    The Nibelungs

I love Wagner, but like the swastika, Nibelung is another cultural appropriation that I cannot stand.

Germany: Police raid far-right martial arts tournament
Around 90 participants attended the mixed martial arts (MMA) event, which was banned last year for having far-right ties. The fights were set to be held at a motorcycle club in Saxony-Anhalt.

DW Wörter der Woche | Symbolbild Schwitzkasten (Colourbox)
Police raided a right-wing extremist Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) tournament on Saturday in the German state Saxony-Anhalt.

The event, in Magdeburg, about 160 kilometers (100 miles) southwest of Berlin, was set to take place on the grounds of a motorcycle club.

Advertised as the "Battle of the Nibelungs," the competition was banned due to reasonable suspicion that many of the participants had ties to far-right extremism.

Around 140 police officers took part in the raid or were placed on standby nearby.

When they arrived, a boxing ring and other equipment had already been set up for the event, which was set to include a variety of combat sports.

The officers later confiscated the ring and ordered all attendees to leave the premises. The participants included 90 people from 10 different states.

Germany's intelligence services have described the event as "the largest and most renowned European martial arts event for the right-wing extremist scene."

    Participants defy ban
The tournament had taken place several times in the eastern city of Saxony and was officially banned last year, after a leading neo-Nazi from the city of Dortmund registered the event in his name.

Police sent around 300 officers to enforce the ban on last year's event, which was set to be held in Ostritz, a small city on the border with the Czech Republic.

The fight has been held every year since 2013, and has seen hundreds of right-wing extremists from across Germany, Europe and even the United States take part, according to the office.

The event is organized "by young Germans who are united by the dedication and enthusiasm for 'their' sport and who do not want to be subject to the yoke of the prevailing mainstream," the event's website said.

"The Battle of the Nibelungs does not want to understand sport as part of a rotting political system, but as a fundamental one to an establish an alternative."

    Israel Adesanya

Mixed Martial Arts: UFC middleweight champ Adesanya apologises for 'rape' remark

    Thu, March 25, 2021, 11:47 PM·1 min read

    MMA: UFC 248-Adesanya vs Romero

(Reuters) - UFC middleweight champion Israel Adesanya has apologised after he said on social media he would "rape" fellow fighter Kevin Holland.

Nigerian-born Adesanya posted an expletive-laden video on Instagram earlier this week directed at Holland, who had targeted him in a series of remarks.

The 31-year-old, who currently resides in New Zealand, later deleted the video and said he had "crossed the line".

"I understand the gravity of this word and how it can affect and hurt other people apart from my opponent, although that was never my intention," Adesanya tweeted https://twitter.com/stylebender/stat...63658053902339.

"I am still growing under the spotlight, and I take this as a lesson to be more selective with words under pressure."

Adesanya's apology came after Grant Robertson, New Zealand's deputy prime minister and minister of sport and recreation, condemned his comment.

"We have to take rape seriously. It's not an issue that anyone should be making jokes or flippant comments about at all," Robertson said.

Adesanya was undefeated in MMA with a 20-0 record until he was beaten by Jan Blachowicz in a light heavyweight title match at UFC 259 on March 6.

    PALM BEACH COUNTY, Fla. —
A 56-year-old man was arrested for his involvement in the shooting at the Bamboo Room in Lake Worth Beach on March 20.

Antonio Montes De Oca Hernandez discharged a weapon inside and outside the venue following an in-person mixed martial arts event, where a fight broke out that ended with a shot being fired, the Palm Beach Sheriff's Office said.

Investigators said Hernandez hit someone with a folding chair, grabbed a gun from his wife's purse and shot the gun into the air.

No one was hit with a bullet, but several people had minor injuries from the panic caused by the shot being fired.

Three days after the shooting, authorities shared pictures of the suspect.

On Saturday, PBSO requested the assistance of the Hialeah Police Department to arrest Hernandez. He was arrested without incident

Hernandez is currently at the Dade County Jail in Palm Beach County facing charges of shooting into a building and affray.

Authorities said there will be more arrests as a result of this case.
    I miss in-person fights.

