    Chi Sao Competitions Atlantic City

A clip of the intermediate division, first round. I'm not a big fan of Chi Sao competitions, but I felt this was a good example of a smaller person controlling and dominating a person who is twice his size and half his age using his root and structure to his advantage. Mark-my student is in the white shirt.

There is no REAL secrets in Wing Chun, but because the forms are conceptual you have to know how to decipher the information..That's the secret..

why I hate chi sao competition.
Once you train for this you start doing stuff that will never be of use in a real life confrontation

My student Mark did not train for this competition,in fact I have not taught him much chi sao in general. He just wanted to try it out and so I support him for doing so. Some people have a competitive nature and some don't.

Real chi sao does not have rules.

Its fine to have a competiteve nature, but when you take a drill meant to train certain skills and start competing in it you delude the drill.
Pretty soon it turns into patty caking because you start doing things you would never do if fx I was allowed to kick you or hit you full force.

Heck why not start a competition in hitting sandbags, shadowboxing or skipping ropes.

In general I don't disagree with you. Chi sao was never meant to be used as a competitive tool, but things change. Tiji has its push hands, now WC has its chi sao competitions its all the same. I think as long as we don't train for tournaments, but modify what we know at times to compete then I think its fine.

You mean my (Acupuncture) student Mark...

    LOL!

He's not demonstrating any of my WCK signatures.

    Thumbs up

I've judged a few Chi Sao comps and I'm impressed that the guys in the clip didn't resort to "Sumo" Chi Sao like I've seen in most comps.

Yeah that's Mark.. I don't think Mark can demonstrate any of your signatures Robert, he has a handful trying to do what I tell him to do.

It would take a bit of convincing for me to buy into the idea of ChiSao as a valid platform for competition... The whole basis for the drill is that it is cooperative...

Then there's the rule set... Oye..

    Can't folks just fight?

Yeah, we where very strict with pushing, leaning, and disconnecting from the roll. Trying to enforce as much as we could to have it look and feel like chi sao.

You have to "disconnect" from the roll to strike.. No pushing? What were the rules?

Here's my take on Chi Sao comps -

Tournament Director - "Those WCK guys can fight, and we don't want them kicking our butts...what can we do?"

Co-Director - "I know, those guys are always infighting, so why don't we set up a division where they can fight amongst themselves?"

Tournament Director - "That's a great idea! We'll call it a Chi Sao tournament, and for a measly $25 buck trophy, we can keep them from sweeping the other kung fu fighting divisions and don't have to worry about liability!"

Co-Director - "Great!!! Those guys would never win in forms competition anyway!"

    LOL!

How about a GorSao comp where you start off cross armed? Or would that be too risky that someone might actually get "pushed" or "struck"?
