    Martial arts thug...

Six years for thug who left man with ‘catastrophic’ brain injuries
    By KARON KELLY
    Published on Saturday 21 April 2012 18:00

MARTIAL arts thug Rhys Iles is behind bars today after a sickening attack left his victim with “catastrophic” brain injuries.

Iles beat 49-year-old John Gibson so severely he can now only communicate using his thumb.

A court was told offshore worker Iles, 28, knocked Mr Gibson unconscious with a powerful blow before kneeling over him and raining a further four or five “sickening blows” on his defenceless victim.

It was initially feared Mr Gibson would not survive the brutal attack.

Iles, of George Scott Street, South Shields, had already pleaded guilty to causing grievous bodily harm and was back at Newcastle Crown Court yesterday where he was jailed for six years.

The court heard how Mr Gibson got involved in a row when a group of women jumped into a taxi booked by him and his partner to take them home from the Roker Hotel, in Sunderland, last July.

A scuffle broke out that ended up with Iles, who was best man at a wedding party being held at the venue, getting involved.

Iles and Mr Gibson, who had a history of ill-feeling between them, ended up fighting.

But when Mr Gibson went to walk away Iles launched a further attack where witnesses describe him hurling “sickening” blows to Mr Gibson’s head.

The court was told former fisherman Mr Gibson will never fully recover and his condition is not expected to greatly improve.

He is still in hospital where he is fed through a tube directly into his stomach and needs a hoist to move and cannot even swallow.

Prosecutor Julian Smith told the court: “He has limited movement on the left side of his body, that includes the use of his thumb, and some ability to move his limbs but very weak.

“There is no movement to his limbs on the right. He has profound communication problems.

“Though it is difficult to asses, it is believed there is significant cognitive impairments.

“He will never be capable of living independently.”

Efforts are being made to teach Mr Gibson to use a touch pad computer to help with communication but it is a substantial and very long process.

The court was told the taxi row broke out in the early hours of the morning, which led to the fight between Mr Gibson and Iles.

Mr Gibson had started walking off up the road, though may have turned around and said something, when Iles went after him, knocking him to the ground with “a very powerful blow

Mr Smith said: “He was unconscious and made no effort to defend himself but Mr Iles approached him, knelt or crouched down beside him and punched him four to five times with clenched fists to his head.”

The court heard one witness described the punches as “sickening blows” while Mr Gibson lay defenceless.

Jailing him Judge John Milford told Iles: “The initial incident of violence between you was not serious and it was broken up and that could and should have been the end of it.

    “Sadly it was not.

“The result was Mr Gibson has suffered what the consultant describes as severe brain injury.

    “I prefer catastrophic.

“He is no longer capable of independent living, he has little powers of communication, he is still in hospital where he receives full time care and that looks to be, I’m sad to say, the future for him.”

The judge said he was constrained by government guidelines in determining the prison sentence.

He added: “No sentence that this court can pass will ever seem sufficient for the family.”

Robert Adams, defending, said: “He did not intend this level of injury, it was far in excess of what he ever contemplated.”

    Aftermath

    More on Jerrin Stulken.

    Ultimate fighting banned in Webster
2011 death led to outlawing in Watertown
    April 28, 2012|JEFF BAHR | jbahr@aberdeennews.com

The drive to ban ultimate fighting in Watertown and Webster began with a 2011 death in Watertown.

Webster city officials say that banning the sport didn't become an issue in Webster until Watertown voters banned the sport in June 2011.

Justin Jaton, 26, died after suffering injuries outside a Watertown bar in March 2011. Jerrin Stulken, a mixed martial arts trainer, pleaded guilty to manslaughter and aggravated assault and was sentenced to seven years in prison.

It was after that death that Watertown residents started talking about an ordinance to ban ultimate fighting, also known as mixed martial arts.

“That's what really got the conversation started in Watertown,” said Nancy York, who was a Watertown City Council member at the time.

After enough petitions were received to put the question on the ballot, Watertown voters approved an initiated ordinance.

A similar ordinance was passed on April 10 by Webster residents.

The events in Watertown got Webster residents interested in doing the same thing, said Webster Mayor Mike Grosek.

“It was not an issue here at all until that,” Grosek said.

“That's absolutely correct,” said Webster City Councilman Morgan Dorsett.

But South Dakota law gives voters the opportunity to make laws, and the majority did not appreciate this type of entertainment in town, Grosek said. The ordinance banning ultimate fighting passed 311 to 192.

