Florida man facing DUI arrest offers deputies free MMA classes if they let him go, report says
Published 20 hours ago Brevard CountyFOX 35 Orlando

BREVARD COUNTY, Fla. - A Florida man, who claims to be a professional mixed martial arts fighter, was arrested for DUI despite offering deputies free classes for a month if they him go.

The Brevard County Sheriff's Office said that deputies observed Calen Holcomb, 34, driving a white pick-up truck on North Atlantic Avenue on Monday. They said that he was attempting to back into a parking spot and almost backed into a building. Upon making contact with him, they observed him stumbling and he smelled of alcohol. He also had red, bloodshot, and glossy eyes, they said.

Holcomb reportedly refused to complete a field sobriety exercise and test of his breath. He was placed under arrest for driving under the influence.

However, during the encounter, deputies said that Holcomb made several statements that he is a trained professional mixed martial arts fighter. He said that if the deputies let him go, he would let them attend a month of his classes for free. He reportedly offered this multiple times while being arrested and transported to jail. They said he also made several offers to cause physical harm to other suspects of law enforcement cases for deputies as payment.

During his trip to jail, deputies said that Holcomb had mood swings and was combative.

According to the arrest report, he faces charges for Driving Under the Influence (DUI) and Bribery Of or By Public Servant.

Now this story has the making of a great movie...

...or at least the opening of a 'walks into a bar' joke.

PHOENIX JONES, SEATTLE 'SUPERHERO' VIGILANTE AND MMA FIGHTER, ARRESTED FOR SELLING MDMA AND COCAINE
BY AILA SLISCO ON 1/29/20 AT 12:25 AM EST

A Seattle man who patrolled the city's streets in a costume and described himself as a "superhero" has found himself on the wrong side of the law after police arrested and charged him for allegedly selling drugs.

Ben Fodor, 31, was the leader of a group of costumed characters known as "The Rain City Superheroes" under the pseudonym "Phoenix Jones" until the group was dissolved in 2014. He was charged Monday on two counts related to dealing narcotics, according to The Seattle Times.

Police said Fodor was caught selling MDMA, also known ecstasy, to an undercover officer in November. His girlfriend Andrea Berendsen, 26, is also alleged to have been involved in a scheme to sell cocaine to undercover agents in January.

Court documents reportedly indicate that a Seattle narcotics officer initiated a series of text messages with Fodor in November 2019 after having earlier been tipped off to Fodor's alleged drug dealings. The officer arranged to buy $500 worth of MDMA, which Fodor allegedly agreed to on the condition that $300 would be sent in advance to his Venmo payment account. He is said to have then met an agent at a Starbucks coffee shop, where he delivered a brown paper bag containing around seven grams of the drug in exchange for the $200 balance.

A second attempt at a meeting to purchase another $500 of MDMA was made nearly a week later, but Fodor did not show up. The agent created a new persona and arranged a different drug deal on January 6. Fodor was arrested three days later when the exchange was allegedly made, with police confiscating four grams of cocaine during that transaction.

As "Phoenix Jones," Fodor urged drug dealers to refrain from their activities in Seattle and instead "sell somewhere else," according to a November 2010 article in the magazine Seattle Met.

The former self-described superhero also competed in mixed martial arts and reportedly relied on some of those skills in his costumed persona. Public reactions to his supposed crime-fighting activities were mixed. In recent years, his activities as "Phoenix Jones" have trailed off.

Fodor announced that he was retiring as a self-proclaimed superhero in 2019, claiming to be tired of attempting to solve the problems of Seattle, although he said he might put on his armored costume again if there is "a riot in the city."

"I'm not saying I'm never going to fight another crime," said Fodor in a March 2019 interview with NW NERD Podcast. "I'm just saying I don't owe you anything anymore. I don't feel like I owe people anything anymore. I used to feel like because I have this power it was my duty to use it, but it's not."

"If you're not using your ability to help people, I'm not using my ability to help people unless I want to," he added. "If I see a crime in front of me, I'm going to take care of it. But I don't own anybody anything anymore. I have a very special skill set and you no longer get to use it if you're not gonna play your part."

Law enforcement have always been skeptical of Fodor's superhero status. He was arrested in 2011 after allegedly dousing a group of people with pepper spray in an attempt to "break up" a street brawl that police later said did not happen. While charges against Fodor were eventually dropped, Seattle City Attorney Pete Holmes described him as "no hero, just a deeply misguided individual" after the incident.

