    Unemployment at 8.8%

WASHINGTON – The unemployment rate fell to a two-year low of 8.8 percent in March and companies added workers at the fastest two-month pace since before the recession began.

The Labor Department reported Friday that the economy added 216,000 new jobs last month, offsetting layoffs by local governments. Factories, retailers, education, health care and an array of professional and financial services expanded payrolls.

The second straight month of brisk hiring is the latest sign that the economy is strengthening nearly two years after the recession ended.

Private employers, the backbone of the economy, drove nearly all of the gains. They added 230,000 jobs last month, on top of 240,000 in February. It was the first time private-sector hiring topped 200,000 in back-to-back months since 2006 — more than a year before the recession started.

The unemployment rate dipped from 8.9 percent in February to 8.8 percent in March. The rate has fallen a full percentage point over the last four months, the sharpest drop since 1983.

"The U.S. labor market is finally making some serious progress. No fooling," said Sal Guatieri, economist at BMO Capital Markets Economics.

i'll never understand why people actually believe that in a true free market the people on top will do whats best for the nation as opposed to whats best for just them... to me, that is beyond naive...

i doubt many of the actual politicians believe that, but i think the rank and file cookie cutter neo con types do...

how many laws do you need to see that stack the deck in favor of the top percentage before people start looking for blood???

im all for storming the bastille... it was one of the most righteous acts of violent murder ive ever learned about... time to take a lesson from the french... with people actually believing the system is their only option, theyll just keep getting ripped off... when will people realize that they can do what they want and take what is rightfully theirs if they so choose???

the worst crime against man is making them believe they have no choice but to play by these rules... so annoying... just take yours... as individuals we aint sh1t, but its soooo easy to band together... we just need more backbone and less cowardly timid bullsh1t...

Like in WWII where companies like Ford and GM turned over some plants for production of tanks, trucks, planes etc to help win the war vs saying 'No we wont help, we just want to make ourselves rich.'

The magic number is 8%. No President besides FDR has ever won reelection when unemployment was over 8%. Notice that's the number we were promised it would stay under if we just spent money we dont have on the 'stimuls' bill.

You may well be right. Rush's guess host was mentioning that today too btw. Sadly, charisma is valued over policy. And we saw where that got us when we elected a community organizer who can read a teleprompter with passion.

If Herman Cain starts gaining traction, he has a good chance. He is the ex-CEO of Godfathers Pizza and a great speaker. Ron Paul has a shot too, if he runs. He is the anti-Obama in almost every regard, and he has good name recognition. He is a favorite of the Tea Party, and he resonates well with young people because of his social stances. I can see Romney winning however, as religion doesn't matter considering the guy we have in there now went to a hate church with a racist pastor and yet he won the last election.

I agree Palin and Gingrich are not good nominees in terms of winning. While both are politically 180 degrees away from the community organizer, their negative ratings among the electorate are very high. Santorum is also a dark horse. He already had little name recognition and he shot himself in the foot this week.

Now if Chris Christie runs, I'd bet the farm on him winning.

there is nobody in the republican party that has the clout and charisma to beat obama... leftys and rightys will always vote their way, but the independents and fence sitters will choose based on more, or less if you wanna look at it that way, than policy... also, if he was white, hillhill would be potus... and thats the truth, whether people wanna admit that or not... a lot of people voted for obama for no other reason than the color of his skin...

Chris Christie is Ronald Reagan in some ways. He is right on the issues, and conveys his message very well to the middle class. He doesn't talk down to people, but he explains his policies and why and how they will work. And he has really turned New Jersey around fiscally and he was left a mess there by his predecessor. There is a reason he won in a liberal State and has very high approval ratings there too. And he stuck to his campaign promises, something most politicians (yes, of both Parties) rarely do.

I agree with you, but I knew if I typed it first I may not say it as well as you did and thus the thread would go off on that tangent.

