    Turtle-duck Date Night

This is my piece for the upcoming The Legend of Korra / Avatar: The Last Airbender Tribute Exhibition at Gallery Nucleus, opening this Saturday, March 7th, 6:00pm to 10:00pm. Mike and I will be there doing a signing for the first half of the reception (there are a limited number of spots in the signing line, but I’m not sure how they are working that), and hanging out for the rest. I think there will be a raffle, and plenty of cool stuff to purchase. A bunch of the crew members from the production will be there too (hopefully including some ATLA folks), so it is going to be a fun family reunion for us. I can’t wait to see all of the incredible artwork.

As for this piece, I used and modified Emily Tetri's production painting of Harmony Tower (designed by Lee Jung-Su). Otherwise, I drew and painted the rest of it. I based the turtle-duck boats on the charming swan boats I saw while visiting Ueno Park in Tokyo. Gallery Nucleus will be selling the above artwork as an exclusive print, in a limited edition of 100, to be released on opening night (and I’m pretty sure I’ll be signing them). I will be donating 100% of my share of the proceeds to an LGBTQ suicide prevention hotline.

I hope to see you Saturday! Get there early, as the lines for these Gallery Nucleus openings wrap all the way around a city block. If you can’t make it to the opening, the show will be hanging for two weeks. There is an event being planned for the closing as well. More on that later.

New graphic novel coming in June 2017

First The Legend of Korra graphic novel coming in June 2017
'The Legend of Korra: Turf Wars' graphic novel will pick up where the series left off

The Legend of Korra wrapped up back in 2014, but that doesn’t mean the end of the line for Korra, Asami, and the other heroes of Republic City.

Korra’s predecessor, Avatar: The Last Airbender, has continued its story in graphic novels, and now Korra is poised to do the same with a three-part graphic novel series from Dark Horse called Turf Wars. The first installment is due out June 2017 from series co-creator Michael DiMartino and artist Irene Koh (with feedback from the series’ other co-creator, Bryan Konietzko).

The Legend of Korra famously ended with a romantic pairing between its two female leads. Turf Wars is set to pick up right where the series left off, as Korra and Asami return from the spirit world to find Republic City in disarray. The new spirit portal has caused no end of chaos, as a pompous developer plans to turn it into an amusement park and the triads reunite just in time to cause trouble for the city’s many evacuees.

“Korra has to figure out how to find a new balance in the city with all this stuff that’s gone on,” DiMartino recently told EW. “It’s gonna take place right after the finale, so it’s focusing on Korra and Asami’s relationship as a new threat emerges. It’s kind of like the aftermath dealing with the new portal in the city, and all the evacuees coming back to find their homes wiped out cause of the portal.”
While this is cool, I'm ready for a new avatar cycle.

    Dare I say it?
    Gay.

Can't tell you how many people got turned off with the Korra Asami relationship thing.
The one that surprised me the most was a lesbian couple we know, to paraphrase one of the ladies:
"What? a strong female lead is automatically a butch lesbian ??"

    ttt 4 2018!

    Slightly OT, but it's Korra.

    The Art Of Being “Korra”
    BY CHRISTOPHER EBUKA
    01 JANUARY 2018 | 6:00 PM

Korra Obidi, in entertainment lingua, is a triple threat – dancer, musician and actress. The artist from Delta State started modelling at a very young age, trained in salsa and contemporary ballet and has featured in films like Another Ordinary Day, The Flatmates, Lumba Boys, SARO the Musical. She reveals to having a very sheltered childhood as she says, “I had private tutors, and was never allowed to play with other kids. I think that is why I can’t stop playing as an adult.”

Guardian Life caught up with her, where she talked about her life and career.

You have such a beautiful name; how did the name ‘Korra’ come about?

I play martial arts called Capoeira. Everyone in the Rhoda has a nickname. People compared me to the anime character Korra because I learned fast I could master everything. They called me that all the time and the name just stuck.

Was dancing natural to you or did you have to train specially for it?

It did come naturally, but I had to train getting to the level I wanted to be in.

What do you think needs to be different in the Nigerian dance industry?

Discipline amongst dance artists. Mediocrity is a poison here. But that being said. It is booming! There is change and it is progressing every day. I am grateful to be a part of the movement.

What challenges have you faced as a dancer in Nigeria?

A lot! It’s too much to mention, having to travel to learn a lot, having to wait months to get paid for jobs, there are a lot. But it is changing and I can feel it improving.

How difficult is it to become a dancer in Nigeria?

It is extremely easy compared to other countries. Mentors like Kaffy, Loveth, SPAN myself and a host of others groom young dancers without charge. You don’t have to be attached to a dance company for years before you start getting paid. The industry is welcoming and if you work hard enough, you will be at the top in no time. I am not just a dancer but a musician, model and entertainer and because of this, I can compare qualitatively the dance industry to the other industries, dance is by far the most welcoming.

You’ve been teaching dance professionally. How has that experience been?

Amazing. Connected with a lot of souls. It’s purely amazing.

You travel quite a lot. Where is the one place you’d like to go but haven’t?

I think Odisha in India where the classical dance Odissi is from. Having trained in Odissi for seven years, I would like to see the temples and statues one of these days if I ever find the time.

If you could share a stage with anyone who would it be and why?

Teyana Taylor, Janet Jackson, Shakira, Karina Smirnoff. They make my blood boil with that familiar dance.

Do you have an alter ego during your performances?

I am a crazy wild gypsy at heart most of the time, not your regular. She’s not what society wants or expects from a Nigerian woman. I always unapologetically let myself express her every time.

What advice would you give to a young girl or guy who’s trying to start a dance career?

Find a style and specialise. Train till you are satisfied. Move on to the next style that tickles your passion. Don’t be a lazy, directionless dancer.

    New Avatar series

Exclusive: The next Avatar animated series, featuring the earth Avatar after Aang & Korra, is coming in 2025 from Paramount and Avatar Studios

We have a ***HUGE*** Avatar News exclusive for you today.

    It’s happening.

Avatar Studios is working on the next Avatar after Aang and Korra. An original animated streaming series set in the future after The Legend of Korra, following the next earth Avatar in the cycle, is coming to Paramount+ in 2025.

But there’s more. An animated movie featuring this Avatar and their era is coming to theaters in the years after the show comes out. (I can’t reveal more specific dates yet, but it won’t be an insanely long wait.)

Currently we don’t know how far in the future this Avatar’s era will be set, but a very rough approximation based on previous Avatars is that if it’s set ~100 years after Korra’s time, it will be in the Avatar world’s equivalent of our world’s present day.

2025 is going to be a HUGE launch year for Avatar Studios’ animated universe, with the adult Aang movie coming to theaters on October 10th, 2025, as well as this new series streaming in the same year. This isn’t a mistake on my part, they’re intentionally releasing both in the same year– part of a much bigger plan. Currently it’s implied that the movie is Avatar Studios’ first project of any kind, which would imply that this series would come out after that, at the very end of the year, likely in November or December 2025. There could, of course, be delays, but they’re absolutely working on multiple projects in parallel right now.

This is the second Avatar original streaming series coming soon, with the live-action young Aang series premiering next year in 2023. Season 2 of live-action ATLA can be estimated for two years later in 2025 as well, joining the adult Gaang animated movie and next earth Avatar animated series to form the biggest year of Avatar EVER.

    More news tomorrow.

(Note that the above artwork is an Avatar News mockup for illustrative purposes only, it’s not official and we have no idea what the next Avatar will look like yet.)