    Joshua J. Duggins

Records say suspect in attack on Fredericksburg police officer had martial arts training
    Keith Epps Jul 28, 2021 1

    Duggins

The man accused of pummeling a Fredericksburg police officer last week in Central Park had training as a mixed martial arts fighter, court records state.

Joshua J. Duggins, 31, is charged with malicious wounding and assault on a law-enforcement officer. He is being held in the Rappahannock Regional Jail.

According to affidavits for search warrants filed in Fredericksburg Circuit Court, Officer F.P. Murphy was in the Walmart parking lot shortly after 6:30 a.m. July 21 when he noticed a man breaking into a white Chevrolet pickup in the area of Sky Zone.

When Murphy approached what an affidavit described as being a man “of very large stature,” the man attacked the officer, pinned him on the ground and struck him repeatedly, the affidavits state.

Two bystanders, including a woman who pounded the suspect with a baseball bat in an effort to get the man off Murphy, helped rescue the officer. Murphy was treated at Mary Washington Hospital for head injuries.

The search warrants gave police the authority to search the vehicle for fingerprints and other evidence of an attempted larceny. Police also received permission to search Duggins’ hands and knuckles for DNA related to the assault on Murphy.

Duggins has a preliminary hearing scheduled for Aug. 17.

Cain Velasquez, the former UFC heavyweight champion, was arrested Monday on suspicion of attempted murder and booked into Santa Clara (California) County jail, the San Jose Police Department announced Tuesday morning.

Velasquez is being held without bail, per online records. He has a court date set for Wednesday.

The San Jose Police Department announced Monday evening that there was a shooting in the city near the intersection of Monterey Highway and Bailey Avenue. Police said one adult male was shot at least once and transported to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. On Tuesday, police identified Velasquez as the shooter.

"The motives and circumstances surrounding this incident are still under investigation at this time," per the San Jose Police public information Twitter account.

Velasquez, 39, is a two-time former UFC heavyweight champion, holding the title in 2010 and 2011 and then again from 2012 to 2015. The California native is considered one of the top heavyweight fighters of all time. Velasquez retired from MMA in 2019 and has been coaching at his longtime gym, American Kickboxing Academy in San Jose.

Velasquez's team has not responded to a call for comment as of Tuesday morning.

After his run in the UFC, Velasquez took up professional wrestling, first in Mexico, where his parents were born, and then in WWE. He was released by WWE at the outset of the pandemic in 2020, but resurfaced for Mexican promotion AAA in December. The plan, sources said, was for him to wrestle more this year.

SAN JOSE, Calif. — A judge in California denied bail Monday to former two-time UFC heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez, who faces attempted murder and multiple gun assault charges after authorities said he fired at a pickup truck carrying a man accused of sexually abusing a 4-year-old family member.

Velasquez was arrested in San Jose last week after he chased a pickup carrying the man through busy streets in three Silicon Valley cities, ramming the vehicle with his own pickup truck during an 11-mile (18-kilometer) high-speed chase, prosecutors said.

Velasquez, 39, fired a .40-caliber pistol at the vehicle several times, wounding the man’s stepfather, who was driving, in his arm and torso, prosecutors said.

Celebrity attorney Mark Geragos, who is representing Velasquez, told reporters outside the court that he plans on vindicating his client and getting him back with his family, the Mercury News reported.

Velasquez transitioned to pro-wrestling after retiring from his MMA career in 2019. A former two-time UFC heavyweight champion, he earned title belts in 2010 and 2012.

A student rapist was released by police only to rape one undergraduate in his halls and sexually assault another less than a year later.

Charles Goodwin, 21, a mixed martial arts fighter and business management student at Liverpool University was convicted in January of raping two women and sexually assaulting another.

The rapist, who described himself as a 'sex god', told Liverpool Crown Court he was 'a hopeless romantic'.

The judge told him to expect 'a lengthy period of imprisonment'.

Goodwin had been released under investigation but without charge by police after he aggressively raped and throttled a student in Manchester.

Eight months he got another student drunk at their halls in Liverpool and raped her.

Three days after that he sexually assaulted another woman in the same halls, prompting both women to go to the police.

Within days Goodwin was arrested again.

He was found guilty of three charges of rape and one charge of assault by penetration against one student in Manchester and one charge of raping a student in Liverpool.

