Fight clubs are not a new thing. They have been around forever I think. When I was young there was one just a few doors down from where I lived. Mostly young black men and some Asians. Most would be minor aged. They could make $25 just to fight and another $10 if they won. If you got beaten more than a couple of times they would not let you come back. Mostly just fist fighting and wrestling, and those with real fighting skills really mopped up. My father loved to drink and gamble there and when there would be fights he would bet. He would have my older brothers, Jim and Man fight sometimes. They are short like myself, but robust and powerful of strength. They would put them up with a very large person, usually a large black man. White's were not allowed in. The odds would go with the larger man, but Jim or Man would always win, making him a lot of money usually. That did not last long as people got wise to that. There were Reginald and Percy Fung, Raymond Chin and a few others that people really paid to see fight. They were brutal. Then again, some of the black guys were pretty tough and mean too.

Cranford Day Care Workers Accused Of Getting Kids To Fight Plead Not Guilty

ELIZABETH, N.J. (CBSNewYork) — Two former employees of a New Jersey day care center accused of staging a “fight club” among boys and girls pleaded not guilty Friday.

Erica Kenny, 22, of Cranford, and Chanese White, 28, of Roselle are accused of encouraging children, ages 4 to 6, to fight each other on the playground of the Lightbridge Academy in Cranford last month.

Kenny allegedly took video and shared it with friends on the SnapChat app, prosecutors said. Kenny can be heard referring to the movie “Fight Club” as the kids hit each other, prosecutors said.

“Essentially the day care workers are encouraging it and videotaping it,” Union County Prosecutor Grace Park said.

The videos show about a dozen boys and girls shoving each other to the ground and trying to hit each other, according to prosecutors. The charges stem from Aug. 13, but investigators are looking into whether the fights were ongoing.

The SnapChat videos only last 10 seconds and then disappear, but investigators were able to find the video after someone recorded it.

The two women have been fired.

“As parents and caregivers, we are shocked and saddened by this isolated incident and we have assisted the prosecutor’s office from the start of its investigation into this matter,” Lightbridge Academy said in a statement. “While no children were physically harmed during this incident, we have a zero tolerance policy for anyone who acts in conflict with the core value of Lightbridge Academy – the safety and well-being of children.”

Kenny and White are accused of child abuse. Kenny also faces charges of endangering the welfare of a child.

White faces up to 18 months in prison. Kenny could get up to five years.

Those who know the two are stunned by the charges.

“I don’t even know what they were thinking…and to do it more than once,” said Doug McGowan, whose wife used to work with the women.

Both women are due back in court on Oct. 15. If convicted, they both face a maximum sentence of three to five years in prison.

Virginia teacher Sarah Jordan was found guilty of abusing toddlers in the "Monkey Room" of her day care center.

MANASSAS, Va. — A Virginia day care teacher who turned her classroom into what a prosecutor called a "baby fight club" has been convicted on more than a dozen criminal charges.

A Prince William County judge Wednesday convicted 31-year-old Sarah Jordan of Woodbridge on 13 felony and misdemeanor counts, including child cruelty, and assault and battery. She was found not guilty on four counts.

Jordan was the lead teacher in a Minnieland Academy class of 16-month to 2-year-old toddlers dubbed "The Monkey Room" in Woodbridge.

Witnesses testified that Jordan intentionally tripped children, encouraged them to fight each other and sprayed them in the face with a hose.

Jordan testified Wednesday in her own defense and denied the accusations. She said she occasionally used the hose to sprinkle kids with water but never tried to hurt them.

The allegations against Jordan were raised in a September 2013 report by the Virginia Department of Social Service after a coworker called child protective services. The report accused Jordan and fellow Minnieland Academy teacher Kierra Spriggs of abusing the children for their own amusement over six months.

Among the accusations:

The pair initiated fights between the toddlers and tried to get them to bite each other.

Kids fearful of water would be dunked into wading pools.

