published: July 14, 2016, 4:32 pm

DAVENPORT, Iowa (KWQC) – A Bettendorf man has been sentenced to spend three months in federal prison for filing a false tax return. On July 13, 2016, 56-year-old Monte A. Cox was also ordered to serve one year of supervised release following his prison term and to cooperate with the Internal Revenue Service in the determination of any taxes Cox may still owe for calendar years 2007 through 2010.

Cox pleaded guilty in Oct. 2015, to the charge in a plea agreement. Cox was accused of knowingly under reporting income on his personal tax returns for the years 2007, 2008, 2009, and 2010. The U.S. Attorney’s Office says Cox earned income as a Mixed Martial Arts fight promoter and fighter manager under the name Ultimate Productions, Inc. during that period.

Officials say Cox owed the government an additional $370,478 in taxes beyond what he claimed in his tax returns.
The matter was investigated by the Internal Revenue Service – Criminal Investigation, and prosecuted by the United States Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Iowa.

Not a pro fighter but a fan.

    Not busted but wanted.

Acton martial arts fan wanted over £1.2 million cocaine smuggling plot
    JUSTIN DAVENPORT 6 hours ago

Jason Waterman: National Crime Agency investigators are appealing for information National Crime Agency

This is the face of a martial arts fan from west London who is wanted in connection with a plot to smuggle £1.2 million worth of cocaine into a remote airfield in Yorkshire.

The National Crime Agency is seeking Jason Waterman, 31, nicknamed Jugs, after officials seized seven kilograms of the drug at the airstrip near Thirsk.

Officers witnessed a man running from the scene as they swooped on the delivery at Bagby airfield on October 18 last year. The drugs were found in a briefcase after the light aircraft touched down following a flight from Holland.

The pilot, from Acton, is due to stand trial charged with drugs importation offences next year. Agency investigators suspect Waterman, who has links to north and west London and Watford, was also at Bagby airfield at the time.

Seized: Police found around seven kilos of cocaine (National Crime Agency)

Waterman — also known as Jumbo — is said to be a fan of boxing and mixed martial arts and was a member of the London Shootfighters MMA club in Acton. He is known to have also visited gyms in west London including Gymbox Westfield in Shepherd’s Bush.

Mick Maloney, from the NCA’s border policing command, said: “This was a substantial quantity of cocaine with a street value of more than £1.2 million and it is important that we speak to Jason Waterman as part of our investigation.

"We know he has links to north and west London and has previously visited gyms in those areas.

“His appearance is quite distinctive and I would ask anyone who may have seen him or knows anything about his whereabouts to come forward. They can either contact us directly using the details on our website or via Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.”

In February, Andrew Wright, a pilot known as Biggles who smuggled almost £34 million worth of cocaine into Britain using a remote airstrip in north Yorkshire, was jailed at the Old Bailey for 19 years.

The NCA has warned there are almost 3,000 sites in the UK where small aircraft can land.

Kiwi sportsman Jason Lee: 'I got kidnapped in Brazil'

A Kiwi sportsman in Brazil says he was kidnapped by men in police uniform and forced to withdraw money from ATMs.

Jason Lee, Jiu-Jitsu athlete and boyfriend of New Zealand journalist Laura McQuillian, tweeted "What did you guys get up to yesterday? I got kidnapped. Go Olympics! #Rio2016."

On Facebook, Lee wrote "yesterday I got kidnapped in Brazil."

Lee said he was kidnapped by people in police uniforms, "not by some random people with guns."

He added "I was threatened with arrest if I did not get in their private car and accompany them to two ATMs to withdraw a large sum of money for a bribe.

"I'm not sure what's more depressing, the fact this stuff is happening to foreigners so close to the Olympic Games or the fact that Brazilians have to live in a society that enables this absolute bull**** on a daily basis. This place is well and truly f***ked in every sense of the word imaginable."

In February Lee spoke about his life in Rio - where he had been living for 10 months.

