Seriously, in terms of banning, we've always had a very lax policy here. The reason? It's mostly a numbers game. We're like to keep our numbers up. We are funded by a commercial enterprise, so numbers count.

Also, this is a martial arts forum, so I firmly believe everyone should fight their own battles. It amazes me how many people get offended and ask me to step in - people I respect as martial artists - frankly, if you can't take the heat...

The bulk of the bans are for porn, spam and the occasional legal action. These are all handled as discreetly as possible. After all, discretion is the better part of valor. I generally don't ban people because they are rude or ignorant because I fear that the list of banned people would soon outnumber the members.

I will say this, mostly because lkfmdc is in my face about this: lkfmdc complains the most to me directly via PM and email. lkfmdc, I get about twice as many complaints from you than the entire forum. What is up with that?

Honestly Gene, I've been here for YEARS (how long, I don't even know?). In all that time I've sent you 4 PM"s that I am aware of, maybe a grand total of 6 (maybe 7?? who knows??)... if that makes me the all time number one then we have quite a passive lot here don't we?

That doesn't actually follow logically. Web forums, no matter how much they get pitched and treated as a commons, are still ultimately private spaces with specific owners. If I had a forum and I decided to ban someone because I didn't like what they were saying, that's basically no different from me kicking someone out of my house for the same reason.

Granted, you get into a lot of difficulties in terms of consistency and deciding exactly how heavy-handed or exclusive to be, but it's nothing to do with free or unfree countries.

What is "said" is not solely the problem. What I've seen is that thoughtful posts and thoughtful discussions end up falling off track into personal attacks/exchanges. It's difficult to keep a sincere/serious thread question on track - on track so it can be discussed to its conclusion - before being hijacked.

You PMed and emailed me about Hardwork just prior to launching your hardwork thread. That counts as two within the last month. Now I'm sure there's been more than two more. In that same time, I received only one legal action, which was attended to promptly. I also received two indirect complaints via our moderators, who were just sharing what was going on. Both of those situations seem to be contained.

But more to the point, we (the members of the forum here) are a pretty passive lot when it comes to complaints. When encountering trollish confrontations, most people just click on their ignore function or leave for a spell.

That comment is very ironic coming from a "man" who instigated a character assassination exercise where he doctored my posts to make me come out as a Nazi, anti-semetic and a criminal. Others who participated in this were Sanjuro ronin and cjurakpt, now posting as Taai Gihk Yahn.

When that charade crumbled around his fat ears he went on to fabricate quotes on my sifu's behalf stating that I had 2 years of kung fu experience and had been thrown out of my school. All feeble attempts at character assassination!
