MANILA, Philippines – An 11-year-old junior member of the Philippine wushu team died after falling from the top bunk of a double-deck bed inside the athletes’ dormitory at the Rizal Memorial Sports Complex in Malate, Manila early Saturday morning, September 29.

Rastafari Daraliay reportedly fell from his bed at around 3 am, but got back up and returned to sleep. Hours later, the victim was found with his mouth frothing. He later died at the hospital.

The Wushu Federation of the Philippines confirmed the incident to several media outlets.

The Philippine Sports Commission will hold a press conference on Monday.

There's a vid. I'm going to split this into an indie RIP Rastafari Daraliay thread off the Martial Arts Death one because there's more.

Parents of late wushu athlete convinced son’s death an accident
    ABS-CBN News
    Posted at Oct 23 2018 11:57 PM

The parents of the late young wushu athlete Rastafari Daraliay said the Philippine Sports Commission and the Wushu Federation of the Philippines weren’t remiss with their duties in relation to the death of their son.

The 11-year-old died after a freak accident at Rizal Memorial Sports Complex wushu dormitory late last month. He stayed on and off at the dorm for the past three years as requested by his parents, Vincent and Hazel Daraliay.

“They responded pretty well. Commissioner Butch Ramirez came on the first day of the wake of Rasta. The Wushu Federation was at the hospital when they rushed him to the hospital,” said Vincent on ANC’s “Hardball.” Vincent, Hazel and their daughter Zion was at ANC’s studio in ABS-CBN compound to talk about Rastafari’s death.

Rastafari fell off the top bunk of a double decker bed. He reportedly went back to sleep after telling his teammates he was OK, but never woke up.

Vincent Daraliay said the PSC and the Wushu Federation of the Philippines probed the incident and were satisfied with the explanations.

“On our side we are convinced that it was an accident. For us it was nobody's fault,” Daraliay said.

READ: PSC, Wushu Federation to extend support to late athlete's family
“PSC has responded when we asked what took them so long to take him to the hospital, why they used a taxi instead of the ambulance, they had an explanation for everything. They shouldered a big part of the burial expenses.”

But Daraliay acknowledged the agency could have done a bit more to prevent such accidents.

“Probably if they were a little bit more strict and they cared a little bit more on the safety of the athletes, especially the junior athletes. But we're relatively OK with the explanation they provided,” Daraliay said.

Vicent said he wants the PSC to look after the welfare of his daughter, Zion, also a wushu athlete. He said she is one of the reasons why the family maintained peace with the PSC.

“We could have burned bridges with the PSC or the wushu federation when this happened by just blaming them, but the problem is we have a daughter who is also an athlete. We asked her if she still wants to do it, she still wants to be an athlete,” he said.

“So we just wanted PSC and wushu federation na lang to just help us and probably before we send her back to training to make sure the place is safe for them for the junior athletes. That's all we're asking. They still have a dream to fulfill.”

Daraliay said they are also working on putting up an advocacy group in the name of Rastafari.

“It's gonna be called ‘RASTA’. After my son's name, it stands for Rastafari Advocacy for the Safety of Today's Athletes,” he said. “Basically we want to do something on the safety of athletes especially young athletes like my daughter.”

Well to start with, I agree with lkfmdc's tournament conditions. Free fight training or tournament should come close to real fight in order to test the athlete's skill. But to me, death is not an acceptable outcome. So the question is where do we draw the line. That means what is the acceptable format, rules, etc. ?

    Irina Rybnikova

How tragic. Then again, using a phone in a charger in the bath is foolish.

TEENAGE MARTIAL ARTS CHAMPION DIES AFTER DROPPING MOBILE PHONE IN THE BATH

A teenage girl in Russia, who was a martial arts champion, was electrocuted to death when she dropped her phone in the bath. Irina Rybnikova, 15, had been using a cable to charge her device in the Siberian city of Bratsk when the tragic incident occurred last Saturday.

Her sister Tatiana, 25, told the newspaper Komsomolskaya Pravda that she had become the godmother to her young daughter. She told the paper: “My child adored her and called her 'nanny.' And now she is not with us anymore. Our hearts are torn up. It is so quiet and feels empty at home without her.”

Rybnikov was a champion fighter in pankration, which is a version of no rules boxing that originated in ancient Greece. She had won the all-Russian championship two months ago and had been selected for her country's national team.

One of her friends said: “She was a great person, the best and the most loved. She always dreamed of success in sports. We wanted to go together with her to another city and study there. Everybody loved her. She was sociable, kind and beautiful."

