They couldn't just shoot his legs and remove the sword? Suicide by cop?

Man who set self on fire accused of assault with sword

Complaint: Man who set himself and his car on fire during traffic stop tried to stab friend

    (Photo: FILE PHOTO)

The man who set himself and his car on fire Friday during a traffic stop on Interstate 86 in the Village of Horseheads is accused of attempting to stab a friend with a sword hours earlier.

According to a criminal complaint obtained from the Chester County, Pennsylvania, District Attorney's Office, Darren Roy Desruisseaux, 31, of Coatesville, Pennsylvania, is charged with attempted criminal homicide, aggravated assault with intent to cause serious bodily injury, terroristic threats, simple assault, recklessly endangering another person and possession of an instrument of crime.

At 12:24 a.m. Friday, a police officer was dispatched to meet with an Uwchlan Township man for a report of an assault, according to an affidavit of probable cause. The man said Desruisseaux knocked on his door and, when he opened it, said, "I'm going to kill you," producing a sword about 5 feet long from behind his back, the affidavit says.

Using a two-handed grip, Desruisseaux thrust the tip of the sword at the man as he stood in the doorway to his apartment, the affidavit says. The man was able to close the door and heard the sword make contact with the door, and Desruisseaux then fled the scene, according to the affidavit. The man asked for a warrant to be issued for Desruisseaux. A friendship between the two was indicated in the criminal complaint.

Desruisseaux remains in guarded condition at Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester, a hospital spokesman said Tuesday.

After Desruisseaux was stopped in Horseheads by the Chemung County Sheriff's Office for speeding around 5 a.m. Friday, he locked himself inside the vehicle and set himself on fire with a can of gasoline stored in the rear of the vehicle. Deputies were able to put out the fire and pull him from the vehicle.

Desruisseaux was taken into custody and was first brought to Arnot Ogden Medical Center in Elmira before being transferred by helicopter to Strong.

Desruisseaux was charged as a fugitive once he arrived at Strong. He was scheduled to be arraigned on the criminal charges at the hospital, but his condition and injuries made that impossible, according to Rochester City Court Judge Melchor Castro, who said Desruisseaux might be arraigned this week, depending on his condition.

A call to Castro seeking the status of the arraignment was not returned Tuesday.

The Uwchlan Township Police Department again said Tuesday it was not going to issue a news release.

A party trick involving a sword and a sausage went horribly wrong when a man ended up with his nose sliced in two.

The shocking footage captures the moment the well-spirited friends make the unsightly gaff in front of horrified party-goers.

A man wearing a baseball cap leans back with the large sausage protruding from his mouth as another brandishes the weapon, ready to strike it in two with the sharp weapon.

    Scroll down for video

Get ready: One man leans back with a sausage in his mouth while another lines up the sword, ready to take a swing

Someone can be heard shouting 'right go' before the hapless swordsman steadies himself and takes a clumsy swing at the banger.

But the onlookers' cheers quickly turned to screams as they watched on in horror as the man misses the food, accidentally slicing the other guy's nose instead.

The victim can be seen recoiling away in shock, covering his face from the camera as his friend realizes the error and covers his mouth in horror.

Off target: The sword-brandishing man accidentally clips his friend's nose with the sword, almost slicing it off

Ouch! The sword slices down his nose, forcing the man to recoil and cover his face in front of shocked onlookers

It is not clear where the accident took place but the trademark red cups suggest it was a gathering at a house in the US.

It has attracted a mass following online with people suggesting 'don't try this at home'.

Footage showing the aftermath of the failed stunt can be viewed online but is too graphic to be shown here.

It is clear that the man needed hospital treatment following the accident.

Kerala Gym Owner Spent 2 Weeks in ICU After Sword Attack
All India | Reported by Sneha Mary Koshy, Edited by Deepshikha Ghosh | Updated: June 26, 2015 16:25 IST

Gym owner Jay Kumar Pillai was attacked with swords on June 5

Kochi: A gym owner is in hospital in Kerala after being attacked with swords earlier this month, allegedly by the drug mafia.