Jordan and Spriggs would feed the kids Flamin' Hot Cheetos.

The coworker, Desiree Edwards, testified Monday she saw Jordan intentionally trip a running child and then laugh. In another "Monkey Room" incident, Jordan dumped water on a little girl's head, making her cry, Edwards said.

The abuse caused profound behavioral changes in some of the children, according to NBC Washington. Parents said their children — once happy little kids — became aggressive, exhibited a fear of water or even stopped talking altogether.

Some refused to bathe, according to their parents, and most cried when they were dropped off at the center.

One dad, Adam Smith, testified that his daughter "completely stopped talking" once she was in Jordan's care.

"She would stomp her mom's feet. She would run in and slap us for no apparent reason and start giggling," Smith told NBC Washington.

MONTVILLE -- Connecticut State Police said a former substitute teacher at Montville High School was arrested Thursday after being accused of overseeing what State Police are calling "fight clubs" in the classroom.

“I didn’t know what it’s happening at the time,” said Ryan Fish. “I didn’t know…I didn’t have a training to see what was going on.”

State police believe otherwise.

Instead of supervising students studying, they accuse the 23-year-old former substitute teacher of encouraging students in his class to fight while other students looked on.

Fish was arraigned in Norwich Superior Court Thursday.

“He’s not a certified teacher,” said Montville Resident State Trooper Sargent Mark Juhola. “And it bothers me that so many teachers work so hard to get where they are and to help 70 students that this wasn’t a teacher but he was in that role.”
Juhola said Fish oversaw at least three scheduled fights last October involving five male students ages 14 to 16 .

Montville police began investigating after an injured student told a social worker he’d been beaten and robbed at school.

Police said cellphone video shows fish encouraging moving items out of the way so the students could continue fighting and standing around as the violence ensued.

Fish denies it.

(Did you ever facilitate any of the fights?) No. (Did you ever know they were going to happen before they started?) No.”

The police report tells a different story.

After being confronted about the fighting on October 10th, 2017, police said fish told the principal, quote, “boys will be boys.”

Fish was fired by Montville Public Schools Superintendent Brian Levesque later that day.

But Sgt. Juhola said school officials never contacted police and only acknowledged the incident during the police investigation.

“Anytime a student is put in any type of, any type of injurious situation they need to contact the police department,” Juhola said.

Looking back, fish admits he was wrong.

“I am so sorry...To be perfectly honest I was just trying to reach the kids. I thought these kids were just being rambunctious I just thought they needed and out.

Students also told police fish allowed them to draw lewd photos of him engaged in sex acts, encouraged them to connect with them on social media and admitted to them that he did drugs.

Fish was released on a Promise to Appear and is due back in court on May 8th.

Fox 61 News has reached out to the Superintendent’s office but has not heard back.

Seven employees of a nursing home for elderly people were arrested by the FBI this morning in Charlottesville, Virginia, for forcing the elders under their care to fight each other.

According to investigators, the 124 residents of the Retirement Village were forced to fight each other in order to obtain basic things such as food and medical treatments.

The fights were filmed and relayed online on a specialized website, where they often attracted several thousand viewers and astounding amounts of money in bets.

FBI spokesman, Bill Donovan, says the most popular fights were the ones in which contenders were “armed” with canes or walkers.

“The older and more handicapped the fighters were, the larger was the crowd the fight attracted. Some were so weak they used mobility scooters to try and roll on each other.”

Officer Donovan says the staff used several different methods to force the residents to fight, either by through rewards or punishment.

“The nursing home’s staff forced the elders to beat each other up very badly, offering ridiculous rewards such as Jell-O or extra mashed potatoes. Some residents who refused to fight had their dentures or glasses confiscated until they complied.”

According to the FBI, the organizers of this illegal combat ring may have pocketed over $125 million over the 3 years it was in operation, mostly from online bets.

The FBI confirmed it has seized a lot of computer hardware in the Retirement Village as well as several other pieces of evidence like video cameras blood-covered walkers.

