    RIP Robert W. Smith

I haven't been able to fully confirm this yet. Wikipedia confirms, but that's not the most reliable source. One of our freelancers, Robert Dreeban, say he has communicated with Smith's wife and got confirmation there.

What a sad start to the week after 4th of July.

I have a few books of Rbert's with "Martial Musings" being the last one I bought.
I don't always agree with his conclusion but the man had a wealth of knowledge.

Both Smith and Draeger made many contributions to the literature of kung fu in the west.

And, Smith was a very good writer.

    R. Smith's books were among the first I read on CMA. I didn't share all of his opinions, but not only was he very knowledgeable, but he had a unique writing style that was a lot more fun to read than many other MA authors. He also wrote some books under the pen name John F. Gilbey, the best of which was Western Boxing and World Wrestling.

Back in the late '80s I corresponded with Mr. Smith a few times. I was always surprised that he personally handwrote back to me, and seemed very down-to-earth.

    May he R.I.P.

Prayers have been said to the four directions for him, and his entire clan.

    Taiwan's Bamboo Curtain.

IMHO,Mr.Robert W. Smith opened up the Bamboo curtain on C.M.A's in Taiwan and exposed the many masters to the Western World. Check out his many books and Films on Chinese Martial Arts. be Well. NM.

ability to write well or communicate well in words is a gift.

MA material is difficult to write.

    usually boring

so if someone can make some senses and make them fun to read

that would facilitate the spread of CMA.

he will be remembered as a mile stone in the west.

yes, in 1950's and 1960's Taiwan, CMA was very closed door despite of some gathering events.

only early 1970s, there was more open door teaching on wider scale namely in colleges.