Before mixed martial arts was banned from the city, the Webster Armory hosted four mixed martial arts events. Three of them were presented by Fury Ultimate Cage Fighting, which is based in Watertown. The final one was March 31.

Michael Alama, the president of Fury Ultimate Cage Fighting, did not like the election results in Webster. He is “very displeased with the outcome when their hometown hero, Brock Lesnar, was the heavyweight champion of the UFC,” Alama said, referring to Ultimate Fighting Championships.

Alama plans to bring the issue back to the voters of Watertown in November. This summer, he will begin gathering signatures to place an initiated ordinance on the election ballot.

“I think that it's absolutely absurd to ban a legal business,” Alama said.

The Rev. John Hisel, pastor of United Methodist Church in Webster, was one of the leaders of the effort to outlaw MMA in Webster.

The group feels vindicated, he said.

“I often refer to what happened as a slam dunk for the citizens of Webster, who kind of had to wrestle government away from the City Council.”

Members of the group objected to the fights. But they also weren’t happy that a special malt liquor license was granted to sell beer during the matches, he said.

“It is something we just didn't feel we needed in our town,” Hisel said. “That Armory has always been a place of celebrating — life and sporting events and graduations. We felt it was reducing it to something that we could not be proud of.”

Someone, Hisel noted, said that MMA is “just a sidestep from a regular street fight, except it's in a cage.” Supporters of the ban feel the activity is brutal and there's “nothing nice about it. We didn't want our children to be exposed to it,” he said.

Alama said a cage is the safest spot to house the competitors.

“If you put them in a boxing ring, they can fall through the ropes. Not only can they injure themselves, but they can injure anybody that's sitting around ringside,” he said.

How does Alama feel about having his sport compared to a street fight?

“I respond that in a street fight people die all the time. To date, no one has ever died in the cage, anywhere.”

Alama said Fury Ultimate Cage Fighting didn't have a problem in Webster. He has also brought shows to Mitchell, Brookings, Sturgis and Sioux City, Iowa.

Before Jaton died, MMA fights had been taking place in Watertown without much notice, York said.

But after the incident, Watertown Mayor Gary Williams received lots of calls from people saying, “we've got to do something about this,” York said.

York also heard from a lot of her constituents. When you're serving “in a City Council chair, you have to listen to what people are asking you to do,” she said.

After 17 years on the Watertown City Council, York didn’t run last summer.

“But it really didn't have anything to do with this issue,” she said. “I'd made that decision before.”

Jason Ehresmann, owner and promoter of South Dakota Total Combat, said many people don't understand the sport yet.

“A lot of guys around here don't train, so it does kind of come off as bar brawling,” he said.

How a show comes off depends a lot on the promoter, Ehresmann said.

but the subject of a manhunt...
Martial Arts Champ Wanted by Police After Man Dies
    18:01 22/08/2012
    KIEV, August 22 (RIA Novosti)

A Russian martial arts champion is wanted by police in connection with an incident at a beach resort that left a man dead, a local department of the Ukrainian police said Wednesday.

Stanislav Molodtsov, who has reportedly won titles in the martial arts of sambo and pankration, is suspected of causing serious injuries to a member of the military who later died in hospital.

The incident is alleged to have taken place at a bar in the seaside village of Andreevka near the Ukrainian city of Sevastopol in the Crimea.

“Stanislav Molodtsov, a multiple winner of sambo and pankration championships, caused serious bodily harm to a 24-year-old contracted serviceman,” a statement on the Sevastopol police website said.

The police did not name the victim, but said he was struck in the face, collapsed and lost consciousness before later dying in hospital.

Police said they suspected Molodtsov may attempt to leave Ukraine.

Another Russian martial arts champion, Rasul Mirzaev, is on trial in connection with the death of a 19-year-old student who died after Mirzaev punched him outside a Moscow nightclub last year, in a case which has garnered much media attention.

The case rests on whether the student, Ivan Agafonov, was killed by the punch or by striking his head on the sidewalk as he fell after he was struck.

According to some reports, Molodtsov appeared as a witness at Mirzaev’s trial.
Also, some follow up on Mirzayev.
Charges reduced for martial arts killer Mirzayev
    17:15 12/01/2012
    MOSCOW, January 12 (RIA Novosti)

The charges against Rasul Mirzayev, the world champion in mixed martial arts who killed a student in Moscow last summer, have been reduced, a lawyer for the student’s family told the RAPSI news agency.

Mirzayev, 25, from Russia’s North Caucasus republic of Dagestan, is accused of killing Ivan Agafonov, 19, on August 13, 2011 after arguing over a young woman outside a nightclub in downtown Moscow.