"I decided to pack up my life and move here to pursue my dream of being a professional athlete and training in Brazilian jiu-jitsu full time at one of the best gyms in the world," he said in a Fairfax column about Kiwis living overseas.

"I would have to say the greatest advantage (of living in Rio) would be the weather, which is amazing almost all of the time - even during the winter it's hot enough to go swimming at the beach. Also the cost of living is much lower than New Zealand," he said.

"There are obvious disadvantages, such as crime and personal safety but I would urge this isn't a big enough problem to discourage people from visiting. The language barrier can be tough at times as very few people speak English, so learning Portuguese is a must for day-to-day life."

This came after two members of the Australian Paralympic sailing squad were robbed at gunpoint last month.

Paralympic sailor Liesl Tesch and team official Sarah Ross were confronted by two men while riding their bicycles in at Rio park, Dailymail reported

One of the men was carrying a pistol and the women were robbed of their bicycles.

A spokesman from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade said it did not have information on the incident but pointed to its advice section.

"Reports of express kidnappings in Brazil are common in major cities. This is when criminals abduct a victim for a short amount of time and force them to withdraw funds from their bank account. To reduce the risk of this occurring we recommend you use ATMs that are located in public places during daylight hours or ATMs located within bank branches."

Security issues ahead of Rio Olympics

Security of fans and athletes has became a major concern on the eve of next month's Olympics.

Murders rose sharply in the first half of 2016, just as officials wanted to use the Aug. 5-21 Olympic Games to showcase the city as a tourist destination. Shootouts erupt daily, even in Rio slums where community policing programs created to pacify them had successfully rewritten the narrative in recent years, AP reports.

The number of people killed by police, who many residents accuse of shooting first and asking questions later, has spiked in the past two years after dropping significantly the previous six. Police, in turn, are increasingly under attack: 61 have been killed in Rio since January, the majority while off duty.

"2016 has been a very bad year. We have seen a dramatic increase in homicides, robberies and other crimes," said Ignacio Cano, a sociologist at the Violence Studies Lab of Rio de Janeiro State University. "We lost a big opportunity to transform police and develop a new public safety model."

Law enforcement experts say Brazil's worst recession since the 1930s is at the heart of the surge in violence in Rio. A financial crunch in the oil-producing state has put thousands of government workers' salaries and pensions on hold, police budgets have been slashed and daily announcements of layoffs have added to the angst.

Rights groups additionally blame a culture of combat still at the core of much of Rio's law enforcement, instincts more likely to emerge when officers feel under attack.

Cano says tourists coming for the Olympics will likely be spared the violence lived daily in the slums, though it periodically does spill into the city's tourist-friendly and affluent south. The 85,000 soldiers and police assigned to patrol the streets is a force double that of the 2012 Games in London.

On a recent afternoon, two Associated Press journalists watched as half a dozen officers sheltered behind a cable car station shot it out with suspected drug traffickers in Complexo do Alemao, a sprawling cluster of slums in north Rio. Minutes after the gunfire stopped, several schoolchildren walked by the building as gun-toting police stopped and frisked drivers and bikers.

Amnesty International counted 265 such shootings last week, the first since launching a crowdsourced app to help alert people living in violence-plagued areas.

    Manuel Torres

Mixed Martial Arts Fighter Sent To Prison For Sex Assaults
    September 26, 2016 11:39 AM

    (Getty Images)

HARTFORD, Conn. (CBS Connecticut and AP) – A professional mixed martial arts fighter from Connecticut convicted of molesting a girl over several years has been sentenced to 30 years in prison.

The Journal Inquirer reports that Manuel Torres, of Manchester, was sentenced last week by a judge who called him a sexual predator.

Prosecutors say the 38-year-old Torres sexually assaulted the girl from the time she was 8 or 9 until she was 15. He had a relationship with the victim’s mother.

Torres was convicted in June of multiple counts of sexual assault and risk of injury to a child.

The victim said in an impact statement that Torres “stole my innocence by using me as a tool for his personal gratification” and she suffers from post-traumatic stress disorder.
Not to make light of these hideous crimes, but this sounds like something we'd more commonly see on our Busted Martial Artists thread.