Newsweek reached out to the Seattle Police Department for comment but did not receive a response in time for publication.

Fodor and Berendsen are scheduled to make an appearance in court on February 3.

Correction 1/29, 10:31 p.m.: This article has been updated to correct the title of the referenced podcast from "NW Nerds Podcast" to "NW NERD Podcast."

The violence at an MMA event in Moscow spilled out of the octagon and into the crowd as a mass brawl broke out involving fighters and fans.
The incident took place at local event ‘Coliseum’ where the competition took an unexpected turn with one fighter being seriously injured, according to reports.

It remains unknown what caused the wild scenes at the Moscow shopping center which hosted the event, but according to Vityaz-Noginsk coach Pavel Murtazin it was a group of enraged spectators who ignited the brawl.

No reports have been given regarding the alleged injuries suffered by one of the coaches.

The shocking scenes were met with furious reactions from MMA fans who called on Kazakh officials to take legal action against the alleged stabber.

Lawsuit accuses Chicago police officer of using dangerous ‘mixed martial arts’ tactics on man who allegedly spit in cop’s face
    By ROSEMARY SOBOL
    CHICAGO TRIBUNE |

Bernard Kersh holds hands with his mother, Keshia Johnson, while walking with the Rev. Jesse Jackson after Kersh bonded out of Cook County Jail in Chicago on Dec. 6, 2019. Kersh was charged with aggravated battery to a peace officer after allegedly spitting at a police officer, apparently prompting the officer to body-slam Kersh to the ground. (Chris Sweda / Chicago Tribune)

A man who was body-slammed against a curb by a Chicago police officer after allegedly spitting in the cop's face is suing the officer and the city, contending he was the victim of a "mixed martial arts takedown" that has left him "in danger of going blind in his left eye."

Bernard Kersh, 29, claims the officer is a trained mixed martial arts fighter known as “Bacon and Eggs,” and argues that his actions were intended to inflict “punishment or retaliation” rather than de-escalate the situation.

The Chicago Police Department has removed the officer and his partner from active duty while it investigates the incident last Thanksgiving in Chatham on the South Side.

The officers, dressed in plainclothes and in an unmarked squad car, were on routine patrol about 4 p.m. Nov. 28 when they saw Kersh drinking vodka at a bus shelter at 79th Street and Cottage Grove Avenue, prosecutors have said.

Car experts reveal which cars teeter on the edge of glory, many just one change away from making the leap from good to great. Click to see which models made the list.

One of the officers had taken away the vodka and was preparing to write Kersh a ticket for drinking on the public way when Kersh spit in the officer’s face, according to police and prosecutors.

According to the suit, the officer “wrapped his arms around Mr. Kersh and body-slammed Mr. Kersh, smashing his head into a concrete curb and knocking him unconscious.’’ The officer then “utilized a second MMA maneuver on Mr. Kersh — a forearm strike to his head,’’ the lawsuit alleges.

The suit claims the officers then stood over Kersh without providing first aid before “dragging his limp body’’ to their car.

Kersh refused medical treatment from an ambulance that arrived at the scene. He was taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center, where he had to be sedated in order to be treated, prosecutors said.

Kersh was charged with aggravated battery to a police officer and spent five nights in Cook County Jail. “There was a substantial amount of spit, in liquid form, that landed in the eye of (the officer),” Assistant State’s Attorney James Murphy said during Kersh’s bond hearing.

A bystander took video of a Chicago police officer as he hurled a 29-year-old man to the ground for allegedly spitting on him during an arrest Nov. 28, 2019.

Murphy said surveillance video from a store on Cottage Grove shows Kersh licking the police officer’s face and spitting at him before the “emergency takedown.”

Kersh had been convicted in 2018 of spitting on a police officer and in 2011 of punching an officer.

Mayor Lori Lightfoot called video of the incident — widely circulated online — “very disturbing.” It renewed tensions over the department’s treatment of minorities.

The lawsuit cites a January 2017 finding by the U.S. Department of Justice, which found Chicago police had a pervasive “pattern and practice’’ of civil rights abuses. “This incident is yet another example of the continuing injustice and maltreatment of disenfranchised minority citizens by CPD officers,’’ the suit states.