“Today investigators charged Mirzayev with Article 109 of Russia’s Criminal Code - ‘infliction of death by negligence’ - which is milder than Article 111 - ‘intentional infliction of a grave injury leading to death,’” attorney Oxana Mikhalkina said.

The Investigative Committee confirmed that the charges had been reduced.

Mikhalkina also said the champion faces no more than two years in prison compared with up to 15 years under the previous charge.

Agafonov’s friends said that the argument started with an innocent prank - Agafonov was playing with a toy car, walked up to Mirzayev’s girlfriend, Alla, and offered her a ride as a joke. But Mirzayev decided Agafonov had insulted her.

The world champion hit Agafonov in the face, and the young man fell down and struck his head against a metal drain cover. He was taken to hospital and died without regaining consciousness a few days later.

Moscow’s Presnensky Court in mid-December extended pre-trial custody for Mirzayev until February 17.

Willie 'Slick' Parks, of Albuquerque, faces aggravated assault charges and was ordered held on $50,000 cash bail (Bernalillo County Metropolitan Detention Center)

A mixed martial arts fighter who police say beat his pregnant girlfriend so badly she later miscarried has turned himself into authorities.

Willie "Slick" Parks, of Albuquerque, faces aggravated assault charges and was ordered held on $50,000 cash bail after he was taken into custody by U.S. Marshals.

According to a criminal complaint released Sunday, the 28-year-old's girlfriend told police that she blacked out during the beating and Parks didn't allow her to go to the doctor for days. The complaint says she suffered a broken nose, concussion and a miscarriage.

Police say Parks beat her after an argument over clothes she was wearing.

It was unclear if Parks at an attorney.

Parks is a MMA welterweight who has fought in El Paso, Texas, and Las Vegas.

Hawaii island martial arts fighter pleads guilty to manslaughter
    By Associated Press
    POSTED: 04:14 a.m. HST, Aug 30, 2012

HILO >> A 21-year-old Big Island amateur mixed martial arts fighter has pleaded guilty to manslaughter and intimidating a witness.

Waylen Keone Carenio entered the plea on Tuesday, during the second day of jury selection in his manslaughter trial. He was on trial for the death of a man found unconscious outside a Hilo sports bar last year.

An autopsy shows 44-year-old Roy Williams died of blunt force trauma to the head. Witnesses say the two men were involved in a fight and that Williams fell and hit his head on the pavement.

Carenio's attorney tells Hawaii Tribune-Herald the plea decision came after the judge ruled information from his witness intimidation case could be heard at the manslaughter trial. He was also charged with intimidating a witness to the fight.

    Ralph Garcia “Plexin Texan” Jr.

Texas mixed martial arts fighter charged in 2011 fatal shooting of man on bicycle
By Associated Press, Updated: Friday, September 7, 9:20 AM

GALVESTON, Texas — A mixed martial arts fighter in Texas has been charged in the 2011 shooting death of a man on a bicycle after the pair apparently argued.

Galveston police say 23-year-old Ralph Garcia “Plexin Texan” Jr. of Galveston has been charged with murder.

Police Chief Henry Porretto says investigators do not believe Garcia knew 27-year-old Maxie Troy Flowers of Galveston. Flowers was found dead last Oct. 13 on a street. Porretto says police are investigating whether the two men happened to cross paths, got into an argument and Garcia felt disrespected.

Galveston County Jail records show Garcia was being held Friday on $500,000 bond. Online records did not list an attorney for Garcia, who was arrested Wednesday night at a training center.

    Wyatt pleads guilty

More on Wyatt. Worst story ever.

Ex-MMA fighter pleads guilty to friend's grisly murder in Northern California
    September 8, 2012 | 12:48 pm

It was a murder so grisly that a local newspaper didn’t think some of its readers could handle the details.

“This report contains graphic content that some readers may find disturbing,” warned an editor’s note Saturday in the Times-Standard of Eureka, Calif.

Taylor Powell, 21, was dead on a couch when police arrived at the scene in the Northern California town of Requa, his tongue cut out, his chest carved open and his charred heart in a wood-burning stove.

Jarrod Wyatt, 27, was naked and smeared with blood from head to toe. “I killed him,” officers said he told them.

Wyatt was scheduled to go on trial next week in Crescent City for the March 2010 killing but Thursday night pleaded guilty to first-degree murder involving mayhem and was sentenced to 50 years to life in prison.
The two men were friends and mixed-martial arts fighters. They had eaten hallucinogenic mushrooms before the attack, prosecutors said.

