Hi, Dr. Yang's seminar in Santa Cruz was a great success.

When he first came to the USA from Taiwan, Dr Yang started teaching in Houston, from 1974 - 1978. He hasn't been back there in a long time.

His first student, and then disciple, Mr Jeffrey Bolt, opened the first YMAA branch school, eventually becoming a master in his own right. In 1974, Dr. Yang came to the United States to study Mechanical Engineering at Purdue University. At the request of a few students, Dr. Yang began to teach Kung Fu, which resulted in the foundation of the Purdue University Chinese Kung Fu Research Club in the spring of 1975. While at Purdue, Dr. Yang also taught college-credited courses in Taijiquan.

In 1986, Mr Bolt held the first national all-Chinese martial arts tournament.
He is President of the United States Wushu Kung Fu Federation and National Chairman for its competitions. He has been active in many organizations and has been the guiding spirit behind cooperative efforts in the U.S. to organize Chinese martial arts for the betterment of the art and for the benefit of its practitioners.

Sifu Bolt has chaired the U.S. National Chinese Martial Arts Competitions and been Team Leader and Fighting Coach for U.S. teams in two world wushu tournaments. He has also promoted, organized, and judged at numerous tournaments at all levels and was Chairman of the 1995 World Wushu Championships, the international Wushu Federation's event in Baltimore, Maryland.

Maybe he'll make it back to Houston one day...

You need to get some of your timeline and info correct.

“When he first came to the USA from Taiwan, Dr Yang started teaching in Houston, from 1974 - 1978. He hasn't been back there in a long time.”

Yang first came to the US to attend Purdue. After graduation with his PhD in Mechanical Engineering, he took a position in Houston. He taught in Houston until 1982.

“His first student, and then disciple, Mr Jeffrey Bolt, opened the first YMAA branch school, eventually becoming a master in his own right. “

Not exactly true. Jeff did not OPEN the school. Yang opened the school. He was then laid off from his engineering job. Yang’s search for a new job took him to Boston. When he left Houston, Yang turned the rental space and the school over to Jeff to continue – which he did.

Jeff Bolt was the first to organize a Chinese Martial Art only competition. I was the technical coordinator for most of them and I can tell you they were successful – and a whole lot of hard work – and many days without sleep while they were going on. He was instrumental in the creation of the US Chinese Martial Arts Council. In 1993, if memory serves, the USCMAC merged with NACMAF to become the USAWKF (United States Wushu Kung Fu Federation). With its inception, there were two people under consideration for the head position, Jeff Bolt and Anthony Goh. This never really came to a vote since Jeff made it clear he did not want the position of President. So, the USAWKF was formed with Anthony Goh as the President and Jeff Bolt as the Vice-President.

In 1999, there were some issues that led to a split in the USAWKF. One faction still exists today as the USAWKF with Goh at the head. The larger group of the USAWKF Board that broke off elected Jeff Bolt to be the head.

Jeff is currently working for a multi-national engineering company and on assignment in Saudi Arabia. He was recently back in Houston for a short visit and met with many of his long time friends and students.

Still, I would like to attend a workshop by Dr. Yang if he could give one here in Houston. I have watched some of the videos of his workshops that David has posted here, he does a great job of explaining the basics....