The jury also convicted him of two offences of sexually assaulting a third student in Liverpool but cleared him of a sexual assault on a fourth student, also in Liverpool.

The attack on the first victim involved him holding her down by the throat and he was found guilty of attempting to choke her and assaulting her.

Charles Goodwin (pictured), a mixed martial arts fighter, who described himself in the trial as 'a hopeless romantic' was told by a judge to expect 'a lengthy period of imprisonment'

The 21-year-old business management student was found guilty of seven different charges in total, including rape, assault by penetration and sexually assault

The court heard that he had told her she deserved to be 'treated like a princess' and picked her and carried her - before going on to violently attack her in her own home.

He had faced three charges of rape against the second victim - to whom he had said he was 'a sex god' when she complained he had hurt her - but was cleared of two of those charges.

In September 2020 he had slept with her consensually but a few nights later he got her drunk at a flat party, so much so that she was unable to stand.

Although a friend put her to bed, Goodwin later sent a photo of the girl in his bed.

When she woke up the next morning Goodwin was having sex with her and she became confused, before remembering screaming the night before as the MMA fighter had anally raped her.

She had pushed him off and later saw her own blood on tissue paper in the toilet.

Her stomach had multiple scratches and hand-shaped marks remained on her body for two days.

When she later learned of his prior arrest and release, she said: 'Why did it take three victims for him to be remanded?'

'Why wasn't he remanded immediately? I think there are definitely failings in the handling of the Manchester case,' she told The Times.

Although Goodwin convinced her it was just a drunken mistake, she was compelled to report the rape to the police when she heard he had sexually assaulted another student in the same halls just days later.

This time, he was comforting his next victim, who was sad because another boy didn't want to be in a relationship with her.

Goodwin put his coat around her and plied her with alcohol. He gave her peach schnapps and lemonade and made her drink coffee liqueur from the bottle.

She became so drunk she couldn't stand up without support and threw up.

Goodwin managed to corner her when they were alone and repeatedly put his hands down her trousers, touching her genitals. She told him not to and removed his hands but he carried on, before taking out his ***** and forcing her to touch it.

When she was able to walk away, he pulled down her trousers and smacked her bottom.

Goodwin, of Hilbre Street, Liverpool city centre but formerly of Salford, showed no reaction when the jury returned their unanimous verdicts after just over six hours deliberations.

Goodwin was previously arrested and released without charge after aggressively raping and throttling a student in Manchester. Just eight months later he raped a student in Liverpool and sexually assaulted another days later

But his father and grandfather, who stood in the public gallery as the verdicts were returned, afterwards shouted out at the seven men and five women jurors.

'Shame on this court, disgusting,' said his dad.

Goodwin's granddad shouted, 'A young man's life has been totally scotched and ruined.

'How can you believe someone's lies to the court? It is really no way to deal with these offences.'

During his 13-day trial Liverpool Crown Court heard how he had been on police bail after the first attack but went on to commit the other attacks.

Judge David Swinnerton told Goodwin, 'I am going to order a pre-sentence report to be prepared by probation to include the extent to which you present a danger to women and the outcome of that may affect sentence.

'Please prepare yourself for a lengthy period of imprisonment,' he added.

During his 13-day trial Liverpool Crown Court (pictured) heard how he had been on police bail after the first attack but went on to commit the other attacks

The offences of which he was convicted took place between January 15 and September 30, 2020.

Matthew Curtis, prosecuting, had told the jury, 'The prosecution say the defendant did not care whether the complainants consented or not. In short, he got what he wanted with no care for them or the immediate consequences of his actions.'

Goodwin, who had a girlfriend at the time, admitted having sexual activity with all four women but maintained they had all consented and denied all 12 charges.

He said the choking of the first victim, aged 19, had also been consensual and admitted calling her offensive misogynistic names as it 'turned him on.'

During his evidence he described himself as a combination of 'a hopeless romantic and Charlie big bollocks. It is the way my personality worked.'

Goodwin will be sentenced on Thursday.
We'll see how that sentencing goes, won't we?

An 'unempathetic and manipulative' rapist who was found guilty of raping two female students and sexually assaulting a third while under investigation has been jailed for 17 years.