Her sports federation issued a statement saying: “A tragic accident has taken the life of our champion, friend, and student Irina Rybnikova, 15. She was a candidate for Master of Sports in pankration, our beloved girl. Rest in peace.”

Yury Agrafonov, the head of the radio-electronic department of Irkutsk State University, said: “Water is a good conductor for a current, this is why there was a short circuit when the phone fell into the water. If the phone had not been plugged in to 220 volts, the tragedy would not have happened.”

Last week, a 16-year-old boy in Malaysia was electrocuted while charging his mobile phone at his home. The victim, identified as Mohd Aidi Azzhar Zahrin, was found dead by his mother. He was wearing the headphones while the handphone was charging, the New Strait Times reported.

    RIP Nitiyaporn Srisalai

Female muay thai champ found hanged in Ratchaburi

Breaking News December 18, 2018 19:30 By The Nation

A world muay thai champion was found hanged in her room at a boarding house near her university in Ratchaburi’s Mueang district yesterday morning, police said on Tuesday.

Police were alerted after Nitiyaporn Srisalai, 22, was found hanging from a nylon rope attached to the door frame at the back of the room, in Moo 5 village in Tambon Don Tako. Police did not find any trace of foul play, but there was a half-finished bottle of whisky in the room.
Nitiyaporn was a fourth-year student at Rajabhat University, Moo Ban Jom Bueng, majoring in muay thai. She was well-known through her muay thai alias as Hong Khao of Rajabhat Moo Ban Jom Bueng. She first became a World Muay Thai Organisation champion in the 51-kilogram category, before going on to winning the title in the 52kg category. Nitiyaporn’s friends told police that they had been drinking with her at 8pm on Sunday night, before returning to their rooms. One of the friends called on her the following morning, but she did not answer persistent knocks on the door. They asked the owner of the boarding house to open the door with a spare key, only to find the body.

Charnchai Yommadit, president of the International Muay Thai Study Association, said on Tuesday that Nitiyaporn had been a highly capable muay thai boxer and her death was a great loss to the sport. Nitiyaporn’s parents were divorced and she had had to earn her own living and pay for her studies by boxing, he added.

    RIP Deng Qi

I've trained at the Xiaolong school, the year my Master Shi Decheng was away.

Young girl sent to kung fu school to lose weight drops dead 48 hours later
Deng Qi's father believes she was bullied to death - something the famous Shaolin Xiaolong Kung Fu School strenuously denies
    By John Feng Amber Hicks
    13:27, 15 APR 2019

A young girl sent to a kung fu school to lose weight dropped dead less than 48 hours after arriving.

Six-year-old Deng Qi's dad waved goodbye to his "happy" daughter as she embarked on her first day at the school.

But less than two days later he received a call saying she had collapsed and been pronounced dead after failing to respond to treatment.

The youngster's family allege she was bullied to death at the famous Shaolin Xiaolong Kung Fu School, which she enrolled at on April 7.

Her father said she had been "healthy and happy" when he dropped her off on her first day.

"The next we saw our daughter was at 7 or 8pm [on 9th April] in the mortuary," he sobbed.

Deng Qi before enrolling at the school (Image: AsiaWire)

He added: "Her face was purple and there was bruising on her stomach from having been kicked."

CCTV footage he obtained from the school allegedly shows Deng Qi being surrounded by several uniformed pupils, who her father claims punched and kicked her.

He said: "The camera was very far away from our daughter, but it looks like someone pushes her over and then kicks and punches her."

The video shows several of the pupils later carrying Deng Qi down a grandstand to the school nurse.

The martial arts school has strongly denied the allegations of bullying leading to Deng Qi's death.

They have confirmed that the Dengfeng Public Security Bureau is currently investigating the case but released their own statement, threatening media outlets running the Deng family's opinions on the pupils tragic death.

The statement - issued by their director, surnamed Chen, on 14th April - claims Deng Qi "collapsed while playing", calling all other theories "libellous rumours".

It revealed that the schoolgirl was sent to the kung fu school for exercise because she weighed over 50 kilogrammes (110 lb / 7st 8 ) and had trouble walking as a result.

The school said there was "no evidence" to suggest Deng Qi had been beaten to death, and that she had not had any physical altercations with any of her classmates.

The institution added finally that it "reserved the right to take legal action" against media outlets which suggest otherwise and continue to cause "great loss to the school's reputation and income".

The boarding school, which charged her parents 21,000 RMB (£2,390) per year, is located in the county-level city of Dengfeng in Central China's Henan Province.