The two owners of the retirement home and five other employees were arrested for the role they played in the organization.

The five employees each face numerous criminal charges and could face sentences going from 45 to 85 years in jail if found guilty on all charges.

The owners of the retirement home, Terence and Michelle Aniston, respectively face 37 and 31 accusations and could face over 300 years in prison.

Their trial is expected to begin at the end of June and should draw a lot of media attention.

The N.C. Department of Health and Human Services has barred a Winston-Salem assisted living facility from admitting new residents after finding multiple patient care “deficiencies.”

In June, police received a report of abuse at the Danby House assisted-living and memory-care facility on Burke Mill Road. The police department’s Criminal Investigations Division and the N.C. Department of Health and Human Services began investigating, and determined employees at Danby House were allowing the residents to fight one another, and encouraging them to do so, police said. At least one employee assaulted one of the residents by shoving them, police said.

On Friday, Winston-Salem police announced three former Danby House employees are facing charges of assaulting disabled persons stemming from the June complaints.

On Oct. 2, police arrested Taneshia Deshawn Jordan, 26, of Clemson Circle, on a charge of assaulting an individual with a disability. A magistrate gave Jordan a $1,500 unsecured bond.

On Oct. 3, police arrested Tonacia Yvonne Tyson, 20, of Cedar Ridge Circle, on a charge of assaulting an individual with a disability. Tyson was released from custody on a written promise to appear in court.

On Oct. 10, police arrested Marilyn Latish McKey, 32, of Underwood Avenue, on two counts of assaulting an individual with a disability. A magistrate gave McKey a $1,000 unsecured bond.

According to arrest warrants, the three women are accused of assaulting two female residents. Arrest warrants allege that Jordan witnessed a co-worker assault one female resident and failed to stop the assault or report it. She is also accused of video-taping a fight between two female residents and encouraging the fight. Tyson is also accused of video-taping a co-worker assaulting a female resident and failing to either report the assault or stop it. She is also accused of witnessing a fight between two female residents and doing nothing about it, arrest warrants said.

McKey, whose first name is Marilyn in arrest warrants, is accused of recording an incident in which she pushed a female resident into a room. And she is accused of not doing anything about a fight between two female residents. The arrest warrants said all of these alleged incidents happened on June 19.

A spokesperson for Danby House said the three women were terminated in June when Danby House administration was first made aware of the allegations. A July 26 document from the NCDHHS — a Statement of Deficiencies — shows multiple issues with patient care at Danby House.

On Aug. 21, NCDHHS officials sent two letters to Charles E. Trefzger Jr., executive officer of Danby House, LLC, detailing the violations and ordering Danby House to stop accepting new residents, effective immediately, until conditions merited the suspension be lifted.

A spokesperson for NCDHHS said the suspension is still in place as of Oct. 11.

According to the statement of deficiencies, employees at Danby House were not properly trained or never underwent training, failed to administer medications to residents as prescribed by a doctor and found evidence that employees allowed, and in some cases, encouraged the residents to fight. The employees videotaped some of the fights because they didn’t like one of the residents involved.

In a statement provided by Danby House’s parent company, Affinity Living, LLC, the group said it has a zero tolerance policy for mistreatment.

“Danby House has a zero-tolerance policy for the mistreatment of those in our care and as such, McKey, Tyson, and Jordan were terminated immediately in June when community management was alerted to this situation," the statement said. "Administrators have been working closely with the Winston-Salem Police Department throughout its investigation to ensure justice is served. Additional staff training and a more rigorous vetting process for all new and existing employees at Danby House has been implemented.

Danby House has undergone leadership changes in recent months, and we look at situations like these as opportunities to improve upon the high standard of care we provide for our residents.”

‘Punch her in the face’

According to documents from the N.C. Department of Health and Human Services, a staff member filmed as two women with dementia fought each other in one of their rooms. The women, identified in the documents as Resident 8 and Resident 9, fought in Resident 8’s room as three Danby House employees — who police identified as McKey, Tyson and Jordan — watched the fight and yelled encouragements at one of the women.