    Another domestic abuser

Mother, 21, who was beaten so badly by her martial arts ex that she didn't recognise herself in the mirror slams his 'joke' 13-month jail sentence

Miss Sloan said: 'He should have been given a lot longer than 13 months'

A young mother who was beaten so badly by her martial arts ex-boyfriend she thought she was going to die has called his 13-month jail sentence 'a bit of a joke'.
Former doorman Dominic McCluskey, 21, was imprisoned today after repeatedly kicking and punching his girlfriend Brogan Sloan, 21, in a savage attack lasting an hour in February.
Miss Sloan, a mother-of-one, was left with broken ribs, a missing front tooth, a fractured nose, swollen face and two black eyes.
Newcastle Crown Court heard how McCluskey launched the assault after scrolling through her phone and reading old messages.

Marital arts fighter Dominic McCluskey, 21, (left) was imprisoned after repeatedly kicking and punching his girlfriend Brogan Sloan, 21, (right) in a savage attack lasting an hour

Miss Sloan, mother to Jackson, two, said: 'I thought I was going to die. I didn't think I was going to get out of there alive.
'All I could see and taste was blood. I had a missing tooth and I could hardly breathe.
'Dominic knew exactly what he was doing as he was a K1 fighter.
'I am happy he has been given a prison sentence but it is not justice served.
'I could have died, it could have been a lot worse than it was.
'He should have been given a lot longer than 13 months. It's a bit of a joke really.
'He deserves to be punished and locked up for a long time for what he did to me.'
She added: 'I don't think he will learn his lesson. He will just come back out and go back to his old ways.
'My ribs still hurt now and he attacked me in February. But I am a much stronger person now after what I have been through.'

McCluskey launched the assault after scrolling through her phone and reading old messages

Miss Sloan had been in a relationship with McCluskey for almost two years before the attack.
They had met through mutual friends and grew close enough that Miss Sloan introduced the martial arts fighter to her then six-month-old son.
The court heard how the couple had been on a night out before the attack on February 21.
Prosecutor Neil Jones told the court: 'She put her phone under the pillow before she went to sleep and she woke up to find she was being attacked in a sustained manner - he was punching her and kicking her as well.
'It was a sustained assault lasting around one hour. He threw her to the bed, breaking her pyjamas.
'She felt her tooth was missing and there was blood all over her face.'
He added: 'She has suffered from insomnia since the attack and she was nervous that her son would be scared of her because she looked completely different due to the swelling on her face.
'She could not care for her son until seven days after the attack.
'He also damaged Miss Sloan's property while she was unconscious and also damaged a tablet at the police station while he was resisting arrest.'

Miss Sloan had been in a relationship with McCluskey for almost two years before the attack

McCluskey, from Gateshead, pleaded guilty at an earlier hearing to assault occasioning actual bodily harm.
He also admitted assaulting a police officer and two charges of criminal damage.
Stephen Duffy, defending, said: 'I accept that it was a sustained attack - I simply do have to accept that.
'This is a man who is capable of hard work, he earns £300-£400 a week as a ground worker.
'He will have no problem in returning to work when he is free to do so.
'None of his previous convictions are to do with domestic abuse. This was a sudden loss of temper on his part. It was out of character.'
Appearing via video link from Durham Prison, McCluskey buried his head in his hands as Recorder Darren Preston today sentenced him to 13 months in prison.
The judge said: 'This was a prolonged, vicious and sustained attack.
'You and your partner had been out drinking - you both went to bed and she woke up to find you attacking her.
'There was a sustained and repetitive nature to this.
'She had many injuries, serious injuries and she lost a tooth. Domestic abuse is a very serious offence.'

    Kirk Figueroa

Not a 'fighter' but had training. I imagine any paramilitary type like this person seems to be will have had some MMA training nowadays.

Boston gunman who critically wounded two police officers was self-described bounty hunter, touted mixed martial arts training

A Boston gunman who critically wounded two police officers before he was shot dead on Wednesday night was a self-described bounty hunter.