It is where the original Shaolin Monastery is believed to have been founded in the 5th century AD.

The school is one a commercial offshoots of the Shaolin Temple - itself a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2010 - and the girl's parents sent her there "for some exercise" on the recommendation of a neighbour.

Martial arts school death not suspicious

An investigation team has ruled out beating or other suspicious circumstances as the cause of death for a seven-year-old girl who died at a martial arts school in Dengfeng, Central China's Henan province, two days after she enrolled, CCTV has reported.

The conclusion comes after forensic experts from Dengfeng and Zhengzhou conducted an examination of the girl's remains and public security carried out an investigation at the school.

The girl's parents had no objection to the findings, and the case will not be registered as a criminal case.

The girl's parents sent her to Xiaolong Martial Arts School on Sunday. At 9:40 am on Tuesday she fell to the ground during a class break and died before an ambulance could reach the scene.

According to previous media reports, the girl's father said there were kick marks on her stomach when he saw her remains at the mortuary.

"The surveillance camera was far from my daughter. It seems like someone pushed and kicked her," Deng said after watching a video clip obtained from the school.

Public information shows that Xiaolong Martial Arts School's legal representative is Chen Tongshan, father of actor Shi Xiaolong.

The school has more than 12,000 students and over 2,000 teachers.

    Maxim Dadashev

I thought about posting this under the MMA deaths, but boxing felt more like something that should be posted in Martial Arts Deaths

Boxer Maxim Dadashev, who suffered severe brain injury during Friday fight, has died at 28
    By ANDY CLAYTON
    | NEW YORK DAILY NEWS |

Maxim Dadashev receives attention in his corner after his corner threw in the towel following the eleventh round of his junior welterweight IBF World Title Elimination fight against Subriel Matias (not pictured) at The Theater at MGM National Harbor on July 19, 2019 in Oxon Hill, Maryland. (Scott Taetsch/Getty Images)

Russia-born boxer Maxim Dadashev has died from injuries suffered in the ring. He was 28.

His death was first confirmed by his trainer James “Buddy” McGirt and Donatas Janusevicius, Dadashev’s strength and conditioning coach, and later by the Russian Boxing Federation.

“The Russian Boxing Federation expresses deep condolences to Maxim’s relatives and close ones,” the federation said in a statement. “We mourn together with you.”

The rising star — who beat two former world lightweight champions, Darleys Perez and Antonio DeMarco, last year — was promoted by Top Rank Boxing.

“Maxim was a terrific young man,” Top Rank boss Bob Arum said in a statement. “We are all saddened and affected by his untimely death.”

Dadashev, who collapsed after a loss to undefeated Subriel Matias in their junior welterweight (140-pound) bout at the Theater at MGM National Harbor in Oxon Hill, Maryland on Friday, underwent surgery early Saturday morning to relieve swelling on his brain.

He was then reportedly placed in a medically induced coma.

Dadashev, originally from St. Petersburg, Russia, who had not lost in 13 previous fights, collapsed in the aisle as he tried to leave the ring under his own power, and vomited, before being placed on a stretcher and rushed to a local hospital.

The fight — an IBF World Title Elimination fight, with the winner earning the right to challenge IBF title-holder Josh Taylor — had been stopped by McGirt before the 12th-round bell.

McGirt was seen on video pleading with Dadashev to let him end the fight.

“Max, you’re getting hit too much,” McGirt said after the 11th round. “Please, Max, Please.”

Dadashev wouldn’t give up so McGirt ended the fight by telling the ringside physician, “That’s it, doc.”

“I didn’t want him to go in the 12th round either,” Dadashev’s manager Egis Klimas told ESPN after the fight.

But he didn’t think his boxer was in serious danger.

“It never looked like Max was, like shook down, or he was already, like, going down,” Klimas said, “I never saw that.”

The fight was the co-main event on the Friday card aired by ESPN.

“I just hope that Maxim is all right,” said Matias after the fight, per The Washington Post. “He is a great fighter and a warrior.”

The neurosurgeon who performed the two-hour surgery on the boxer Saturday morning told his manager that Dadashev was showing signs of severe brain damage, ESPN reported.

Russian boxer Maxim Dadashev died Tuesday after suffering a similar brain injury during Friday's fight in Maryland against Subriel Matias of Puerto Rico. He was 28.

Santillan (19-6-2), a super lightweight, made his pro debut in 2015. Eight of his 19 victories came by knockout. He was the son of fighter Hugo Alfredo Santillan and was from the same region, Santa Fe, as Marcos Rene "Chino" Maidana.