An autopsy showed that Taylor had been butchered while he was still alive.

Wyatt had plead guilty by reason of insanity, but psychiatric tests deemed him fit for trial. His lawyer, James Fallman, told the Times-Standard that Wyatt decided this week that he did not want to testify, risk the possibility of a life sentence or subject the victim’s mother to the ordeal of a trial.

Under the plea deal, he will be eligible for parole in 2062.

Mahwah martial-arts trainer pleads guilty to fraudulent documents
    Monday September 17, 2012, 12:00 PM
    BY KIBRET MARKOS
    STAFF WRITER

A Mahwah martial-arts trainer pleaded guilty Monday to submitting false documents so that his trainees could fight without undergoing mandatory physical exams and medical tests.

Philip Dunlap, 49, admitted in Superior Court in Hackensack that between 2007 and 2011, he submitted forged medical documents and consent-to-fight forms to the State Athletic Control Board, which regulates amateur mixed martial arts.

The medical forms certified that a doctor had examined certain fighters whom Dunlap trained and that they were medically cleared to participate in contests. The consent-to-fight forms certified that the fighters signed the form.

But an investigation revealed that the fighters did not receive the physicals, the doctor did not sign the medical forms, and the fighters did not sign the consent forms.

Dunlap faces probation and up to 200 hours of community service when he is sentenced Oct. 26.

    Liam Hall

Martial arts expert back behind bars after knife attack on soldier
    4:22pm Tuesday 2nd October 2012 in News

A MAN jailed for killing another martial arts expert at a party was back behind bars last night for a knife attack on a soldier.

Liam Hall, 24, clashed with 20-year-old squaddie Paul Gray at a house in Chilton, County Durham, late on May 14 this year.

The confrontation almost led to Mr Gray losing a thumb and left him fearing for his future in the army, a court heard yesterday.

Hall, of Honister Place, in nearby Newton Aycliffe, was jailed for 21 months after he admitted a charge of unlawful wounding.

Teesside Crown Court heard that he got two-and-a-half years in 2010 for the manslaughter of Neil Jones the previous year.

Mr Jones was punched in the head and kicked as he was falling to the floor, where he remained unconscious and later died.

Hall was said to have been sober when he arrived the house where others had been drinking vodka and smoking cannabis.

The argument is said to have been started over missing drugs, and cage-fighter Hall reacted “instinctively” by lashing out.

He later told police: "What I am training for is to knock people out, to get on top of them and to smash people's heads in."

The court heard that both men had martial arts backgrounds, and Judge Peter Fox, QC, said he was concerned about the training methods.

Yesterday, the court heard how Hall confronted Mr Gray at the house he was looking after in Raby Terrace, Chilton.

The victim is said to have gone there looking for the householder, but Hall's barrister, Christopher Morrison, said he was uninvited.

It was agreed that the attacker had a wrong “drunken perception” of danger after “getting wrecked” on drink and drugs.

Mr Gray suffered two small cuts to his left hand and two deep ones to his right hand – one which severed the tendons in his thumb.

In a statement, he said he had suffered nightmares and had – now unfounded – fears he would not be able to serve in Afghanistan.

Judge Tony Briggs told Hall: “You might well have ended up facing a more serious charge than the one you admitted.

“Looking at your record, it is clear you have difficulty controlling your temper and that's made worse when you take a lot of drink and drugs.

“It is perfectly plain your perception was very much affected and when these matters are in combination, it can be highly dangerous.”
Reacting '“instinctively” by lashing out' is not a martial arts reaction. Quite the opposite.

Well, when you don't "temper" the physical aspects of the MA with some disciple, there is no reason to doubt that people trained to fight will solve their problems by fighting.
Compound that issue with drugs and, well, no good can come of it.

    Who am I to judge?
    LOL !

There was a time when MA teachers believed they SHOULD have an obligation to train "good people".
Sure that wasn't always the case and many systems became renown because practitioners were NOT nice people and that is why a certain ethic was attempted.
While I agree that the MA school is NOT the place for morals to be instilled, that falls on the parents, it is however a place where proper ethics and disciplined should be enforced.

    True dat.
Be the change you want to see happen.

I must state an observation though:
Every MA that was a great fighter, that I knew of course, was also an ass.
Every MA that was a "Miyagi type", were, at best, "OK".
I knew a couple that were both but that was because they HAD been asses when younger and good fighters and mellowed out with age and become great teachers.