Charles Goodwin, 21, a mixed martial arts fighter and business management student at Liverpool University, was convicted in January of raping two women and sexually assaulting another.

Goodwin, who told Liverpool Crown Court he was 'a hopeless romantic', was ruled to be dangerous and the judge imposed a three year extended licence.

The court was told Goodwin had forced himself on his first victim in a taxi, before raping her three times in a 'sustained attack' in which he slapped her and grabbed her throat in student accommodation in Manchester.

He was arrested but released on bail and then under police investigation, the court heard.

Goodwin's second and third victims were attacked in student accommodation in Liverpool, the court heard.

Judge Garrett Byrne said part of Goodwin's 'modus operandi' was to get his victims drunk to take advantage of their vulnerability.

He said: 'What was clear from all the evidence given by victims is that you had no care whatsoever as to whether or not they were consenting, their consent was a matter of complete indifference to you.

'You treated each of them not as a human being, deserving respect, but as a plaything or toy.

'You took the view once they were within your control you could do to them as you pleased.'

Goodwin, of Hilbre Street, Liverpool, was found guilty following a trial of four counts of rape, one count of assault by penetration, one count of attempting to choke, assault occasioning actual bodily harm and two counts of sexual assault.

The judge said he was satisfied Goodwin was dangerous and ordered an extended licence period of three years on top of his sentence.

Charles Goodwin (pictured), a mixed martial arts fighter, who described himself in the trial as 'a hopeless romantic' has been jailed for 17 years

Goodwin's lawyer told Liverpool Crown Court that his difficult relationship with his mother in childhood had shaped some of his negative attitudes.

But Judge Bryne told Goodwin, who showed no emotion at all throughout the hearing, that while his complicated early life might go someway to explain it but there was no compelling mitigation and he had shown no remorse and still denies the offences.

Goodwin, of Hilbre Street, Liverpool city centre but formerly of Salford, had been found guilty of three charges of raping one student in Manchester, attempting to choke her, assault by penetration and assaulting her.

A jury heard how he began indecently touching her in a taxi on the way to her student accommodation.

During the 13 day trial they heard that he had told her that she deserved to be 'treated like a princess' and picked her and carried her in but once inside he stripped them both and they had consensual sex.

Terrifyingly he then began choking her, repeatedly slapped her across the face and despite her repeated requests to stop he raped her three times and used degrading language.

After that attack in January 2020 he next struck the following September after starting studying at University of Liverpool.

He was convicted of raping a second student at her accommodation in the city, though cleared of two other rapes of her, and two offences of sexually assaulting a third student just three days later. He had been cleared of assaulting a fourth student by penetration.

The court heard that after the first attack in Manchester he was initially released on bail but after time limits expired he was then released under investigation.

Judge Byrne told the defendant that a shocking aspect of the case is that after he was arrested for those matters, he was released and went on to rape the second student and sexually assault the third student twice.

'The fact that you were under investigation for the first set of offences did nothing to inhibit you or cause you to stop. The reverse is true - you deliberately put yourself into social situations where you could predate on young women to sexually abuse and to satisfy your carnal desires.

'Part of your modus operandi was to encourage the victims to drink as much alcohol as possible so that they would lower their defences and in one case, to ply her with so much alcohol that she did not know what she doing, so that you could take advantage of their vulnerability.'

He said he was satisfied he had plied the second victim with alcohol to facilitate the rape at student accommodation in Liverpool. And while she lay unconscious in bed, mostly covered by a sheet, he photographed her and sent it to her friend with a disgusting comment.

'You did this - not with the innocent motivation which you tried to persuade the jury of - but with a more sinister intent. It was designed to prolong her humiliation and to display your power over her to her friend.'

Judge Byrne said that he had taken advantage of the vulnerability of his third victim due to the amount she had drunk which had been clear to see.

The court had been told that he was immature but the judge told him that did not operate to any significant degree. 'I saw you give evidence. You struck me as a highly intelligent, cold, unempathetic, and manipulative person who know perfectly well that what you were doing was wrong. '

Katy Appleton, defending, said today, 'He acknowledges some flaws in his behaviour namely his arrogance and his attitude towards women.'