According to ringside reports, Santillan's nose began to bleed in the fourth round and, though he raised his arm in victory after the fight, he passed out as the judges were announcing the draw -- scored 95-95, 93-97 and 96-94 -- against Abreu (10-1-1).

"Upon admission to the hospital, he had successive kidney failure and he did not come out of his coma," Olocco said. "He had swelling of his brain and he never recovered consciousness. The swelling continued to worsen, and it affected the functioning of the rest of his organs."

    RIP Hilal al-Haj

    What a tragic story.

In search of glory, Yemen athlete drowns in Med trying to reach Europe
    AFP

Dubai (AFP) - Slim and with a tight-trimmed beard, Yemeni Kung Fu champion Hilal al-Haj dreamed of finding athletic glory in Europe, but a risky sea journey to get there ended in tragedy.

The 25-year-old athlete drowned in the Mediterranean after being swept away as he attempted to swim from Morocco to the Spanish enclave of Melilla last week.

His family in Yemen's rebel-held capital Sanaa was expected on Friday to bury the 2011 Yemen Kung Fu champion, who had also racked up a series of medals from Asian and Arab championships.

"He was looking for a country that would appreciate his talent and recognise his value as a human being and athlete," his older brother Saeed said.

"He loved life, he detested war," he told AFP by phone.

Saeed saw his brother just hours before he headed to Morocco, where on September 16 he attempted the dangerous swim to the Spanish enclave.

The athlete was proud of his heritage, his brother said, but competing in a country pushed to the brink of famine by a years-long war between the government and rebels had brought challenges.

Yemen was rife with "contempt" and "injustice", Saeed said, adding his brother was treated unfairly by the Huthi rebels who took over the capital in 2014 despite taking no side in Yemen's conflict.

After returning to Sanaa from a championship in Azerbaijan, where Haj won third place representing Yemen, he expected to be celebrated by rebels.

"The answer was painful. They told him that no one had asked of him to raise the flag of Yemen," Saeed said.

    - 'Powerful wave' -

Years of war have made leaving and entering Yemen nearly impossible, but Haj faced even greater difficulties when attempting to cross over the heavily fortified land barrier surrounding Melilla, on the northern coast of Morocco.

After two months of failed attempts, he decided to swim for it, his brother said.

"It was a short distance. People before him have tried and succeeded," he told AFP.

"My brother was athletic, it seemed like it would be easy, but tragedy struck and he was swept away by a powerful wave."

A friend accompanying Haj on the swim who managed to make it safely to the Spanish enclave said the journey was "extremely difficult".

"The waves were so high," the friend, who asked to remain anonymous, told AFP.

"When (Haj) screamed, I thought it was because he was tired. I didn't know he was drowning."

Haj's body was recovered and flown into Yemen's southern city of Aden on Thursday. It was expected to be carried on to the capital in an ambulance, Saeed said.

Sanaa airport has been under blockade since 2017 by a Saudi-led military coalition backing the government against the Iran-aligned Huthis.

Haj's father and younger brother are expected to arrive from Saudi Arabia to attend the funeral.

"He always said that we can't reach our sports goals by staying in Yemen," Haj's friend Jamal el-Sabri told AFP.

"The failure of the sports institutions, corruption and nepotism destroy sports and talent. The more time passes, life is becoming more difficult and our ambitions are dying."

    Patrick Day

Boxer Patrick Day Dies From Traumatic Brain Injury Suffered in Super Welterweight Fight

Patrick Day dies after suffering traumatic brain injury in welterweight fight

Junior middleweight Patrick Day has died from injuries sustained in his 10th-round knockout in Chicago on Saturday night, the boxer’s management company, DiBella Entertainment, announced on Wednesday.

According to the statement, Day succumbed to the traumatic brain injury he suffered in his title bout loss to defending champion Charles Conwell. He was surrounded by his family, close friends and members of his boxing team at the time of his death.

"On behalf of Patrick's family, team, and those closest to him, we are grateful for the prayers, expressions of support and outpouring of love for Pat that have been so obvious since his injury," the statement read.

Day, 27, fell to the canvas on Saturday after falling under a barrage of punches in the 10th and final round. Day was treated by a doctor in the ring and then was rushed off on a stretcher by paramedics and transported to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, where he underwent emergency brain surgery and fell into a coma shortly afterward.

As of Sunday evening, Day was still in a coma and was in “extremely critical condition,” per DiBella Entertainment.