Jay Kumar Pillai is known for mobilizing a group of citizens to fight drug abuse among children in Kayankulam town. He was instrumental in reporting people allegedly involved in a drug racket to the police.

On June 5, he was attacked when he was on his way home after shutting his gym, at around 9 pm.

"They stopped my car and attacked me with a sword. There were seven or 10 of them. They slashed my hand," Mr Pillai said from his hospital bed in Kochi, swathed in bandages, on Friday, which is being marked as the International Day against Drug Abuse.

The activist was in the ICU for two weeks after the attack.

Mr Pillai said he had been filing complaints against the drug mafia for a year.

"Three months ago, a minister came to our village. At the time, we sent him a mass petition and on the same day we received a warning from the mafia, that if we complained against them, they would kill us," he said.

He alleges that some of his attackers had been released earlier by the police after being arrested on his information.

"The police told me that they only care about major quantities of drugs. If they catch a peddler with a small amount, they'll release him in a few days. This is why people are like them are roaming free," he said.

The police denied it. "The accused in this case have been identified and have nothing to do with the ealier drug racket. This is an attack based for personal vengeance in an area familiar with local street clashes," senior police officer Devamanohar S told NDTV.

Man accused in sword slaying enters insanity plea
Court declared Watertown man competent for trial earlier this month

    Young Choi
    MADISON, Wis. -

A Watertown man accused of killing another man with a sword pleaded not guilty by reason of mental disease of defect in court Thursday.

Young Choi, 30, was arrested last July for allegedly stabbing his neighbor, 27-year-old Dustin Vanderheyden, in the abdomen and partially scalping him the previous month. Vanderheyden died hours later in surgery.

In October, Choi's doctor testified he believed Choi was incompetent to face trial and court proceedings were temporarily suspended.

At a competency hearing June 12, the court acknowledged Choi had regained competency and was properly medicated.

Choi, who had been housed at Mendota Mental Health Institute in Madison, according to online records, was moved to the county jail on first-degree intentional homicide charges

    Death by your own sword?

Sword, duct tape among possible evidence collected in Savopoulos killings

The home where three members of the Savopoulos family were held and killed along with their housekeeper. (Jonathan Newton/The Washington Post)

By Keith L. Alexander July 1 at 7:54 PM

The assailant or assailants who killed three members of the Savopoulos family and their housekeeper in May are believed to have used a sword that belonged to the family, according to two people familiar with the investigation.

The sword, which was part of Savvas Savopoulos’s martial arts collection, was found at the scene with what appeared to be blood on it, according to the people. Authorities also found bits of duct tape that police think was used to subdue the victims. Tape remnants were on the body of Savopoulos’s wife, Amy, and on a chair where housekeeper Veralicia Figueroa was found, according to one official familiar with the case. That person said the tape also was stripped across a doggy door that led to the kitchen, keeping the family’s two dogs in the back yard.

The only person charged in the case so far, Daron Wint, 34, is set to appear in D.C. Superior Court on Thursday for a preliminary hearing that could shed more light on the crime or the ongoing investigation.

Police have said they think more than one person may have been involved in the killing of Savvas Savopoulos, 46; Amy Savopoulos, 47; the couple’s 10-year-old son, Philip; and Figueroa, 57. The four were held overnight at the Savopouloses’ stately Northwest Washington home and found the next day, May 14, after a fire was set.

The victims were killed after Savvas Savopoulos instructed his assistant to withdraw $40,000, all in $100 bills, from his bank account and deliver it to the home. The money — which was taken by the attacker or attackers — was placed inside a luxury red Mosler sports car in the garage.

    Daron Dylon Wint (Handout)

Wint, a onetime employee at Savvas Savopoulos’s custom steel and iron manufacturing company, was arrested after police found his DNA on the crust of a pizza that was delivered to the Savopoulos home the night of May 13.

While police are focusing on Wint, his newly hired attorney, Sean Hanover, said the presence of his client’s DNA on the pizza does not incriminate Wint as having been involved in the slayings. “The forensics may only suggest my client had a slice of pizza,” Hanover said. He said he believes Wint, who is charged with one count of first-degree murder, was being “set up” for the killings but would not elaborate.