She said his relationship with his mother had shaped some of his negative attitudes towards woman and he accepted he disrespected women,

She said that there had been elements of 'abandonment and harm' which may have affected his ability to empathise with his victims and creating a power struggle.

'His emotional intelligence is not developed,' she added.

In impact statements the first victim told how she was left suffering from post traumatic stress disorder and had felt suicidal and self harmed. She was unable to continue her studies and had to move back home.

She was physically as well as psychologically harmed and the offences, which she described as 'the worst experience of her life' have affected her ability for form intimate relationships and does not feel safe or in control.

The other rape victim told how she felt unable to stay in her student accommodation and was left feeling 'sad, lost and anxious'. She now has difficulty socialising and feels her formerly bubbly personality has changed.

The third student told how she had to take time off from her studies, became anxious and suffered from panic attacks.

Goodwin, who had a girlfriend at the time, admitted having sexual activity with all four women but maintained they had all consented and denied all 12 charges.

The offences of which he was convicted took place between January 15 and September 30, 2020.

Goodwin previously showed no reaction when the jury returned their unanimous verdicts after just over six hours deliberations.

During his evidence he described himself as a combination of 'a hopeless romantic and Charlie big bollocks. It is the way my personality worked.'
I'm sure his 'sex god' title will be appreciated in prison.

OK, so, according to Shields, the “National institute of health” (apparently just one of the institutes and not all of them) added the anti-parasitic medication ivermectin to the “list of covid treatment.” Not the list of treatments, plural, but the list of just one treatment, singular. And, based on what Shields said, “the conspiracy theorist,” apparently the one big one, “were right,” sort like saying how a gigantic doughnut were in your fridge. That tweet got re-tweeted over 15.5 thousand times as you can see here:

    From TwitterFROM TWITTER

Besides an interesting mismatch of plural and singular nouns and verbs, there was one itty bitty problem with what Shields had tweeted: he didn’t provide any evidence supporting his statement. And his statement went against what’s actually listed in the National Institutes of Health (NIH) Covid-19 Treatment Guidelines. OK, two things were wrong with his tweet, along with the plural, singular stuff. All right, three things were wrong.

Before believing what Shield, or rather Shields, says about the NIH, you may want to look up the NIH Covid-19 Treatment Guidelines yourself. The ivermectin page specifically says the following: “The Panel recommends against the use of ivermectin for the treatment of COVID-19, except in clinical trials.” That doesn’t sound like adding ivermectin to the list of Covid treatment. Or rather list of Covid treatments, since list typically implies more than one item. For example, you usually don’t make a list of things to shop for and just have the word “meatball” on it.

Why did Shields make it seem like the NIH recently changed their stance? After all, the NIH Covid-19 treatment guidelines have long recommended against the use of ivermectin for the treatment of Covid-19 ever since random politicians, personalities, and social media accounts started telling people to use the medication without offering that little thing called real, legitimate scientific evidence. All of that began way prior to August 31. So nothing really special happened on August 31, except for perhaps National Eat Outside Day.

Did Shields provide any evidence that ivermectin actually works against Covid-19. Well, Shields’ tweet thread went on to mention “the study” that supposedly showed “95% decrees In mortality” without specifically indicating what study he was referring to or providing a source:

    From TwitterFROM TWITTER
I don’t know if you’ve ever faced a “decree in mortality” but that sounds pretty scary. If someone were to walk up to you in a bar, look straight at you in your eyes, and issue such a decree, you’d probably want to leave the bar as soon as possible. In the tweet, Shields also added, “These people would rather you die than admit they were wrong and lose money.” Yeah, you always want to look out for “these people,” no matter who “these people” happen to be. That’s the case, for example, when you are on a Tinder date at a restaurant or back at your place and have to ask your date, “why did you bring along ‘these people’?”

On the next tweet in his thread, Shields asserted that “The study used 88,012 people with 92% reduction in death,” providing a screenshot of something that had no label or link:

    From TwitterFROM TWITTER
Umm, without a source or a link, this screenshot for all you know could have come from a toilet tissue paper package insert or a transcript of what was written on a bathroom stall. You can’t really assess a “new study” when you can’t even tell how legitimate the study may be. You can’t just post a screenshot of a paragraph with the words “new study” in it with no clear source and expect people to believe what’s being said. That would be like posting a screenshot of the words “Detroit Lions win Super Bowl” or “wind turbines cause cancer” and expecting everyone to believe it. OK maybe the second example wasn’t the best example.

