At first I sort of laughed at your analogy, but then I got to think about it, I know people that gave up jobs, moved houses wrecked relationships etc to be near and train with their master. Who happily spend thousands on pounds on grading and special courses, buy clothes etc to look like there master and move like them… some even take to talking like them. They start to believe they are almost a mystical being have all the answers and that they can do no wrong. When you look at it like that their is no difference between the two... which is very sad

The cult mentality has degrees of severity, but it doesn't change what it is at its core.
    Psalms 144:1
Praise be my Lord my Rock,
He trains my hands for war, my fingers for battle !

No, I should look at what people do in the cult everyday, accept it, and be a part of it. Did I say cult? I meant society. Everything that we do is, cultish.

that's great. I have had experience with breaking up cults since college, where myself and another student put the kabosh on a guy who was "teaching meditation," and really doing hypnotic inductions. He had amassed quite a group.
I have seen and have had experience first hand with many many cults and cult-like teachers. (Funny how many of them are MAists. Unfortunately, students will always put their teacher on a pedestal. It is the deranged person who then takes advantage of that.)
From premmies (devotees of Guru Maharaj-ji -if you're old enough to remember him, the sixteen yr-old guru), to Moonies, Religious fundamentalist churches, Jews for Jesus, Messianic Jews, Buddhist cults-(namyo ho renge kyo) Wiccan cults, Kabballa Learning Center, Dianetics/Scientology (funny thing-I read the book, found it interesting and walked into a Dianetics place when I was 18. After listening to the interviewer, I immediately caught onto the fact that it was a cult, said thanks but no-thanks and walked out. I find it funny how others don't see right through them) LGATS-(Personal Dynamics-which I actually enjoyed thoroughly, but knew how to get the tools I needed and leave it alone-I still reccommend it but you need to have your wits about you), MLMs, Psi cults, Neotech, and others.
I think that is great work you're doing, and keep it up.

What about Baptists, Methodists, Presbyterians, and the rest, Dragon gate Taoists, Shintoists, Hindus, and the rest? What about America, China, Russia, Sri Lanka, and the rest? What about you and yours mine and mine? What about the company you work for? The union that you are in? The side of the street that you walk on? The tv shows that you watch? The tv shows that I don't watch? The everything that is a part of your life besides yourself? It's all kind of cultish isn't it?

My undergraduate thesis was on Soke Gakkai which is the parent organization of Nichiren Buddhism. Seems they chant for magical means versus enlightenment.

    Their chant:
    Namu Myo Ho Renge Kyo
    All Hail the Lotus Sutra
Mouth Boxers have not the testicular nor the spinal fortitude to be known.
Hence they hide rather than be known as adults.

Our father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, they kingdom come...

Maybe magical means is their enlightenment...

I did a lot of work with my boss to try to get him out of his funk. Seems he still thinks that he is hot ****e and deserves to get paid what he does, all the while eating at Taco Bell and getting mad at them for bad order jobs and being dopies. Double standards.

It's funny-My friend and I were practicing Hakko-Ryu Jiu-Jutsu together, and we would always frequent this sushi bar after class. We got to be pretty good friends with the owner, and one day asked him if he knew anything about Zen Buddhism. He invited us to his house, where he had shrine built and participate in Gohonzon.

Well, after the sitting in seiza and chanting, they explained how they believed that by simply chanting nomu myu ho renge kyo, all your worries will be gone, you will win lotto, cure cancer, have better erections, (ok, maybe I threw that in..) my friend and I looked at each other and were off like a prom dress.
Of course, Ken-san called us every day for weeks after that...

There is also a "Taoist" sect that had a ritual that I was invited to..it was pretty much the same thing. After a free vegetarian meal, The "Master" performs a blessing of sorts, then writes your name on a paper and burns it-thus erasing your name off of the list in hell. (kinda like the Irish blessing-"May you land in heaven an hour before the Devil knows you're dead," I suppose...) and then gives you the secret word that lets you into heaven-sort of a VIP card to get to the front of the line. Cool. I figure that along with my Bar Mitzvah, I was IN. Always good to have your bases covered, I always say.
Of course, they also say that by having this blessing, all your worries will be gone, you will win lotto, cure cancer, and of course better erections.
That is now the first thing I ask them when cults approach me. "What will this do for my sex life? Will it give me better erections?" That usually nips it right in the bud.
Ten years later, they still call me to tell me the Master is visiting, and I should come over...

The Baptists have it covered...You are saved, then no hell...Of course if you are truly saved you won't want to sin...