Hanover also said he was looking into Savvas Savopoulos’s business dealings. Savopoulos was president and chief executive of American Iron Works, which helped build Verizon Center and CityCenterDC.

Savvas Savopoulos, who had an interest in martial arts, also was in the process of opening a martial arts center in Chantilly, Va. — a studio that had been set to open the day after the killings. The two people who discussed the sword found in the home spoke on the condition of anonymity because the criminal case is pending in court.

“We are looking at everyone who has had contact with Mr. Savopoulos and his family,” Hanover said.

Multiple bags containing hundreds of items have been collected as possible evidence from the home. The items are being analyzed by D.C. police, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, and the Secret Service. The Savopouloses’ home was not far from the vice president’s home.

There were two safes on the Savopoulos property — one in the garage, the other in the house.

    Mourners gather for Savopoulos funeral

The Washington couple and son were killed in May.

Prosecutors have said they were also seeking to compare a fingerprint found on a water bottle in the home with Wint’s fingerprints. Police also have said a boot print was found on a French door next to a broken pane of glass, indicating a possible forced entry into the home.

The Savopouloses’ two daughters were away at school when the killings occurred.

Among the dozens of family photographs displayed throughout the house, there was one picture of Amy Savopoulos sitting on a park bench on a sunny day with her young son, according to the official. With the photo was a message from her to son: “I love you Philip. You are a wonderful son,” she wrote. And then she continued: “I am going to be just fine.”

Another person killed with their own sword

Loyalist Chief Killed With Own Samurai Sword

Detectives stress the deadly attack on the UDA veteran is not linked to any terrorist activity or an internal paramilitary feud.

    18:59, UK, Thursday 09 July 2015

A coat of arms is pictured at the Police

Police described the attack as "extremely violent"

A loyalist paramilitary chief was killed with his own samurai sword in a brutal attack at his Belfast home, investigators have revealed.

Father-of-two Colin "Bap" Lindsay, 47, a leading figure in the Ulster Defence Association (UDA), was pronounced dead at the scene.

Another 52-year-old man, Stanley Wightman, found along with Mr Lindsay, underwent emergency surgery for "significant injuries" to his neck and arms, and remains in a critical condition in hospital.

A 46-year-old suspect was arrested at a nearby property and is being questioned by detectives on suspicion of murder and attempted murder.
    Colin "Bap" Lindsay murder

Richard Campbell named the men involved in appealing for information

Police have taken the unusual step of naming him as Albert Armstrong.

Detectives have stressed the attack at the property on Belfast's Belvoir estate appeared to have a "personal" motivation rather than being linked to any terrorist activity or an internal paramilitary feud.

Detective Chief Inspector Richard Campbell of the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) said a sword believed to be the murder weapon was found in a blue Mazda car, thought to be owned by Mr Armstrong.

When asked if the sword belonged to Mr Lindsay, he said: "I believe it was in his property, yes."

Describing the attack as "extremely violent", Mr Campbell said: "I am taking the unusual step today of naming the three men involved because I believe that it is important to do that as part of my appeal for information from the community."

Police were alerted to the attack after receiving a call from a member of the public shortly before 8pm on Wednesday.

After detaining Mr Armstrong at a property on the Belvoir estate and recovering the sword from the vehicle, police went to Mr Lindsay's home where they forced their way in.

Mr Campbell said: "They were confronted with the scene of two men very, very seriously injured.

"They attempted to render first aid while an ambulance was called."

He added: "This was a very brutal attack and obviously very unpleasant for the officers and anyone else who had to see it."

The detective would not be drawn on the victim's paramilitary links.

"Mr Lindsay was known to police but that shouldn't take away from the fact that he has suffered a very brutal death last night, completely unnecessary," Mr Campbell said.

"He is a father of 12-year-old and 18-year-old girls and he is survived by his mother, all of whom are grieving his loss today - that's what we need to concentrate on."

He added: "I would emphasise this appears to be an incident that is motivated as a result of personal relationships and there is no wider paramilitary or criminal involvement that should raise tensions."