Kirk Figueroa, 33, fired at officers shortly after they arrived at a home after responding to a fight between roommates. He was armed with an assault rifle and a protective vest.

The wounded officers were in "extremely critical condition" early Thursday but are out of surgery and with their families, according to Police Commissioner William Evans.

A car with the name of a website was towed from the scene in East Boston on Thursday. On the website, elitepolicing.org, a man who identifies himself as Kirk Figueroa says his company provides police support, fugitive apprehension and extradition services.

Figueroa described himself as a constable, a former member of a Army Reserve military police unit, a bounty hunter and a former corrections officer. He also said he was trained in mixed martial arts.

"His interpersonal and communication skills have enabled him the fluent collaboration with other private in-house protection teams," Figueroa's bio reads.

After Figueroa shot the two officers, other cops who were stationed outside ran inside and exchanged gunfire with the gunman. Both officers were taken to Massachusetts General Hospital, and nine other officers were being treated at Tufts Medical Center for trauma, stress and minor injuries.

"One officer had his hand in one of the wounds and I think that was instrumental in getting the officer down to Mass General quickly," Evans said.

Police, initially concerned there might be another suspect, ordered local residents to temporarily stay put.

The names of the wounded officers have not been released.

"They ran into a firefight here, able to pull two of their officers out safely, and again unfortunately, we had to take a life in doing it," Evans said.

Hoaxes are dumb to begin with, but a clown hoax? Super dumb.

LaPorte police: Self-described martial arts fighter's clown encounter was a hoax
    Lauren Cross lauren.cross@nwi.com, 219-933-3206 Updated Oct 15, 2016

LAPORTE — A mixed martial arts fighter’s claim he fought off two people dressed as clowns this week turned out to be a false report, LaPorte City police confirmed.

The police department sent out a post on Facebook declaring the story a hoax Friday. The Times confirmed the post came from the department.

“Just to put all minds to ease, the media story of a clown incident on Andrew Ave. was investigated, by our detective bureau, and discovered to have been [a] false report. Appropriate action will be taken by our detectives,” the post read.

It’s unclear how police uncovered that Matthew Cox concocted his story and LaPorte Police Chief Adam Klimczak was unavailable for comment Friday.

Cox said earlier this week he was walking about 11 p.m. Tuesday in the 1200 block of Andrew Avenue on the city’s west side when two people wearing masks and checkered clown outfits approached him.

He had claimed two clowns yelled profanities at him, leading Cox, a self-described experienced cage fighter trained in martial arts, to crouch into a fighting stance.

He said one had a sledge hammer and another pulled a knife on him.

Cox said one of the clowns was running "like a freight train" straight toward him when he knocked the subject to the ground with a punch.

The fallen clown pulled a knife, according to Cox's story, but he grabbed the clown by the wrist and knocked the blade out of his hand while continuing the pummeling.

Cox claimed the other clown took off running and the one he had beaten up was on the ground moaning when he left and called 911 while running home.

Officers quickly showed up to find Cox breathing heavily and talking fast while describing what had just taken place, police said.

"If he's not in the hospital right now from everything that I've done to him, then he's hurting really bad," Cox said Thursday during an interview about the alleged encounter.

Police said officers went to LaPorte Hospital to try and locate the suspects, but nobody matching the description had checked in.

LaPorte police Chief of Detectives Tom Thate said earlier this week that investigators were treating the report seriously unless information developed that would dispute the victim's claims.

Louf guilty of 11 counts of abuse

More on Louf here and here.

Jury finds MMA trainer guilty on 11 counts in abuse case
Sentencing hearing slated for next week
BY JULIE MANGANIS STAFF WRITER 15 hrs ago

    Joseph Louf

SALEM — A former mixed martial arts instructor from Salem was found guilty Monday of repeatedly abusing his girlfriend, leaving her so disfigured she was unrecognizable to her own family, and nearly blind from two detached retinas.