The suit also refers to the city’s failure to comply with a federal consent decree aimed at reforming the department.

    Michael Nates

    What an *******.

Local MMA fighter assaults officers after arrest for allegedly attacking stranger
Miami police said it took 12 officers to subdue 31-year-old Michael Nates

MIAMI – A local Mixed Martial Arts fighter was involved in a violent arrest with officers in Miami-Dade County.

Police said Michael Nates, 31, was arrested on Sunday, Feb. 9, after getting into a fight with a man on the street.

The victim, Alex Torres, who was walking with his 3-year-old daughter on the 5400 block of Northwest 3rd Avenue in Miami, told police Nates approached him and asked if the girl was his daughter.

Authorities said Torres initially ignored Nates, who kept following Torres and his young daughter, asking the same question, and for the girl’s name.

Police said Nates asked Torres, "Are you willing to fight for your daughter."

While walking with his 3-year-old daughter, Alex Torres (pictured) was allegedly attacked by local MMA fighter Michael Nates. (WPLG)

According to police, Nates somehow caused the girl to fall down, so Torres grabbed her and started running away.

That’s when police said Nates punched Torres and grabbed the girl by the arm, but a witness grabbed the girl back from Nates while he fought with Torres.

"This man was trying to take away my daughter," Torres said. "I don't know what's wrong with the man. He tried to take my baby."

Torres and several witnesses ran after Nates after the incident.

"He ran inside the gym," Torres said.

Shortly after, police arrived and located Nates nearby, arresting him.

Police said Nates and Torres did not know each other.

Several hours later, Nates was being processed at a Miami police station.

Local MMA fighter Michael Nates was arrested near a Miami gym, then attacked an officer inside a Miami Police station. (WPLG)

According to police, his handcuffs were removed so officers could take a picture.

“That is when he tried to grab a hold of the officer’s handgun,” said Miami Police Officer Kenia Fallat. “He starts fighting the officer.”

Officers attempted to use a taser on Nates, but it didn’t stop him.

Instead, Nates grabbed the taser and hit the officer on his hand.

A second confrontation happened in another room, one that took the involvement of several officers in order to subdue Nates.

"He gave fight to not just one officer, but to about 12 officers, in order to restrain him," Fallat said.

Nates is facing multiple charges including kidnapping, aggravated battery on law enforcement and resisting arrest.

    Convictions upheld for Balassa

    Balassa's sentencing here.

Murder convictions upheld for Tehachapi former mixed martial arts fighter who beat two men to death
    CRIME WATCH
    by: Jason Kotowski
    Posted: Feb 26, 2020 / 03:40 PM PST / Updated: Feb 26, 2020 / 04:00 PM PST

FRESNO, Calif. (KGET) — An appellate court has upheld the murder convictions of a Tehachapi former mixed martial arts fighter who beat two men to death inside his apartment after a night of drinking.

Joaquin Balassa, 33, will continue to serve a sentence of life in prison without the possibility of parole after the Fifth District Court of Appeal rejected his argument that the prosecution violated his right to due process and that the trial court committed errors in its instructions to the jury.

The only changes that need to be made to Balassa’s sentence, the court ruled, are that one of the special circumstance findings against him must be reversed because it’s duplicative, and a parole revocation fine of $300 must be removed because his prison term does not include the possibility of parole.

In its ruling issued Tuesday, the appellate court noted Balassa told “two starkly contrasting versions of events that could not be reconciled” regarding what had happened.

At the time of his arrest, Balassa denied any involvement in the killings of Jose Antonio Fajardo, 54, and Guy Richard Koukal, 57. At trial, however, he testified he killed them in self-defense after they raped him.

Changing his story “significantly damaged his credibility and undermined his claim that he had been victimized…” the court said.

“The prosecutor was entitled to use and did use (Balassa’s) prior inconsistent statement, including his failure to mention any need for self-defense to detectives, to impeach his credibility as to his self-defense claim at trial,” the court said in its ruling.

Fajardo and Koukal, a gay couple, first met Balassa about six months before the killings while shopping at a home improvement store where Balassa worked. They later exchanged numbers with him.

On the night of Aug. 31, 2014, the three met at a restaurant for drinks and later returned to Balassa’s apartment where they continued drinking.

Early the next morning, Balassa beat both men to death.

