A flight attendant recruitment pageant was held at Qingdao University on January 4 after universities from all over the country recommended candidates to walk around in their swimsuits on stage as models.

Becoming an airline attendant in China is serious business. It's a coveted job which tens of thousands of people compete for, and all are required to be young and good-looking. Many airlines hold pageant-style competitions to recruit new stewardesses.

In 2011, China Southern Airlines, one of the country's largest airlines, held one such pageant and these were the requirements:

•Women must be 25 or younger

•They must be single

•They must be between 5' and 5'9"

•Their legs cannot be "X or O shaped" [???]

•There are also restrictions on their weight-to-height ratio

•No glasses or visible scars

According to the Global Times, many young people end up quitting shortly after getting the job when they realize its demands don't quite live up to the romanticized expectations.

"The job description doesn't tell you that you need to scrub the toilet," Wang Cheng, an administrator at Civil Aviation University of China was quoted as saying. "They only imagine a glamorous picture, traveling around the world, carrying cute suitcases and wearing cute uniforms," said Wang.