Joseph Louf, 40, who owned the American Total Defense gym in Beverly until his 2014 arrest, will be sentenced next Tuesday in Salem Superior Court for mayhem, maiming and nine counts of assault and battery.

His victim was a now-31-year-old Gloucester woman who'd met Louf on the dating website Match.com and later joined his gym in 2012. The two began dating that year and eventually lived together in his Salem apartment, where, she told jurors, his abuse escalated to near-daily beatings before she fled.

For months during the relationship, Louf and the woman blamed her injuries and her dramatic weight loss (she was a skeletal 104 pounds when she left) on her participation in MMA fighting.

But after she left, and underwent emergency surgery to save her eyesight, she told family members and then police that she'd been beaten repeatedly by Louf. He'd broken her nose more times than she could count, police said at the time.

A Salem Superior Court jury deliberated for about eight hours over two days before reaching a verdict Monday afternoon.

Louf was found guilty of one count of mayhem, for the repeated, disfiguring breaking of her nose; a charge of maiming, for punching out the stitches on her cheek; assault and battery causing serious bodily injury, for kneeling on her eyes until she suffered detached retinas; assault and battery on a pregnant person, and multiple counts of assault and battery with various weapons including a belt buckle, bottle opener, rubbing alcohol poured on her face, and for dragging her around by her hair.

He was found not guilty of one count of mayhem, a charge that he'd disfigured her lip, and the jury found that while he was guilty of stabbing the victim in the ear with a pair of scissors, she did not suffer serious bodily injury. A judge last week had also reduced a charge of attempted murder — for strangling the woman — to assault and battery, for which he was found guilty.

The jury of six men and six women read the one verdict of "not guilty" first, and for a moment, Louf looked up.

Then, for the next 11 counts, the jury forewoman repeatedly stated: "guilty."

Louf bowed his head and appeared to be crying.

    Defense: 'Sports injuries'

Louf did not testify, but his defense attorney argued to jurors that the woman's injuries were the result of MMA "sparring" and fights, and claimed she had lied in order to qualify for insurance coverage for her eye surgery and plastic surgery to repair her nose and lip.

But prosecutor Kate MacDougall argued there was no evidence the woman ever took part in the extreme sport, only in karate and jujitsu classes and one karate tournament — video from which showed a helmeted and padded woman, the victim, making only minimal contact with another karate student.

And in a major blow to the defense, a witness they called told jurors the woman already had insurance coverage at the time she underwent surgery on her eyes.

During her closing argument last week, Louf's attorney, Michelle Brennan, tried to suggest a new motive: jealousy, citing testimony from two women who were with Louf at the gym when, they contend, they saw the victim driving around in the parking lot.

Both of those witnesses, called by the defense, then sat with Louf's family during closing arguments and as the jury was assembled in the courtroom on Monday morning.

“With this verdict, the jury has assured the victim that she is not at fault nor did she deserve what happened to her,” District Attorney Jonathan Blodgett said in a statement after the verdict.

Brennan, meanwhile, said outside court, "I think the jury made a mistake. I don't think my client was guilty."

Asked if that meant there will be an appeal, she said, "Definitely."

Jurors leaving the courthouse Monday afternoon after the two-week trial declined to comment.

    Justin Nanaquawetung

A tragic story on many levels.

MMA fighter accused of one-punch killing tearfully testifies it was actually a head-butt

Justin Nanaquawetung, 28, is charged with manslaughter

An Edmonton MMA fighter accused of killing a man with one punch tearfully took the witness stand in his own defence Tuesday and told a jury he actually head-butted the victim.

Justin Nanaquawetung, 28, is charged with manslaughter for allegedly killing Mike Laronde, 33, outside a Whyte Avenue pub at about 1:30 a.m. on June 22, 2014.

Eyewitness Sariah Reid earlier testified she had been smoking outside the pub with Laronde and saw Nanaquawetung punch Laronde once in the jaw and the victim immediately fall to the pavement. She also said Laronde was unconscious for a few minutes and had a gash on the back of his head.

