    Double Gan's (Bian)?

Does anyone know where to purchase the hard metal double Gan's at?

Or do you have to buy them individually now, I'm having a hard time finding any...

    Thanks a lot,

    If you're into hard whips...

...you must pick up our latest issue. Our 2009 September/October is on the newsstands now and the featured weapon is a spectacular Dragon headed hard whip from the collection of David Fannin. Check it out.

    Laoshi,

Thanks. Lol actually the last two months I've been trying to find them with no real success believe it or not, thanks for your links. I can use either the Gan or Bian, so I will check into them.

Awesome Gene! Actually I let my subscription lapse unfortunately but I will definitely pick up one on the newsstand.

    I did see that picture.
But it is not the same type of whip as advertised in the above links.

I wish I could get a modern reproduction of that type of whip(that wasn't hundreds of dollars)

Halfway down this article is a Qing Dynasty drawing of a man ready to strike with his pair of whips.
You can see that the whips are much longer than the ones advertised above.

Here is a picture of Weituo with the whip. In this case it is called vajra. This is from the wood carved lattice work of a temple in Tainan, Taiwan (where I lived for many years, hence my name).

There is an article here about Weituo and his vajra which includes two statues and a painting of the weapon that I would like to have.

Here is another picture of gaurdians of the gate from a temple in Tainan city.

One thing that I find odd, most temples include massive and frightening dieties and guards that are either painted, carved or statues, yet this weapon is not easy to find.

It is not as if it is not a popular weapon, there are forms for this weapon, including two person forms, though we usually have to use a short stick.

They are hard to find because there's no market for them

Hard whip is rarely practiced anymore. It's a shame really, because when it comes to Chinese weapons, the hard whip is really just a heavy baton, so you'd think the techniques would be easy to transfer to any sort of stick. But it's very rare. I've only seen it demonstrated a handful of times (and I'm always fascinated when I do see it). Of course, I was an instructor for Wing Lam, so I saw his gen form (I think I even wrote the script for his video on gen).

We started carrying our hard whip after CTHD came out. There's a nice scene in there where one is used. We sold a few back then. It's not a big seller now and we may discontinue it at some point. At 5.2 lbs, it's a freaking wrist-breaker.

    Good luck on finding something.

It’s a shame you don’t see the hard whip any more, its one of the more practical traditional weapons

    Hi Gene,

Please don"t discontinue them til next year. I want to buy a couple, but I have to save some money to send my wife and little daughter to the Philippines to visit her family first.

Thanks, I know you'll do it JUST for me!!

    1930's Whip Picture

Here is a picture of a whip from the 1930's era book Tiger Tail Whip.

This is a good representation of the size of the whip.