The murder comes as the height of the loyalist marching season approaches.
This makes me wonder where both owners kept their swords. Perhaps their sword hanging feng shui was bad?

LARKSPUR, Colo. - A man who crashed a jousting performance at the Colorado Renaissance Festival got arrested after he was tackled by a wench for trying to steal a sword, The Denver Post reports.

According to the newspaper, a woman dressed as a medieval wench chased the man down, tackled him to the ground and didn't let go until deputies with the Douglas County Sheriff's Office got to the scene.

Connor Ward, 22, was arrested on suspicion of theft and attempted assault on a police officer after he reportedly resisted an officer who tried to handcuff him, Sheriff's spokeswoman Deborah Sherman, said.

Sherman also told the paper that Ward appeared to be drunk.

Man charged with killing Bucks father with sword

June Goodrich came downstairs from the bedroom of her Bucks County home Tuesday afternoon and stumbled upon a gruesome scene, according to court documents.

Her 67-year-old husband, Alan, was sitting in a chair with a sword protruding from his stomach.

And her 26-year-old son, Eli, was standing beside him.

"Don't worry, mom. It's a fake sword," Eli Goodrich said, according to a criminal complaint. "It collapses."

He then pulled the sword from his father's stomach, the complaint said.

And June Goodrich noticed it was covered in blood.

The stabbing, which allegedly occurred after 4 p.m. Tuesday in the family's Middletown Township home, left Alan Goodrich dead and Eli Goodrich in jail, authorities said.

Eli Goodrich was charged with murder and was being held without bail, according to court documents. Police said he admitted killing his father.

Alan Goodrich was pronounced dead at St. Mary's Medical Center at 5:31 p.m., according to the complaint.

The killing apparently happened during the son's weekly visit to his parents' house on the 500 block of Trappe Lane, according to the complaint. Eli Goodrich lives in Philadelphia with his fiancee.

During Tuesday's visit, the complaint said, Eli Goodrich told his father, "You're not going to control my mind anymore," and, "I have to kill you."

The source of the dispute was unclear, but the complaint said the younger Goodrich then took the family dog on a walk. When he returned, he went into his mother's bedroom and told her he loved her.

Then he went downstairs, the complaint said, and while his father was watching television, plunged the "long-bladed sword" into his stomach.

Matt Weintraub, Bucks County's chief of prosecution, would not say where investigators believed the sword came from. But he did confirm that Alan Goodrich was in the antiques business and that a website for Goodrich Antiques & Folk Art says the company was run out of Goodrich's home.

June Goodrich called 911, the complaint said, and her son was taken into custody without incident.

Eli Goodrich was charged with homicide and possessing an instrument of crime, according to court documents, and was being held in Bucks County prison without bail.
Collapsible swords are not for stabbing people. They collapse for easy transportation...so you can practice anywhere.

    more than 3,500 “bladed instruments”

Is that a crime? Well, trying to stab a deputy is. I stab the sheriff. I did not stab the deputy.

Cops arrest woman at home filled with 3,500 knives, swords
By Associated Press September 16 at 10:58 PM

BROOKSVILLE, Fla. — Authorities have arrested a Florida woman who they say tried to stab a deputy with a large sword or machete inside a mobile home filled with thousands of knives, swords and bladed instruments.

The Hernando County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release that deputies went to Nickole Dykema’s home Tuesday night to assist probation and parole officers who were trying to issue felony arrest warrants. Authorities say they fired several bean bag rounds at her after she tried to stab the deputy and refused to surrender.

Authorities said she later armed herself with several weapons and advanced toward deputies. She was arrested nearly five hours later after authorities struck her with a stun gun.

Dykema faces multiple charges. Deputies said they had removed more than 3,500 “bladed instruments” from the home.

Two arrested after Providence fight video featuring samurai sword goes viral

The man in the background, identified as David Thomas, holds a samurai sword while an unidentified woman confronts a man during an argument that escalated into a fight.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. — A daytime street brawl in Elmwood started by a couple with a samurai sword went viral on social media — and prompted the arrests of two men.