Nanaquawetung testified he had gone to Gallagher’s with his friend, Adam Mueller, and they were told by Reid they had missed last call. Then, after Mueller tapped on a window of the pub to get the attention of a friend inside, he said Laronde got “right in Adam’s face” and was being “intimidating.”

Nanaquawetung told jurors he believed that Laronde, based on the man’s stance, was going to “strike” Mueller and said he flashed back to a 2011 incident where he was attacked by a man armed with two knives who sliced him across the face and he nearly lost an eye.

The MMA fighter testified his “heart started racing” and he got a “buzzing in his ears” and he just reacted.

“I panicked, I approached Mr. Laronde, grabbed his shirt and head-butted him once,” said Nanaquawetung, calling the minute-long incident a “tragedy” for everyone involved.

He told jurors he and Mueller quickly left, because he was worried they could be in danger from friends of Laronde’s in the pub.

Nanaquawetung testified he went to speak to his father after learning a day later at work that Laronde had died.

At that point, the featherweight fighter began crying and put his head down on the witness box and the judge called for a break.

Later, Nanaquawetung told jurors he recalls Laronde falling, but did not see or hear him hit the pavement.

When asked why he head-butted the victim, instead of doing something else like pulling Mueller away, he testified he believed his friend was “seconds away from an imminent attack” and said “there wasn’t a decision-making process. It all happened so fast.”

When questioned further about the 2011 knife attack, Nanaquawetung said he head-butted the man after the latter had cut him, bit off part of his eyebrow and then choked him. He added police came, but he was never charged.

Mueller testified earlier that Laronde was aggressive and had threatened them by stating: “I will f–king kill you guys.”

The jury was told earlier that Laronde was dropped off at a nearby home after the incident and fell asleep between 4 a.m. and 5 a.m. At 10 a.m., he was found stiff and not breathing.

An ambulance arrived a short time later and he was declared dead.

An autopsy determined he died as a result of a fractured skull caused by blunt cranial trauma.

    Cody East

Combat sports: MMA’s Cody East arrested
By Rick Wright / Journal Staff Writer
    Monday, December 19th, 2016 at 8:08pm

Los Lunas MMA fighter Cody East was arrested early Sunday morning on felony charges of battery and false imprisonment.

East, 28, is being held on $30,000 bond at the Metropolitan Detention Center.

According to a criminal complaint, a Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Deputy responded to a call made from a home in southwest Albuquerque at approximately 2 a.m. Sunday. East allegedly had kicked, kneed and slapped his girlfriend, threatened to kill her son and dragged her by her hair from the house into his pickup truck.

East was backing out of the driveway when the deputy arrived, according to the complaint. The woman was crying and was not wearing pants, socks or shoes.

She told the deputy that she and East had been arguing and that East became progressively more angry. East left the house at one point, the complaint states, and the woman locked the door. But East returned, forced his way through a living-room window and re-entered the residence.

The woman attempted to lock herself in a bathroom but was unsuccessful, the deputy said. East took away her cell phone and refused to return it, accusing her of attempting to call the police.

East then kicked her multiple times in the legs, kneed her in the head and slapped her face before dragging her out of the house to his pickup, according to the complaint. East, whose fighting nickname is “Freight Train,” is listed on MMA websites as standing 6-foot-3 and weighing 261 pounds.

The woman said East had threatened to kill her son. The son told the deputy he had heard the threat and hidden in a closet.

It is not clear from the complaint whether the call to the Sheriff’s Department was made by East’s girlfriend or by a third party.

East is no stranger to the legal system.

In 2008, the former state wrestling champion was convicted of battery and two counts of child abuse stemming from a brawl during a party at his family’s home. He spent two years in prison and was on probation until January 2010.

His arrest on Sunday was first reported by KRQE.

East has a 12-3 record as an MMA fighter and is a former King of the Cage heavyweight champion. He signed with the UFC in February but was released after two consecutive losses by TKO.
Nothing gets attention like a pantsless crying woman.
