    Bei Shaolin Temple 北少林寺

Buddhism originated 1,500 years BC in ancient India. The founder of Buddhism is Sakyamuni, the name is a transliteration from Sanskrit India, Sakyamuni is the kind of meaning, Muni is the meaning of Jimo, Jimo is the meaning of clean, is a Buddhist consciousness. He is the Buddha Sakyamuni North Indians, is now Nepal, in India's northern, southern Tibet. According to Chinese historical records, he was born 26 years Jiayin Wang Zhou Zhao, with modern textual criticism is not the same as foreigners, many age difference. Buddha out in the weeks into the 1964 King Mu Ren Shen, 79-year-old Shi-Ting, we usually talk about 80-year-old Buddha Fozhu Shi, the actual age is 79-year-old, because we speak the Chinese nominal age, and the nominal age 80-year-old, chronological age is 79-year-old's death. If the records into the Sakyamuni Buddha out of this year should be 3015 years. 1500 years BC, when the Aryan people from India to the Ganges River Basin development, the main mode of production from livestock production to agricultural production. Due to favorable weather conditions, and the people learned to cultivation of higher rice production, combined with the use of iron productivity has been greatly improved. Slavery come into the fabric of society. At that time, the social crowd is divided into four grades:
① Brahmin (priests of religion, have the right to master the spirit and the right to education, religious and classical culture),
② Kshatriya (warrior class, was also the king and the nobility of the military, military and equip them with Executive power.),
③ Vaishyas (farmers, craftsmen, was also differentiated from the industrial and commercial property owners, loan-sharking business.),
④ Sudras (non-Aryan tribes indigenous civilians, the low status). There is also no social status of slaves, without caste, known as "untouchables", "not to touch" (untouchable). India was the main religion in society is Brahmanism, Brahmanism is a kind of polytheism, the worship of ancestors and gods of natural Wizard, believe in God, Raytheon, the god of justice, on God, Vulcan, Aeolus, the god of rain and other gods. Brahmanism is the maintenance of the slave society at the time of a religion. To promote its earnings reincarnation of the view that human behavior in this life (industry) of good and evil, reincarnation in the next life will bring a different karma; If you do not believe that the Vedic Brahmanism classic, or a violation of the provisions of caste, or there are acts of killing, and so on, will be the death of reincarnation for lower caste Dalits, or for livestock, and if the Vedic classical learning, asceticism, charity, to death for the upper caste reincarnation, and become a god, and Tai Fan-in-one. Brahmanism promote the supremacy of Brahmin caste, Brahma said that I made with Brahman, Chhetri made by hand, by making Vaishyas legs, feet made Sudras, and provides for their professional community, not be changed forever. Brahmanism stressed that offer worship to God for an annual religious ceremony to be held on many occasions, including Ma Festival, ancestors of the festival, the festival gods, the Vatican ceremony, all kinds of sacrifice Wizard Festival. When to sacrifice a large number of livestock slaughter, a large number of followers cost of property, land and even sacrifice to the gods - the real Brahman.

I would like to point out a couple of things here.

Buddhism originated in 500BCE not 1500BC.
It has recently celebrated 2500 years of existence though in all its flavours.
The Buddha founded nothing and he himself was not a buddhist much in teh same sense that jesus wasn't a christian.

The Buddha Guatamas entire life is fairly well documented though. Nepal was always Nepal it was never "North India". In fact, the region has never been conquered by Indians or otherwise.

Buddhism found it's way into China in and around the end of the 5th century CE and the beginning of the 6th century CE. About 1000 years after the life of the Buddha Guatama.
Chinese historical records regarding Buddhism in that sense are reiterative and cannot stand on their own without the reiterative process being in place.

The caste system is a cultural attribution of Indian society born out of Hinduism. While there is some admonishment of this system in Buddhism, it is not entirely relevant to buddhism of later practice and definitely not relevant in context to buddhism in china which had a class system, but no caste system.

Hinduism is abandoned by buddhism in favour of the understanding of teh 4 noble truths and to adhere to the 8 fold path.

A good metaphor is how christianity is whole and apart from Judaism, but has the same root. there is a lot about Judaism that Christianity abandons. The same is true of the relationship between Hinduism and Buddhism.

We've reported on the Northern Temple project in our 2007 January/February (In Search of the Northern Shaolin Temple By Jonathan Oh) and in our 2007 November/December (Word from the Abbot By Chen Xinghua). This is interesting in juxtaposition with the recent acquisition of four Yunnan temples by Shaolin.

Shaolin Temple in Henan province will spend 2 billion yuan ($292.92 million) to rebuild a temple in Jixian county of Tianjin, United Daily News reported, according to chinataiwan.org.

After several rounds of fierce competition between architects from all over the world, Liu Peisen from Taiwan won the bidding with a plan to preserve the temple's traditional Tang and Song dynasties-era (AD 618-1279) look but also use environmentally-friendly and power-saving technologies.

Shi Yongxin, the abbot of Shaolin Temple, said the Jixian county temple, also known as the North Shaolin Temple, is the oldest branch of Shaolin Temple in the historical record. The temple was destroyed during World War II.