The 3-minute, 22-second, video starts with 45-year-old David Thomas carrying a samurai sword and threatening violence, as a woman with him yells at a man about working on cars outside her apartment on Balcom Street. Thomas slaps himself in the head several times, as if gearing up for a fight, ignoring an older woman trying to calm them down.

"You're messing with the wrong dawg," Thomas says, and flashes a hand sign. "Cranston Street. Cranston Street King."

The fight starts, and children wail and scream. The video ends with Thomas lying sprawled and motionless in the street, the sword gone, as the man filming him points: "Yo, dawg, you got knocked the [expletive] out!"

No one called the police about the fight last week. Instead, the police learned about it along with anyone else who viewed the video after it was posted last Friday on the popular website World Star Hip Hop, where it went viral. The video had nearly 781,000 views by Thursday afternoon.

Maj. David Lapatin said that police identified Thomas as the man with the sword and Luis Ruiz, 30, from Jillson Street, in Washington Park, as the man who kicked Thomas while he was down. Both were charged with disorderly conduct; Thomas told police he didn't have a complaint, Lapatin said.

Thomas was arraigned Sunday and released with a no-contact order. Ruiz was arraigned Tuesday at District Court, where he pleaded no contest, and his case was filed.

No one else has been identified in the video, nor is it clear whether anyone was notified about the children heard shrieking and screaming "Mommy!" during the fight. Family Service of Rhode Island, which frequently responds to calls with police, was not notified.

No one appears to notice the children watching on the porch. Instead, several men are seen using cell phones and filming Thomas after he was knocked down. "That's what youse [expletive] get," one man says.

    Slighty OT

This is a GREAT DAY for Samurai Wannabes.

Samurai Studio: Tokyo’s new photo studio where you can get your picture taken in samurai armor
    Casey Baseel

Even in the modern era, you’ll find plenty of occasions in Japan to dress up in kimono, such as for festivals, fireworks exhibitions, or other special events (and considering how relatively easy it is to do, it’s something you really should try at least once). But as much as Japan may love its traditions and history, there aren’t too many occasions when you get to strap on a set of samurai armor, so when life gives you the opportunity to do so, like at this new photo studio in Tokyo, you won’t want to let it pass you by.

Sure, you could head all the way down to Oshima Island in the Inland Sea to try on some samurai armor, but if you find yourself closer to Japan’s capital (like most of the people who live in or travel to the country), on October 27 the Samurai Studio will be opening in Tokyo’s historical Asakusa district. Don’t let the fact that the date is close to Halloween fool you, either. These aren’t cheap store-bought getups, but painstakingly crafted sets of armor, including some used in the samurai dramas produced by Japanese TV broadcaster NHK.

Among the armor you can choose from are sets demonstrative of the Sengoku and Edo periods, as well as ones modeled after the personal protection of famous samurai Sanada Yukimura and Naoe Kanetsugu.

And since women are a driving force behind a renewed interest in samurai history, Samurai Studio is also happy to accommodate armor-loving ladies as well as men.

But just like Japan’s feudal period eventually came to an end, so too is the Samurai Studio open for a limited time only, and your last chance to have your picture taken there will be November 5. Photo packages start at a reasonable 4,900 yen (US$41), and reservations can be made in English here. Honestly, the whole thing looks so cool that we’re thinking of mobilizing one of our RocketNews24 brigades for a little photo shoot of our own…

A two-fer! This is a SUPER GREAT DAY for Samurai Wannabes.

Chop up paperwork with katana scissors inspired by the swords of Oda Nobunaga and other samurai

If you’re anything like us, you spend a more than healthy amount of time day-dreaming about cutting down enemies with a katana. Not that we really have any enemies or even people we’d glare at on the subway. Heck, we’re pretty peaceful, loving folks here at RocketNews24! But that doesn’t change the fact that Japanese swords are just freaking awesome.

Still, there’s not much cause to walk around with a sword strapped to your hip these days. Fortunately, Nikken Cutlery has found the perfect compromise: scissors inspired by the swords of Oda Nobunaga and other samurai!

Just because you can’t wear your finest blade to work doesn’t mean you can’t at least add a samurai flair to your office with these katana scissors.