Prosecutor David Wilson said at trial the motive was unclear, but it’s believed Fajardo may have made a pass at Balassa or tried to kiss him and Balassa became angry.

During his trial, Balassa testified he had gone to bed but woke up to Koukal raping him while Fajardo held him down. He said he freed himself then acted in self-defense as he beat both men to death.

Balassa’s testimony marked the first time he ever claimed he’d been raped. Wilson said Balassa concocted that story in a “Hail Mary” attempt to avoid being found guilty of murder.

The prosecutor said at trial there was no corroborating evidence Balassa had been raped, and Balassa’s description of what happened didn’t match with blood spatter and other physical evidence at the scene. Also, there were no significant injuries to him upon his arrest.

Balassa wrestled in high school and later trained in jiujitsu, taekwondo and kickboxing. He lost his sole professional fight in March 2010.

MMA fighter accused of trying to kidnap girl appears in court

The MMA fighter who was accused of trying to kidnap a 3-year-old girl during a recent disagreement with the girl’s father in Miami’s Little Haiti neighborhood appeared in court on Tuesday. He was smiling most of the time.

Michael Nates, 31, allegedly attempted to kidnap the girl near the KO ZONE gym at 301 NW 54th St. The former Bantamweight fighter was ordered to undergo a mental health evaluation about a week after he was arrested Feb. 9.

Alex Torres told police officers that he and his daughter were walking near the intersection of Northwest Third Avenue and Northwest 54th Street when he ran into Nates. Torres said Nates asked him if he was willing to fight for his daughter and there was a struggle.

A witness told police officers he decided to intervene when he saw Nates punched Torres and grabbed the girl by the arm. Officers arrested Nates and reported he tried to grab an officer’s gun at the police station and it took about a dozen officers to retrain him.

Miami-Dade corrections officers booked Nates Feb. 12 and he is being held without bond at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center.

Nates is facing charges in two cases.

In the case of the father and his daughter, he is facing charges of kidnapping and battery.

In the case of the police station, Nates is facing 13 counts of resisting arrest without violence, two counts of aggravated battery on a law enforcement officer, two counts of depriving an officer with means of protection, two counts of resisting an officer with violence, escape and criminal mischief.
Slightly curious about how the KO ZONE gym is reacting.

Wife admits to hiding MMA fighter accused of double murder
    Posted Mar 03, 3:38 PM

    By Lynn Moore | lmoore8@mlive.com

MUSKEGON COUNTY, MI – The wife of a former MMA fighter facing the death penalty in a double-homicide case in Texas has pleaded guilty to hiding him from authorities.

Ginell McDonough, 38, of Muskegon is married to Cedric Joseph Marks, who is s accused of killing a Texas couple in January 2019. She pleaded guilty Jan. 31 to harboring a fugitive whom she knew was wanted for a felony.

Following his arrest, Marks, a mixed martial arts fighter, escaped from a prisoner van and was missing for nine hours before his recapture.

McDonough admitted to allowing Marks to stay at her home in Muskegon even though she knew he was wanted in Texas. Prosecutors have also alleged that she lied to investigators about what she knew about Marks’ alleged involvement in the homicides.

McDonough, a staff sergeant with the U.S. Army, also was accused of hiding at her Army Reserves office a suitcase containing Marks’ identification as well as an assault rifle.

She is not expected to serve any jail time when she is sentenced Nov. 13. Muskegon County Circuit Judge Annette Smedley has agreed to a sentence of time served and probation, court records show.

The defense requested the late sentencing date. Defense Attorney Michael Oakes did not return a phone call seeking comment.

Marks and his girlfriend, Maya Maxwell of Muskegon, have been charged in the homicides of Jenna Scott, an ex-girlfriend of his, and her friend, Michael Swearingen. It’s believed the couple were killed in Killeen, Texas, and buried in Oklahoma.

Indictments against Maxwell and Marks say they caused Swearingen’s death by “strangulation” and “asphyxiation” and also killed Scott by “homicidal violence” at about the same time.

An affidavit for Marks’ arrest indicates that Maxwell told detectives that Scott and Swearingen were killed by Marks at a home in Killeen to which they had been taken, on Jan. 3, 2019. Maxwell told police she heard sounds of struggles after Marks entered separate rooms where Swearingen and Scott were “located,” the affidavit states. When he left each of the rooms, the victims were deceased, the affidavit states.