If independants will decide this election, the community organizer is toast. His approval ratings among them has plummeted since 2008. And he is upsetting liberals as well by not getting single-payer (ie socialized) healthcare, not closing Gitmo, and by bombing Libya. While they won't vote Republican, they may well sit out the election as many conservatives did in 2008.

    was that a compliment blue???

why is it never enough for neo cons??? i dont see any compromise in these guys... they dont wanna share, they dont wanna live in the center and do their best to please as many people as possible... they want the whole basket... and when they dont get their way they put out all this fear monger bullsh1t...

the biggest mistake obama has made so far was that he even tried to meet these guys in the middle sometimes...

anyways, if you wanna get on the dems for not changing the world dramatically in the last two years then we should point fingers at the gop right now... they have had power for less than a year and they have already lost american jobs... the only reason the unemployment rate has gone down is because the federal gov is creating jobs that is offsetting all the republican state jobs that have been absolutely destroyed...

and john boehner having a good cry in congress doesnt create jobs either... wtf is wrong with that guy??? why is he so emotionally weak??? the guy cries at the drop of a hat... its okay to cry when you are sad but this guy cries 50% of the time i see him on tv... the guy is an emotional retard...

While there are indeed people like that on the far 'right', the far left is the same way. Look at the guy in there now, he is an avowed socialist. And the far 'left' guys are calling him conservative!

That's a lie. How was literally locking the Republicans out of healthcare meetings. How is that meeting in the middle? This guy is the most partisan President I've seen yet. He is a radical leftist. He went to a racist, hate 'church'. He once told GOP leaders "I won, deal with it". How is that showing bipartisanship?

That one is all full of falsehoods. We were literally told, "This was the moment when the rise of the oceans began to slow and our planet began to heal" by the community organizer. That's not saying it's gonna take time. We were also promised unemployment would not pass 8%, and it broke 10%. Amazingly, that managed to change within 2 years.

And how in the world can you blame the GOP for job losses when the unemployment rate has gone down since they took over the House????

And again, since you are blaming the GOP, please explain how their policies got us into this recession/mess in the first place. Not one person has answered this question, including the community organizer himself.

go look at the numbers... dems have created more than theyve axed, reps have axed more than theyve created... the positive number is due to the dems... not to say the gop hasnt done anything good... and the dems have many many faults... i just dislike that holier than thou attitude the republicans front on... lots of judgement and zero humility...

and about climate change, global warming, or whatever you feel like tagging it as, one thing is very clear, things are changing... glaciers are melting and whether its man made or not, we should be watching that close... and as long as we arent sure whether humans are the problem, we should act like it is just in case... like insurance, if we are wrong it will cost us... but if its true and nothing is done, it will be far far FAR worse... so while the debate is on, im all for restrictions... not that i agree with the current restrictions and rules, but we should be doing something...

obama is not a socialist... i question whether you even know what that word means, blue... he's a weakling retard and maybe does things on the lefts agenda, but he's far from a socialist... jack layton is a socialist, a real socialist... look it up...

they still got payed... and if you look at the books, i'd put money on it being a banner year... that was also three quarters of a century ago, things are different now... people are different, the country is different, the cats that run the companies are different...

indeed some companies are very patriotic and do all they can to help their domestic economy... few and far between tho... if every business man reorganized their priorities and put country ahead of profit, eventually it would benefit everyone, including those who do business at home... the goal would be to make it so putting country first increased profits... some already do, but theres a long way to go... alot of what WAS great about the US has been sh1t on by the top percentiles greed for MORE... more more more... how much fukcing money do people need? alot of these guys are high achievers who are addicted to it, like a gambler or a crack head, they cant stop... its a sickness... just look at what this sickness has done to us all... a country of pharma dope fiends with pseudo religious political leaders and staff who are far more concerned with their next job than the one they are supposed to be doing now... having people like the CEOs and other big players from the major firms be the guy who creates and maintains the regulation that is in place to keep those very people in check, is suicidal... crazy... those are jobs that should be done by public lifers, guys who will not be going private when they are done... as it is, wall street has made these positions as stepping stones to the big money, not a protector of the people WHO THEY SERVE... wall street only serves itself... thats like going to every major gand in LA and recruiting their top guys as the police force... sounds stupid, right??? but doesnt it bother you that private interests have so much controll over your government? doesnt it bother you that some citizens vote is worth more than yours is?

yeah they forced that one through... they said they would, they ran on it, and they did... and its not like the republicans are above that lol... but thats just one thing, a big thing, but just one... there are a ton of things he's caved on, he's a total sellout and he gets no appreciation from either side anytime he reaches out... the gop is in end game mode, theyre going for the ring and anyone who disagrees with that isnt paying attention... they are approaching everything with this all or nothing attitude... they shroud it in words like "broke" "terrorist" "socialist" and sh1t like that... and when republicans axe programs, they are cutting way more progressive programs than they are conservative ones...