▼ Complete with hamon (tempering line) on the blades!

Nikken Cutlery has three types of katana scissors for your slicing needs, including one inspired by Oda Nobunaga’s sword Heshikiri-hasebe and featuring a gold-tipped “scabbard.”

The scissor blades are made of stainless steel and the handles are covered in lacquered tsukamaki, making for perhaps the prettiest scissors we’ve ever seen! Of course, cutting instruments these gorgeous don’t come cheap, and a pair will put you back 12,000 yen (about US$100), but isn’t that worth it for two stainless blades?! And you have a little time to save up your yen—these scissors won’t be available until October 21.

▼ They’re tiny blades, but blades nonetheless.

▼ The scissors screw also bears Oda Nobunaga’s family crest.

And in case you don’t want to keep your expensive new tools locked up in a wooden box, Nikken Cutlery also offers this stand for another 400 yen (about $3.30).

In addition to the top-billing Oda Nobunaga version, Nikken Cutlery has other samurai-sword-inspired, like these golden dragon scissors. Unfortunately, these haven’t been given a release date or a price yet, but we can’t imagine they’ll be cheap.

▼ They got the name for obvious reasons…

▼ We’re not sure how practical gold handles are, but they look cool!

There’s also a set of colorful katana scissors that are more reasonably priced and available via Amazon Japan for between 1,900 yen ($16) and 2,700 yen ($22.50).

▼ They’re not as flashy, but they’ll work just as well to cut up your bills!

And, best of all, now you have something to pair with your samurai armor bottle covers!

'he’d been acting in self defence and Mr LeBeau must have run into the sword'

'run into the sword' yeah, right.

Man being attacked with Samurai sword was terrified he was about to die, court told

Jamie Orr, 39, had pleaded guilty to causing actual bodily harm, Cardiff Crown Court was told

Jamie Orr was sentenced at Cardiff Crown Court. A police picture of the sword was part of the evidence.

A man being attacked with a Samurai sword was terrified he was about to die, a court heard.

Jonathan LeBeau was lying face down on the floor as the four-foot-long weapon was swung at him.

Prosecutor John Warren told Cardiff Crown Court: “It was being used in a slashing motion towards his face and head.

“He thought his life was over.”

Wielding the weapon, in a flat at Morris Finer Close in Fairwater, Cardiff, was Jamie Orr, 39, a man who had once himself owned the sword which was described by a judge as “fearsome”.

He had given it to a friend who was displaying it on a wall in the flat when Mr LeBeau visited on February 18.

Mr Warren said: “That man had taken it from the wall for his visitor to appreciate its beauty then put it back before Mr Orr suddenly appeared without Mr LeBeau seeing him come in.

The case was heard at Cardiff Crown Court

“He sat between the two men then jumped up, ran to the wall and took it down. The next thing Mr LeBeau recalls is lying on the floor.

“At one stage, the sword hit him on top of the head and he started to bleed.”

Fear stopped him going to his GP until five days later when other lacerations to his arms and abdomen were also noted.

None of them needed medical intervention and were described in court as “surface cuts”.

Arrested, Orr of Cowbridge Road West, Cardiff, at first claimed he’d been acting in self defence and Mr LeBeau must have run into the sword.

But he pleaded guilty to causing actual bodily harm after the prosecution agreed to drop more serious charges involving grievous bodily harm, after the victim refused to given evidence.

Mr Warren said: “He was terrified of reprisals”.

Claire Pickthall for Orr said he’d been suffering “difficulties with his mental health” at the time but a psychiatric report had said no medical intervention was necessary.

She told the court: “There’s a history of long-term alcohol misuse and some substance misuse too.

“He was in a dreadful state earlier this year and it was a relief to him to be remanded in custody where he was in a safe environment, with a routine.”

Jailing him for 16 months, Judge Michael Burr said: “This was an unpleasant incident with a fearsome-looking weapon and a man was injured.

“Fortunately he didn’t need any treatment but that was no thanks to you after the way in which you were wielding it.”

He advised him to get all the help and support he could in the future.