Maxwell told detectives that the bodies of Scott and Swearingen were buried in Oklahoma, and police later located them at the spot she had described, the affidavit says.

“Maxwell also admitted that she was present before and after the deaths of Jenna Scott and Michael Swearingen and was present at the transport and burial of the bodies,” the affidavit states.

In addition to two counts of capital murder, Maxwell is charged with tampering with evidence. It’s alleged she tried to hide Swearingen’s vehicle after the murders, according to her arrest affidavit

Matt Roberts, chief trial attorney for the Muskegon County Prosecutor’s Office, said Marks was at McDonough’s home before he left with Maxwell on Jan. 1 for Texas, and that they returned around Jan. 5. McDonough allegedly let Marks and Maxwell stay in her home from Jan. 5-8. They were arrested Jan. 8 in Grandville.

While incarcerated, Maxwell gave birth to a baby whose father is Marks, according to 105.1 FM “The Ranch" radio.

Marks escaped on Feb. 3 from a private prisoner transport van that was taking him from Kent County to face double-murder charges in Texas. He escaped when the van stopped at a McDonald’s restaurant in Conroe, Texas, and was found nine hours later hiding in a trash can.

A mixed martial arts fighter who used the nickname “Spiderman,” Marks reportedly trained at a Muskegon area gym and also taught self-defense classes to women.

VIDEO | Massive brawl erupts in cage at MMA event in Russia
By Tom Taylor -March 12, 2020

All hell broke loose at an MMA event in Russia last weekend.

The trouble occurred at the ACA Young Eagles 12 card in Cherkessk, shortly after a fight between Dzhaddal Alikbekov and Alim Gugov. The fight ended with Alikbekov winning via a controversial submission. Evidently, Gugov’s supporters didn’t agree with the verdict.

Moments after the referee raised Alikbekov’s hand to signify the victory, a swarm of fans stormed the cage, attacking the ref. Several others then joined the fracas attempting to defuse the situation.

This is far from the first brawl we’ve seen at an MMA event—who could forget the end of the infamous UFC 229 card? The frequency of these issues certainly didn’t deaden the disappointed of ACA Young Eagles President Ruslan Kahmzaev, however.

“I was welcoming guests and didn’t watch the fight,” Kahmzaev told RT Sport (via Bloody Elbow). “A refereeing error might have occurred, but it should have been challenged calmly. We have specially appointed people who can review the referee’s actions. We don’t need obnoxious behavior here.”

    Juan Ramirez

There's a huge difference between an 'MMA fighter' and some one who 'claims to be a trained mixed martial arts fighter'. The kid is just 19.

Video: MMA fighter rings doorbell, beats neighbor
    By Cassie Dickman
    Posted Aug 1, 2020 at 2:58 PM

Surveillance cameras captured a harrowing attack earlier this week on a 35-year-old Woodland man, whom authorities say was beaten and dragged by his neighbor.

On Monday, the San Joaquin County Sheriff’s Office says that 19-year-old Juan Ramirez rang the victim’s doorbell shortly after 7:30 p.m., according to a department Facebook post. The victim, seeing it was his neighbor, answered the door and immediately found himself in the middle of an unprovoked attack on his front porch.

Surveillance video allegedly shows Ramirez kicking and hitting the victim multiple times with his fists, Sheriff’s officials say. Ramirez also was seen picking up two baseball-sized rocks and using them to strike his neighbor across the face before eventually dragging the man across his own property.

The victim, who was transported to an area hospital, suffered multiple injuries, including abrasions to the top and back of his head, minor cuts and bruises throughout his body, broken ribs, a collapsed lung and ruptured eardrum, Sheriff’s officials said. At the time of the initial report, the victim also had been waiting on diagnosis of a possible broken jaw and left wrist.

Ramirez, whom authorities say claims to be a trained mixed martial arts fighter, is being held at the San Joaquin County Jail on $700,000 bail and is facing felony charges of mayhem and assault with a deadly weapon, as well as the enhancement of great bodily injury, online jail records show. He’s scheduled to appear in court at 8:30 a.m. Monday in Stockton.

“Imagine hearing your doorbell, looking out and seeing your neighbor,” Sheriff’s officials said. “You open the door and instead of friendly conversation, you find yourself in a fight for your life.”
