You don't always have to disconnect from a roll to strike, but you can strike or disconnect . What we where looking for was after a few exchanges where made go back into the roll. There where 3. One min rounds. To head shots or to the neck. No kicks of any kind, but a leg lock, sweep was allowed. No excessive force allowed.. No finger or elbows strikes allowed.

There is no REAL secrets in Wing Chun, but because the forms are conceptual you have to know how to decipher the information..That's the secret..

Does that mean no head shots?

It seems to me that it would be best to look for things that are actually stressed in the classical training, no?

Such as breaking their structure, strikes with fansao with actual techniques, "sending them away..", ability to generate some power, exhibiting control/balance while doing these things...

Sorry, right no head shots.. What I looked for as a judge was who could control and dominate, lead by using forward pressure, root, breaking structure, uprooting, any skill that would show who had the upper hand.

    Cool Kolbasti clip..

I don't think anyone said it was good exactly..

Just that they would select the 'better' player..

If I could choose a rule-set it would preclude anyone from scoring without actually doing something right...so then you could possibly have lots of ties going on...

LOL, if by fairly new you mean for a good 20 years....

We've been having these discussions about them online for almost as long as well.

Agreed, about 20 years or more Marty.
Though it wasn't 20 years ago I was still living in Detroit when we judged one. What year was that?

20 yrs go by quick. I don't reember chi sao copetions 20 yrs ago. At the convention the Wing chun event was the biggest turnout. The MMA , Kararte, and other art had a very low turn out. I herd the MMA event had only 20 people there.

Chi Sao compitition?? This and such as this is what has made Wing Chun a laughing stock. As if it were a fighting compitition or some such. It is a simple tool by which two people can practice their attack and defend techniques. Sort of a two man drill or whatever, and now they are making it into a compitition.
Bawang is right. None Chinese should never be allowed to practice Wing Chun. Just look what you have done.

Chi Sao competitions arise from people seeing the free play chi sao in their own mo kwoons, when people are not playing cooperatively. And I am talking now of "standard" chi sao, not long arm or mai sung jong. The mistake is that people are expecting to see other camps play the same way, that there is only my way of playing chi Sao. A person with any proficiency in playing Chi Sao should be able to adapt to whatever style of play the other person offers. Mainly because there is a point in chi sao, and it is not all about rolling. The roll offers points of contact for methods of study of martial attributes and information about our opponent. The study should be focused on the center line and whether there are lines of opening. So, as the idiom says, "nothing there, then go forward...".

It is my opinion that competitions have some value, even though I believe Chi Sao should be used as the tool to understand the aspects of contact and information. There has to be rules, or else you might as well change it to sparring and chi sao would be useless at this point.

My feeling about tournaments and competitions is that there should not be any divisions - beginner, int, adv, female, male, etc. Okay, maybe age and weight. But if you decide to compete, then you should compete with whoever is available.
I believe this competition was put together with good intentions. it was an opportunity for different Wing Chun people to just get together.
