Watch: Harbin art expo's breathtaking 170m-long 'Dream' sculpture



One of the most spectacular sculptures at Harbin's 26th annual International Snow Sculpture Art Expo was created with the help of 100 craftsmen and used 24 thousand cubic-meters of snow. The sculpture, called 'Dream', is 26 meters tall and 170 meters long.



This year's expo spans over 600 thousand square meters and uses 100,000 cubic-meters of snow and ice. The sculptures are all divided into six sections depending on their style, such as castles, mythological figures and sci-fi themes.



Harbin's Sun Island International Snow Sculpture Art Expo is a main attraction at the Ice and Snow Festival and has seen over 2.3 million visitors. The exhibition runs around 60-90 days.

Models at the Sun Island Snow Expo in Harbin, Heilongjiang province walked down the catwalk in none but their swimsuits and knee-high boots while temperatures



A series of activities were held on February 14 to celebrate the coinciding Valentine's Day and Lantern Festival holidays. It's not clear what exactly the young women were modeling, but it's safe to assume they were the most miserable people in attendance.

The Northeastern city of Harbin has cashed in on its rich ice and snow resources to create an annual ice and snow festival. The festival has grown in popularity in recent years, as tourists from both home and abroad flock to the icy city to enjoy some chilly fun.

Tourists come from far and wide, this time of year, to Harbin, the capital city of China's northernmost province Heilongjiang.

Here chilly temperatures only boost the enthusiasm of sightseers and merrymakers, with so many theme parks and activities on offer in the city during this season. The children's fairyland, ice trade expo, ice lantern fair, and the Russian-themed Volga Manor are some of the most popular attractions at the Harbin Ice and Snow Festival.

Decades ago, Harbin was a quiet city during winter. Shops closed early at night, and few streetlamps were on. Locals thought winter was a hard time to endure.

Gradually, people realized the value of the ice and snow, a free resource bestowed by nature. In 1963, a lantern fair opened at the city's Zhaolin park. In 1985, the lantern fair evolved into the first Ice and Snow Festival. In 1999, the first ever Ice and Snow World opened its doors to visitors.

"In its inception, it was tens of thousands of square meters," Harbin Tourism Bureau's deputy director Sun Jiaju said. "Now the area has been enlarged into 800 thousand square meters, making the ice and snow world the largest of its kind in the world."

In 2001, the Harbin Ice and Snow World joined forces with the Heilongjiang International Ski Festival, to become one event under the name of the Harbin International Ice and Snow Festival. It now equals fame with similar events held in Sapporo, Quebec and Oslo.

From the end of every December to the end of Feburary, Harbin is transformed into a winter wonderland, with loads of icy fun on offer. Tourists come for transparent sculptures, skiing, winter swimming, ice fishing, and icy food, like ice-sugar gourd, ice cream and ice hot pot. It seems here you can get an all-around icy experience from head to mouth, to toe.

Promoters in Qingdao have once again resorted to the tried and true tactic of using pretty girls in bikinis to publicize the launch of their latest venture -- even if that venture happens to be a ski slope.



Over the weekend, a gaggle of ladies suited up in swimwear to be one of the first to try out the slopes at a resort that had just opened for the year in the snow-covered mountains around Qingdao, Shandong province.



Apparently, visitors were pleased to see these "frozen beauties" moving carefully and awkwardly across the snow.



While this might seem incredibly exploitative at first, we simply see it as a part of a bikini model's patriotic duty to promote winter sports in the lead up to China hosting the 2022 Winter Olympics in the not as snow-covered hills around Beijing. Gotta get people to care somehow.
