Really. Nipple rings were the thing back in the day. Here's some pictures on, uh, armor. For some reason the Museo Orientale, Venice has a lot of them. Even a breastplate with Fudo the Immovable had at least one of them for some reason! It would be interesting to hear any theories of what these were for...
I've just never heard them called that.
I've heard sai hai no kan, which refers to tassels that indicated rank that were hung on them.
When you mentioned the Museo Orientale, at first I thought you were refering to the Museo Stibbert in Florence, but I was surprised to find the Museum of Oriental Art in Venice. I must get back to Italy...