Nonetheless, if the NIH had added ivermectin to the list of Covid treatment or treatments, don’t you think the NIH would have announced such a change? If there were indeed a legitimate ground-breaking scientific study on ivermectin, surely you would be able to find it on PubMed and a major press release. After all, it’s not as if medical researchers say, “I really hope a MMA fighter finds our study and tweets about it.”

    Roberson Douge

Florida pastor, who’s also a mixed martial arts master, arrested for alleged sex abuse of teens

    September 22, 2022 7:48pm Updated

A Florida pastor was arrested this week for allegedly having sex with two teen girls he met through his church and kung fu dojo, according to a police report.

Roberson Douge, 42, was booked into Brevard County jail Thursday after the alleged victims contacted police this week and accused him of predatory sexual behavior.

Douge serves as a pastor at Apostolic Church of Christ, and also owns the Tiger Claw Kung Fu Academy in Palm Bay, according to police papers.

Cops said one of the girls told her friend she was troubled by her relations with Douge, prompting the other to recount a similar experience with him.

Neither victim has been named because they are both under 18, but one victim told investigators she first met Douge after her family moved to Palm Bay and joined his church in 2019.

The teen, whose age was not specified, told police she often spent time with Douge’s family and he would engage in sexual activity with her while driving her back to home.

The second victim said she volunteered at his martial arts studio and they had relations in various places inside the location.

One of the teens told police that she confided to her boyfriend about the relationship and that he urged her to contact police.

Both teens eventually called cops, who set up a controlled call with Douge between week with one of them.

The pastor begged the girl not to tell anyone about his misconduct and apologized repeatedly.

Douge now faces 10 counts each of sexual battery on a victim between the ages of 12 and 16 and sexual battery on a victim between the ages of 16 and 17 by an offender older than 24.

    Who was the ref?

Referee beats martial arts fighter during match
Call made for better regulation of future events

    Hubert Desmond Cole.

Local mixed martial arts (MMA) fighter Hubert Desmond Cole is considering legal action against a referee after the official unloaded punches and kicks on him in the ring during a recent match in St Andrew.

Patrons at the event, which was Rough Fight League's (RFL) seventh tournament in a series of competitions, were given a jaw-dropping experience as they watched the referee carry out the attack on Cole, who unsuccessfully tried to evade the blows.

According to Andrew Mullings, CEO of RFL, the referee appeared to have been struck by Cole as he attempted to separate the two clenched fighters.

Mullings was of the opinion that the referee initially seemed to be defending himself, but acknowledged that he went too far. The CEO said he is considering to suspend the referee and said that some action should be taken against Cole for allegedly continuing to violate the no-groin strike rule.

However, Cole was adamant that he punched his opponent and not the referee. He claimed that he was treated unfairly and that he has suffered undue injury as a result of the attack.

Cole said, "Right now, my nose is broken. The nurse said it can heal by itself but I will have to put a bandage over it. I have to take at least one month from the hard hitting of the punching bags and pads because the nose will break again. I want this to be publicised. What I did was punch down the Rasta in the ring. All of a sudden the referee turned down on me. I want someone to pay the price."

A patron who claimed to have been at the event said he was stunned by the referee's actions. The patron recommended better regulation of these events to prevent future occurrences.

An amateur mixed martial arts fighter is accused in the death of a U.S. airman who was fatally struck outside a Florida bar.

Ross Johnson, 23, of Carterville, Illinois, has been charged with manslaughter in the death of Air Force Airman 1st Class Dayvon Larry, 31, of Malone, Florida, authorities said Tuesday.

It was not immediately clear whether Johnson had legal representation, and the area public defender did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Fights broke out Sunday both outside and inside the Coyote Ugly Saloon. Larry did not participate but may have known someone involved in an argument that preceded the fights, according to an incident report from the Panama City Beach Police Department.

Larry was punched once in a parking lot near the bar, police said.

Security personnel broke up the fight outside, found Larry and called first responders, who administered CPR before they took him to a hospital, where he died, police said.

