    Playing Wing Chun

I have often spoken about a phenomenon where two people follow Wing Chun principles to the letter, and you end up with what I call "Playing Wing Chun." Here is an example of it.

What do you guys do to remedy this problem?

Get them to spar with a functional martial artist to provoke a wake-up call.

I have seen guys who are halfway crisp who throw some kicks and such do about the same thing. Granted, those guys were not good in several ways.

Discourage the Wing Chun man from 'sparring' with other Wing Chun men, in favour of getting him against boxers, MMA guys and muay thai guys.

"From a psychological point of view, demons represent the universal equivalents of the dark, cruel, animal depths of the mind. When we as martial artists are preparing ourselves to overcome our fear of domination at the hands of an opponent, we must go deep within our inner being and allow the darkest parts of ourselves to be revealed. In order to battle the monsters in an abyss, we must sometimes unleash the demon within" http://darkwingchun.wordpress.com/

Is there a better way to get your guys ready without getting them beaten up?

go to other schools and ask to start out with light sparring. then progress to harder sparring.

Sparring inside your own school can only get you so far. It will often lead to sloppiness as you get to know the other and how he/she fights.

I have lost counts of the times I have been to a new school and seen teachers saying "if you do x he will do Y". well duh maybe in your school, certainly not in mine

I have only noticed that at places that didn't want to spar full-contact. Getting your cap twisted back usually cuts out silliness.

Aww! How cute are these guys?!

C'mon people, have a heart!!! They're only doing what they have been told and it looks like there were serious limits, not only to their training, in the rules.

Personally, I can't stand this sort of thing

IMHO, The only time you play Wing Chun is in chi sao/gor sao...etc. The example given in the link is not an example of any of those, rather it's an example of two inexperienced students trying to win point on who can land a tap/ "hit" first.