The renovation plan will be presided over by Shi and carried out by Liu in cooperation with Tsinghua University.
Shaolin to rebuilt northern temple at Tianjin
    By Wang Xiang | 2009-9-28

THE legendary Shaolin Monastery in central China will spend 2 billion yuan (US$292,9 million) on rebuilding its northern branch in Tianjin Municipality.

The temple's abbot Shi Yongxin said he had been advocating reconstruction of Shaolin's northern branch since 2002. He said the restoration would make it a world-famous religious and tourist attraction.

The reconstruction project will be guided by Tsinghua University and an architect from Taiwan.

The new temple will integrate modern techniques and ancient cultural factors, according to chief architect Liu Peisen.

Wood will be used as the main material for the monastery in the style of the Tang and Song dynasties but solar power, LED lights and a rainwater collection system will also ensure an energy-efficient building in tune with Buddhist beliefs, Liu told the newspaper.

The temple was razed by Japanese troops in World War II.

160 mln yuan invested in Shaolin temple rebuilding
    2009-09-30 08:55 BJT

A report that the Shaolin Temple will spend 2 billion yuan to rebuild a temple in Jixian county of Tianjin appeared on the Internet on Monday.

Shi Yongxin, the abbot of Shaolin Temple denies the 2-billion-yuan investment. But confirms the temple invested 160 million yuan according to a rebuilding plan. Further investment should be decided by the actual situation.

Back in 2007, the Shaolin Temple agreed with related departments in Tianjin on the rebuilding of the Jixian county temple, also known as the North Shaolin Temple. Shi says the North Shaolin Temple is the oldest branch of Shaolin Temple on record. Rebuilding of the temple will help spread the Shaolin culture. Recently, Shaolin Temple sped up its process of culture expansion and established many business entities. Some believe the moves help spread its culture, while some criticized it as exploitation of its culture.

Rebuilt Shaolin temple to pack a big punch
    08:51, September 30, 2009

The most important Shaolin Temple in northern China will leap into the modern era with a major upgrade, says abbot Shi Yongxin.

The ancient temple in Tianjin is located in Jixian county. The center, known as North Shaolin Temple, became a branch of the Shaolin Temple in 1315, during the Yuan Dynasty.

Shaolin Temple has long been revered as a seat of learning in both the martial arts and Buddhist teaching.

The building, which housed the oldest recorded branch of the Shaolin Temple, was destroyed by Japanese soldiers during the War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression (1937-45).

The rebuilding of the oldest recorded temple comes at a time when the legendary Shaolin Temple is expanding its influence worldwide. Established in 495, during the Northern Wei Dynasty, in central China's Henan province, the Shaolin Temple now has 29 branches on the Chinese mainland as well as branches in the United States, Germany and Italy.

"The plan (to rebuild the North Shaolin Temple) has been submitted to the local government for approval, but the budget has not been fixed," Shi Yongxin told China Daily in a telephone interview.

The Taipei-based United Daily News yesterday reported that the project will likely cost 2 billion yuan (293 million U.S. dollars).

Taiwan architect Ricky Liu has won the contract to rebuild the temple. His plan calls for the preservation of the temple's traditional Tang and Song dynasties-era (618-1279) outlook and will use environmentally-friendly and power-saving technology, said the report.

Beijing-based Tsinghua University will work with Liu on the restoration.

"There were 72 temples in the mountainous region of Jixian county in history, including one branch of Shaolin temple," a director of the Jixian county's cultural heritage bureau, surnamed Li, told China Daily Monday.

The only surviving part of the temple, a tower and some stone monuments inscribed during the Qing Dynasty (1636-1911), is under protection and closed to the public, Li said.

"The site of North Shaolin Temple used to cover about 500 mu (33 hectares) and our martial arts school will be one part of it after the reconstruction," said Zhu Qin, the headmaster of a martial arts vocational school in Jixian county.

The school has about 600 students and martial arts teachers who had trained in the Shaolin Temple in Henan province, she said.

There are no monks in North Shaolin temple at the moment, she added.
Temple's expansion in N China crucial for cultural inheritance: Shaolin principal abbot
    www.chinaview.cn 2009-09-30 07:29:33

ZHENGZHOU, Sept. 29 (Xinhua) -- The expansion of Shaolin Temple, one of China's most famous buddist temple and well-known for its association with Chinese Kung Fu, is vital for its cultural inheritance and publicity, said its principal abbot Shi Yongxin on Tuesday.

Shaolin is expected to renovate the North Shaolin Temple in Jixian County, Tianjin Municipality. The temple was the most important Shaolin temple in north China and became a branch of the Shaolin Temple in 1315.

The renovation deal was signed in 2007 by the Shaolin Temple and Jixian County government.

Both the investor and builder of the temple is the Shaolin Temple, according to the deal.

As to the rumored 2 billion yuan investment (292.8million U.S. dollars), Shi told the local Zhengzhou Evening News that "that figure is inaccurate. We have pumped in 160 million yuan, and future investment is yet to be decided."

"The renovation plan is still in the pipeline", said Shi, "The preparation, such as road building, is underway."

The North Shaolin Temple will maintain its original architecture features, Shi said.

The temple was destroyed by Japanese troops during the War of Resistance Against Japan (1937-1945).

The Shaolin Temple, built 1500 years ago during the Wei and Jin Dynasties, is famous for Buddhist teaching and Chinese martial arts, particularly Shaolin Kong Fu. It is located in north China's Henan Province.
