8th China International Shaolin Wushu Festival in Zhengzhou

I was told this was happening very recently by one of the monks who came through the office the other week. I had figured they weren't going to do anything because of the 4th World Traditional Wushu Championships being held in Shiyan City, Hubei Province, China on October 17-20, 2010. Note the date proximity - Shaolin vs. Wu Tang again? . Also note that the U.S. team for the World Traditionals are being sponsored by the Tiger Claw Foundation.

As for the Shaolin Festival, it got combined with the World Traditionals for the first one back in 2004. That's when I did my documentary on it - see Shaolin Trips: The First World Traditional Wushu Festival. They held the second one in 2006 - here's the thread: 2nd World Traditional Wushu Festival. In 2008, they moved it to Wudang, see 3rd World Traditional Wushu Championship.

YANGON, Oct. 6 (Xinhua) -- Myanmar will take part in the forthcoming 8th China International Shaolin Wushu Festival in Zhengzhou, said U Tun Tun Oo, the general secretary of Myanmar Wushu Federation on Wednesday.

About 2,000 wushu practitioners are expected to take part in the Oct.22-28 festival, according to U Tun Tun Oo.

Myanmar's representatives will contest in Taolu and Sanshou categories with three male and female players aged under 18.

Myanmar, which will host the 27th SEA Games in 2013, hopes to use the Shaolin Festival to prepare for the SEA Games.

In the 22nd SEA Game in Vietnam in 2003, Myanmar grabbed five gold medals.

Myanmar Wushu federation had sent 12 players to the Beijing Sports Institute to train.

The Eighth Zhengzhou International Shaolin Wushu Festival will open on Oct. 22 and a welcoming ceremony will be held in Dengfeng on the afternoon of the next day. On the afternoon of Oct. 21, the welcoming ceremony held a rehearsal for the first time with over 60,000 students from Wushu schools performing Shaolin Kung Fu on the way to the Shaolin Temple scenic area.

At the rehearsal, 800 students from the Tagou Wushu School formed the Chinese character, "Tian Di Zhi Zhong" and then "Gong Fu Zhi Du" by standing on ladders as they were accompanied by musical beats. The 720 students in the plaza held colored flags and performed Wushu skills. The Chinese characters composed of their bodies became a major highlight at the ceremony.

At the Shaolin Temple scenic area, more than 8,000 students from the Tagou Wushu School who were dressed in traditional costumes, Buddhist robes and combat clothes performed traditional and unique Shaolin Wushu skills, such as quincuncial piles, the iron palm, changing one's bones and leaping onto roofs as well as vaulting over walls. They demonstrated the broad and profound Shaolin Wushu skills to push the entire rehearsal to the climax.

In front of the Shaolin Temple's entrance, Shi Yongxin, abbot of the Shaolin Temple will lead monks of the temple to the entrance and welcome guests participating in the festival. The guests will follow the abbot to visit the temple after the solemn welcoming ceremony.

According to sources, the organizing committee plans to take the Shaolin Temple, Zhongyue Temple, and the Songyang Academy as the three focuses of the welcoming ceremony. They will use the tourist highway as the main route of the ceremony to fully display the extensive and profound Shaolin Wushu Style as well as the humanity landscapes and mental outlook in the cradle of Shaolin Wushu.

The organizing committee also arranged more than 60,000 students from Wushu schools to perform Shaolin Kung Fu along the nearly 20-kilometer long road from Yingxian Park of Dengfeng to the Shaolin Temple scenic spot. More than 13,000 students from the Tagou Wushu School out of the total 60,000 students were also arranged to perform a large-scale artistic performance at the Yingxiange Square and the Shaolin Temple scenic spot respectively.

The website dahe.cn contributes to this report.

    Always a detractor

    CHINA

Young Chinese Shaolin monks with their bodies painted in gold, perch on a rooftop as they perform for visitors during a kungfu festival at the temple in Dengfeng, central China's Henan province on October 24, 2010. The Shaolin temple -- which makes millions every year from entrance fees, online sales of Shaolin items such as spearheads and its travelling performing troupes -- has attracted controversy in China over charges of rampant commercialism.
Actually we all know they are painted bronze. Nice pic for this dig tho.