In an emotional open letter to Day on Monday, Conwell said he had replayed the fight "over and over in my head" and was riddled with feelings of guilt and regret over the outcome.

"If I could take it all back I would. No one deserves for this to happen to them," Conwell wrote in the post. "I prayed for you so many times and shedded so many tears because I couldn't even imagine how my family and friends would feel."

DiBella Entertainment added that Day's death made it "very difficult to explain away or justify the dangers of boxing at a time like this."

"This is not a time where edicts or pronouncements are appropriate, or the answers are readily available. It is, however, a time for a call to action," the team said. "While we don't have the answers, we certainly know many of the questions, have the means to answer them, and have the opportunity to respond responsibly and accordingly and make boxing safer for all who participate. This is a way we can honor the legacy of Pat Day. Many people live much longer than Patrick's 27 years, wondering if they made a difference or positively affected their world. This was not the case for Patrick Day when he left us. Rest in peace and power, Pat, with the angels."

TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — A young boy is fighting for his life and could remain in a vegetative state even if he survives, after he was was thrown nearly 30 times in a judo class last week.

The seven-year-old student from Nanyang Elementary School in Taichung City's Fengyuan District, surnamed Huang (黃), attended his second week of judo classes in the basement of a gymnasium operated by Ruisui Elementary School at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday (April 21). During class, the 67-year old coach, surnamed Ho (何,) ordered a 10-year-old student to perform a shoulder throw on Huang multiple times.

After several throws, Huang began to complain of pain in his feet and head, and pleaded with the coach not to be thrown any further, even vomiting at one point. Unmoved, Ho ordered the child to be thrown 20 times.

In a video of the incident Huang can be seen crying and begging on his knees for the punishment to end. However, Ho then personally throws the child another seven times.

At around 9 p.m., Huang reportedly passed out, turned pale, and became unresponsive. Ho then called for an ambulance that rushed him to Feng Yuan Hospital for emergency treatment, reported Liberty Times.

Doctors found that Huang's injuries resembled those from a car crash and including a severe intracranial hemorrhage, which prompted them to perform an emergency craniotomy. After the operation, doctors declared that Huang was in a "brain dead state," and if he survives, he will likely remain in a vegetative state.

When visiting the hospital after the child underwent surgery, Ho initially claimed the child had fallen on his own. It was only after learning about the serious nature of his injuries did Ho admit that he and a student had thrown him many times.

When police took Ho in for questioning on April 23, he claimed the boy had cried when being thrown in previous classes and presumed he was complaining without good reason. Ho was then investigated for negligent bodily harm (過失傷害), before being released without bail.

Cho Chun-chung (卓俊忠), head prosecutor of the Taichung District Prosecutor's Office, said that Huang's parents pressed charges against Ho for negligent bodily harm and that they are not ruling out pressing charges for negligent homicide (過失重傷害) if their son dies, reported UDN. Huang's father said it would take a miracle for him to regain consciousness and he demanded an apology and explanation from Ho.

The Brazilian wrestler Leandro Lo, one of the world's top jiu-jitsu fighters and an eight-time world champion in the martial art, died on Sunday after being shot in the head by a man he argued with at a party in Sao Paulo, Brazil's largest city.

The murder occurred in the early hours of Sunday morning at the exclusive Club Sirio, in the south zone of Sao Paulo, where the athlete had gone with friends to enjoy a performance by a popular music group at a party.

"The idol of a sport, Leandro Lo leaves us materially," the Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Sport Confederation (CBJJE) said in a statement.

"We offer homage and reverence to the one who helped and inspires so many people to wear the kimono around the world."

According to witnesses, the wrestler got into an argument for reasons still unclear with a man who was apparently drunk and whom he pinned down with a typical martial arts armlock in an attempt to calm him down.

Once free, the assailant pulled out a gun and shot the world champion in the head.

He was eventually transferred to a hospital, where he was diagnosed as brain dead.

His assailant, who fled after the crime, was declared a fugitive, although the Sao Paulo Military Police said they had already identified him.

Leandro Pereira do Nascimento Lo, 33, was an eight-time world jiu-jitsu champion in five different categories and won five World Cup titles in the sport, as well as eight Pan-American titles in the sport.

The fighter, who won his first world title in 2012 in the lightweight category, was still active and in May this year he won a new world title, but in the middle-heavyweight category.

"The first title was the feeling of becoming world champion and this last one was the feeling of still becoming world champion, the two best feelings of my life," the fighter said in a post on his social media.

The Brazilian was scheduled to compete in the coming days in a championship in the United States.
