Photos: Qingdao University's flight attendant recruitment pageant

A flight attendant recruitment pageant was held at Qingdao University on January 4 after universities from all over the country recommended candidates to walk around in their swimsuits on stage as models.

Becoming an airline attendant in China is serious business. It's a coveted job which tens of thousands of people compete for, and all are required to be young and good-looking. Many airlines hold pageant-style competitions to recruit new stewardesses.

In 2011, China Southern Airlines, one of the country's largest airlines, held one such pageant and these were the requirements:

•Women must be 25 or younger

    •They must be single

    •They must be between 5' and 5'9"

    •Their legs cannot be "X or O shaped" [???]

•There are also restrictions on their weight-to-height ratio

    •No glasses or visible scars

According to the Global Times, many young people end up quitting shortly after getting the job when they realize its demands don't quite live up to the romanticized expectations.

"The job description doesn't tell you that you need to scrub the toilet," Wang Cheng, an administrator at Civil Aviation University of China was quoted as saying. "They only imagine a glamorous picture, traveling around the world, carrying cute suitcases and wearing cute uniforms," said Wang.

Martial arts black belt Miss Nevada is new Miss USA
    June 9, 2014 1:48pm

Nia Sanchez, 24-year-old 4th degree black belt in taekwondo from Nevada, was crowned Miss USA on Sunday during the 63rd telecast of the annual beauty pageant.

Sanchez, who wore an intricate red gown during the latter part of the three-hour nationally broadcast contest, addressed the issue of sexual assault on college campuses during a question-and-answer session faced by all six finalists.

Sanchez said she felt some colleges, fearing a bad reputation, might sweep the problem under the rug, and that "More awareness [of the issue] is very important so that women can learn to protect themselves."

She added that as a 4th degree black belt, she learned "you need to be confident and be able to defend yourself ... That's something we need to start to implement for a lot of women."

The pageant, co-hosted by Giuliana Rancic of "E! News" and MSNBC's morning news show "Way Too Early" host Thomas Roberts, was broadcast live on NBC from Baton Rouge, Louisiana.

The first runner-up was Audra Mari, 20, from North Dakota. Other finalists included contestants from Georgia, Louisiana and Florida. Iowa's representative became a sixth finalist based on fan voting on Twitter, but placed as the fifth runner-up.

The competition featured contestants from all 50 states and the District of Columbia who were judged in three traditional beauty pageant categories: swimsuit, evening gown and interview.

She was a Disney princess too!

Former HK Disneyland princess becomes Miss USA 2014!

24-year-old former Hong Kong Disneyland princess Nia Sanchez beat out other competitors from 50 US states to take home the Miss USA crown with her, fulfilling her own Disney fairytale ending.

Sanchez's saga began when came to Hong Kong and worked as a variety of famous characters at Hong Kong Disneyland for seven months. including Snow White, Cinderella and Belle. Referring the period of her “princess” career, she described it as one of the best moments in her life. “I have been to the Disneyland in California for several times. Yet, the culture in Hong Kong Disneyland is completely different,” she said.

During her time in Hong Kong, the beautiful princess enjoyed uploading photos of herself sight-seeing at different landmarks in Hong Kong, such as the Big Buddha on Lantau Island and the Golden Fish Street in Mongkok.

Aside from her beauty, Sanchez also showed the power and wisdom of women in the pageant (something not often associated with such competitions). While answering the judge’s question about what should be done towards the high rate of sexual assaults on US college campuses. Sanchez, the fourth-degree black belt in taekwondo said confidently that women should take the responsibility themselves and know how to defend themselves.

When she was young, there was a period which Sanchez stayed in the women’s shelter with her mother after her parents’ divorce. With this personal experience, she has volunteered at women’s shelters regularly in her adulthood to teach women and children how to defend themselves.

“Disney Parks- the place where dreams come true”. The brown-eyed girl felt excited with this new title and was proud to bring the first Miss USA title back to Nevada. “It’s a dream come true,” she said.

Sanchez will then go to represent the US in the Miss Universe competition.
Who do I contact to interview her? Donald Trump? Oh bother...

I question the integrity of any school or system that makes it even remotely possible for an early twenty something year old to have a fourth degree black belt. WTF? That's crazy sauce.

And then there was Miss Great Lakes Erin Jenkinson in the Miss Michigan competition..

You guys realize this is a beauty pageant we're talking about, right? You were expecting some intellectual discussion? It's run by Trump.

Personally, I love this stuff, if just for quotes like "Martial arts and techno, the new peanut butter and jelly" alone.

Miss Michigan 2014: Martial arts, dance highlight talent competition on opening night of preliminaries

Erin Jenkinson, Miss Great Lakes breaks boards during her martial arts performance as she competes in the talent competition during the opening night of the Miss Michigan Scholarship Pageant competition on June 12, 2014. A total of 34 contestants began competition for the title of Miss Michigan at the Frauenthal Center for the Performing Arts in Muskegon. The pageant concludes on Saturday.

MUSKEGON, MI – "It's the most exciting part of the Miss Michigan competition."

Those were the words of Mistress of Ceremonies and 2008 Miss Michigan Ashlee Baracy before the talent competition at the 2014 Miss Michigan Scholarship pageant Thursday night.

Half of the 34 contestants performed a variety of talents inside the Frauenthal Center for the Performing Arts on June 12. The other half will perform Friday, June 13.

The contestants are all competing for the statewide title, $10,000 in scholarship money and the chance to compete for the Miss America crown in September in Atlantic City, N.J.

Here are five highlights from the first night of the talent competition:

    1. Opera comes to Muskegon

Many of the contestants entertained the crowd with stirring vocal performances, but two that stood out were both operas. Emily Smith, Miss Greater Kalamazoo, took home the first preliminary talent award, a $500 scholarship for her classical vocal performance of "Convien Partir" by Maria Callas.

