FREE New York City Fango screening: DISTRICT 13: ULTIMATUM

    By FANGORIA Staff
FANGORIA will host a free screening of DISTRICT 13: ULTIMATUM, TAKEN producer Luc Besson’s sequel to his smash-hit futuristic action thriller DISTRICT B13, at the Cinema Village (22 East 12th Street, off University Place) tomorrow, Thursday, January 28 at 7 p.m.

Directed by Patrick Alessandrin and written and produced by Besson (THE FIFTH ELEMENT, LA FEMME NIKITA, THE PROFESSIONAL, the TRANSPORTER movies, etc.), DISTRICT 13: ULTIMATUM picks up where the previous film ended. Two years have passed since elite police officer Damien Tomasso (Cyril Raffaelli) teamed up with reformed vigilante Leito (parkour originator David Belle) to save the notorious District 13, a racially charged ghetto populated by violent drug-dealing gangs and vicious killers. Despite government promises to maintain order, the state of the district has deteriorated, and a group of corrupt cops and elected officials are conspiring to cause civil unrest in D13, looking for an excuse to raze the area and cash in on its redevelopment. Now Damian and Leito must join forces again, and use their mastery of martial arts and unique physical skills to bring peace to the neighborhood by any means necessary before a proposed nuclear air strike wipes it off the map.

I watched District 13 Ultimatum on Fios On-Demand yesterday. Action-wise, the film was relatively in keeping with the first one; lots of free-running martial arts styled action within a wildly territorial and somewhat trodden city scape.

If I had to compare completely with the first one, as to which I liked better, I would concede that the first one was a bit better. In District 13 Ultimatum, the various gangs are at times too stereotyped, although one could argue it helped visualize the territorial divsions of the city as a whole and made the storyline easier to converge at the end.

Although there was plenty of action teased with some witty elements, there several 'WTF' scenes. Nothing too off the wall, but, for example, when one of the main characters, Leito, is running away from his chasers and bounding across rooftops, I couldn't help but wonder several times how some of the persuers were able to get in front of him on rooftops from one building to the next?

In any case, it was worth a view for anyone that enjoyed the first one.