During the fight, the women fell on the bed, and Resident 9 continued to hit Resident 8 after the fall, according to the documents. In the video, Resident 8 is heard yelling “let go, help me, help me, let go,” while the staff continues to watch, according to the documents. At some point, one staff member tells Resident 8 to “stop screaming, (expletive),” according to the documents.

Resident 9 continued to hit Resident 8, and then began choking her. While Resident 9 choked her, a staff member is heard telling Resident 9 to “punch her in the face,” according to the documents. Another staff member asks to make sure someone is filming the fight, and asks if the staff member filming the fight will send the video to her.

Resident 8 tried to push Resident 9 off of her, the document says, but could not, and then attempted to bite Resident 9 while still being strangled.

Neither McKey, Tyson nor Jordan intervened at this point, but one of them said “you’re making her turn red” about Resident 9 strangling Resident 8. One of them yelled for their supervisor to come into the room. Eventually the two residents got off the bed and Resident 8 tried to push Resident 9 out of the room, but the staff told her “Don’t you push her.”

When the supervisor came in the room, she was smiling and didn’t ask about the fight and instead told Resident 8 to “stop” and that she better sit down and “go to bed,” according to the document.

Both Resident 8 and Resident 9 were in Danby House’s “Special Care Unit” because of their dementia, according to NCDHHS documents, and both women are described as being disoriented. Family members of both residents were contacted by Danby House’s corporate offices and the Winston-Salem Police Department about the incident.

A separate incident involved Resident 8 and another resident, identified in the document as Resident 10. On a separate occasion, Resident 8 pushed Resident 10 to the ground, according to the document. Tyson, McKey and Jordan were present for that incident, and one of them, identified in the document as “Staff A” yelled at Resident 8, shoved her forcefully into the room, shut off the lights and told her to go to sleep, according to the documents. The three women left Resident 10 on the floor until after Resident 8 had been pushed into her room. The documents don't specify which of the three shoved the resident.

Staff members did not like Resident 8, with one of Tyson, McKey or Jordan telling police that Resident 8 was a “pain the butt,” and that’s why they recorded the videos, according to the NCDHHS documents.

Missed medications

Also in the July 26 NCDHHS Statement of Deficiencies is documentation that employees at Danby House routinely failed to administer prescribed medications to residents, and that facility employees failed to audit and review patient charts as is required by NCDHHS.

Of seven residents who had their records reviewed, six of them did not receive prescribed medications. Residents didn’t receive medications used to treat fluid build up, thyroid hormone deficiencies, neuropathic pain, depression, high blood pressure, Alzheimer’s disease and dementia.

One resident diagnosed with schizoaffective bipolar disorder was supposed to receive medication for fluid twice a day, but for at least two months only received the medication once a day. At one point, during the month of June, the resident didn’t receive the medication for 17 days, according to NCDHHS documents.

When interviewed by the NCDHHS on July 26, an unnamed medication aide at Danby House said she “never noticed” the special instructions that the medication should be given twice a day. The resident did not suffer any adverse health effects due to the lack of medication, according to the NCDHHS documents.

Another resident, who had a history of hypertension and kidney failure, did not always receive their blood pressure medications, according to NCDHHS documents. Blood pressure medications were not appropriately administered for an additional resident who had a history of multiple strokes and hypertension.

“This failure placed the residents at risk due to medication mismanagement and was detrimental to the health safety and welfare of the residents... “ reads one of the NCDHHS documents.

Lack of training

In the same Statement of Deficiencies documents, the NCDHHS found that several staff members never completed required training.

Some staff members tasked with checking blood sugars and giving insulin injections had not completed the required “infection control training.”

Other staff members weren’t properly trained in how to administer certain medications, according to NCDHHS documents. Some staff had never completed general training requirements after being hired.