Johnson was identified as a suspect based on security video, police said. Investigators said he gave conflicting narratives about what led up to his altercation with Larry but ultimately confessed, police said in a statement.

Coyote Ugly did not respond to a request for comment.

Larry was from Malone, a small town 70 miles north of Panama City Beach, police said.

A spokesperson for Tyndall Air Force Base, Florida, confirmed an airman died Monday but did not identify the person.

Police identified Johnson as an MMA fighter.

Nate Diaz surrenders after brawl; lawyer says he acted in self-defense

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — Mixed martial arts fighter Nate Diaz turned himself in to police in New Orleans on Thursday to face a battery charge arising from a weekend street brawl.

Police said the fight happened early Saturday outside a pizza restaurant and left a man unconscious.

Diaz went to police with his attorney Thursday and turned himself in, a police news release said. His attorney has told New Orleans news outlets Diaz acted in self-defense.

Diaz posted bond and was cleared to return home to Stockton, California, Zach Rosenfield, Diaz’s public relations representative, said.

“We appreciate how we were treated by the New Orleans Police Department, the court and their staff,” Rosenfield said in an email.

Diaz, 38, has been one of the most popular fighters in MMA since 2016, when he split two entertaining bouts with Conor McGregor.

Diaz and his older brother, former Strikeforce champion Nick Diaz, are well-known for their brash fighting style, their strict training standards, their embrace of marijuana culture and an overall anti-authoritarian attitude that appeals greatly to MMA fans.

Nate Diaz has fought for the UFC since 2007, but he is a promotional free agent after completing his UFC contract last year with a submission of Tony Ferguson. Diaz has said he would be open to returning to the UFC in the future, but he also launched his own combat sports promotion, Real Fight Inc., last year.

Diaz is also following the path of many MMA stars by moving to the boxing ring, where paydays are often larger than in the UFC. He is scheduled to fight YouTube star Jake Paul in August in an eight-round boxing match in Dallas.

    First rule of fight club...

Police break up mixed martial arts event organized by backyard fight club in Berea
    Updated: Jun. 02, 2023, 10:42 a.m.|Published: Jun. 01, 2023, 7:53 p.m.
By Bob Sandrick, special to cleveland.com

BEREA, Ohio -- Three Berea men, one 22 and two 19, along with two men from Parma and Medina, both 20, face trespassing and obstructing official business charges in connection with a fight club that organized a martial arts match May 26.

At about 11 p.m., police were called to a FirstEnergy right-of-way near the intersection of Race Street and Beeler Drive. The caller heard young people yelling and possibly fighting, and saw them climbing power-line towers in the right-of-way.

When police arrived, about 15 people ran southbound.

Police found a homemade fighting ring made of driveway markers, milk crates, plastic wrap, lamps and extension cords. Also on the scene were beer cans, fighting gloves, a wallet, a yoga mat, a pair of shoes, clothes, a blanket and a Styrofoam box filled with nachos.

One man, a 26-year-old Cleveland resident, stayed behind. He said he had been invited to the fight and had just arrived. He had been told to park his car in the lot of Heritage Congregational Church, 485 West St.

Police drove the Cleveland man back to his car outside the church, where they saw one of the 19-year-old Berea men who was later charged. That man initially denied attending the fight, then admitted that he was lying. Police later learned he was one of the fight’s organizers.

Four vehicles were parked at the far end of the church lot near the FirstEnergy right-of-way. In that area, police found the Parma man and his girlfriend, a 20-year-old Brook Park resident.

The Parma man said he was trying to help organize “Street Beefs,” a backyard mixed martial arts fight club. He said he and his girlfriend had rented an Olmsted Township house overnight so that they could attend the fight.

Police also caught a Columbia Station woman, 19, and a North Ridgeville girl, 17, running from the scene. The girl said she was the girlfriend of a third 19-year-old Berea man who had attended the fight but wasn’t charged.

Police took the girl to the Berea home of her boyfriend’s mother, who had no idea where her son was and had no knowledge of the fight.

Police then spotted the girl’s boyfriend, along with the Medina man, one of the 19-year-old Berea men who was charged and the 22-year-old Berea man walking back toward the fighting ring. They denied knowledge of the fight.