Miss Stateline Mallory Rivard also received a large ovation for her rendition of "O Mio Babbino Caro" from the opera "Gianni Schicchi."

    2. "The Flight of the Bumblebee"

Thursday's performances included just one involving a musical instrument, but it was a good one. Performing in a sparkling, golden dress, Miss Greater Grand Rapids Camille Bridges played Rachmaninoff's iconic arrangement "The Flight of the Bumblebee" on the classical piano.

After a small slip-up at the beginning of the performance, Bridges played the remainder of the lightning-fast arrangement flawlessly, for which she received a large ovation from the full theater.

    3. Martial arts and techno, the new peanut butter and jelly

What do you get when you combine martial arts and "Bangarang" by Skrillex? The most unique performance of the night, that's what. Miss Great Lakes Erin Jenkinson showcased a variety of martial arts skills during her high-energy performance.

Jenkinson began the performance flying around the stage, using punches and kicks as dance moves. She then twirled a stick in front of and behind her head several times before emphatically smashing through three sets of wooden boards with her fist.

    4. Disney's "Frozen" popular among the contestants

Influences from Disney's hit 2013 film "Frozen," the story of a princess whose icy powers have inadvertently trapped her kingdom in eternal winter, made several appearances during the first night of competition.

Back-to-back contestants, Miss Tip of the Mitt Charlotte Squires and Miss Capital City Tiffany Rogers, performed songs from the film, singing "Let it Go" and "For the First Time in Forever", respectively.

2013 Miss Michigan Haley Williams also performed an impressive baton routine to "Let it Go" at the end of the night. Williams perfectly executed the routine that helped her win last year's pageant, at times juggling three batons at once. She received a standing ovation following her performance.

    5. Dance like nobody's watching, except everyone is

Dance will be a theme throughout the 2014 Miss Michigan pageant. Fifteen contestants will be performing some sort of dance, more than any other type of performance. Seven of those performances took place on Thursday.

Contestants performed a variety of styles, including contemporary, ballet, Irish step, tap and jazz. Miss SouthCentral Carleigh Rowley impressed with her feisty jazz dance to "It's About the Walk" by Prince.

Miss Lighthouse Coast Allison Adams showed some athleticism by doing a forward flip during in her jazz dance to "Ain't Nothing Wrong With That" by Robert Randolph and the Family Band.

Miss Bay County Katelyn Miujeak (contemporary dance), Miss Jackson Crossroads Quinn Fischman (tap dance), Miss Saginaw County Victoria Lines (Irish step dance), Miss Shoreline Jodi Beckman (tap dance on stairs) and Miss Allegan County Abbie Reed (ballet) also showcased their moves.

Ok, ok. It's a beauty contest. No intelligence, no skills. But she doesn't even look half as good as one of SR's babe posts.

MMA Marine to take the stage in beauty pageant finals

First, she made headlines in 2011 by taking Justin Timberlake to the Marine Corps ball. She did it again when she became a professional mixed martial arts fighter upon leaving the Corps in 2012.

Now, Kelsey DeSantis has her eyes set on winning a beauty pageant.

DeSantis is letting her tough-girl image slide a bit, announcing July 7 via Twitter that she had been selected as a finalist in the Ms. Veteran America competition, a pageant-style contest that aims to highlight “the woman behind the uniform” while raising funds for homeless women veterans.

A veterans advocate who started her own organization, the H.E.L.O. Foundation, to help troops transition into civilian life, DeSantis said she was drawn to the competition by its mission and its commitment to highlighting strong women who served. She signed up to compete earlier this year—and then life threw her a curveball.

“When I committed to Ms. Veteran America, everything was good in my career [as a fighter],” DeSantis said. “Then I found out I’m pregnant.”

DeSantis and her boyfriend Jake are expecting a baby girl in November. Doing the math, DeSantis realized that she’d be almost full-term by the Ms Veteran America final competition. She emailed the organizers explaining her situation and offering to drop out if necessary.

“They wrote me back and said, ‘are you kidding me? this is what we’re all about!’” DeSantis laughed.

For the competition’s regionals near Washington, D.C., DeSantis had to demonstrate a talent; she chose to highlight her fighting skills with a boxing demonstration, showcased in a humorous skit with some assists from a friend and fellow Marine vet.

“We had all the judges laughing,” she said.

At the finals in Leesburg, Va., DeSantis said she’d do another boxing demonstration as well as a panel interview, for which she’d be judged for the content and delivery of her responses. That part would come naturally, she said.

“Ever since I got out, I realized that it’s a part of me to continue a life of service,” she said. “It’s become a part of who I am and what I want to do. I guess I speak form the heart.”

Following the competition, DeSantis said she’s looking forward to entering her life’s next adventure: motherhood.

“My boyfriend Jake really wanted a boy,” she said, of first finding out they were expecting. “I told him, ‘either way, she’s going to be a fighter.’”

I hate to break the martial pageant trend...

..but Miss Tourism is a dirty gal. Very dirty.

Fan service alert!: 'Miss Tourism' contestants get down and dirty at Xiushan Mud Carnival

'Miss Tourism' contestants romp about in tidal mud during a mud carnival on Xiushan Island, Zhejiang, promoting tourism/perving by tourists.

Every year, the mud carnival at the sea mud park (yes, that's the name) attracts around a thousand visitors

Probably the one time it's good to be a duck in China.

Yep, a lot more titillating than your average 'mud run revelers.'

I remember outdoor parties that ended up like that. It's a weird scene when you factor in that 98% of the people crawling around are high as fuck. The next morning was always bitter sweet.
