    Back problem

    Firstly, I am posting here because i do not know where else to put it and i'm looking for some help.

    Ok, my main problem right now is that my l5, l4, and l3(their the lowest virtebre of the spine) are going out on me. This started bout 2 months ago by a stressing my back-i'm only 17- and its been reinjured a few times :( One problem is that my hamstrings are very tight, and that i've been doing my best to counter, but the nerves
    -and not knowing really anything- being pinched doesnt help

    right now i am not involved in any study of any martial arts, and my current problem is a big restraint of starting. basically i've grown up around ppls who are very biased agianst any forms of martial arts, and personally i'm quite interested in them, not just for the physical aspect

    I am basically looking for any help possible, and seeing i have no real knowledge i just ordered a few books that i hope will help me and set me on the path i desire to take.

    You NEED to check out www.mattfurey.com

    Matt Furey is awesome. Get his book, "Combat Conditioning". Lots of his exercises focus on a strong, flexible spine. It's done woders for me.

    Back pain?

    Are you kidding? You are in the US and you have Chiropractors in almost every street...even in China, we know that the British Medical Journal of 1990 have found that Chiropractic treatment of low back pain was two times more effective than medical or physio treatment.
    See one and get fixed.
    You are young and still in your teens, if this sets before you heal...that is for life.
    I am a medical doctor trained, graduated and taught in Harvard Medical School...this is my prescription to you.

    Dear Sevan,

    As a Yoga instructor, I DO NOT RECCOMEND MATT FUREY's Video's for you L-3 to L-5 issues. The training will be too hard on your back. While I do agree somewhat with shaolin temple about seeing a Chiropractor, I would actual see a number of doctors. How close to Louisville, KY are you? If you are driving distance, I have a Yoga school that I would reccomend. I would stop doing hard style martial arts for at least 1 year. You need to stretch and strengthen your back. That will take some time.

    Also how did you injury start? How long has your Back been this way? Let me know, I may be able to help you to heal.

    Chiropractors

    Actually i have been seeing a chiropractor(for the last two weeks, and i think i'm getting better, but with manual chiropractors it takes a few days after the adjustment for the muscles to relax. Also i did see a doctor and had xrays done but doctor said my back looked very good.

    And i have stopped doing anything, basically. becuase of the pain levels, i have had no choice to stop doing anything more than getting up outta bed, sitting and standing, but i'm getting better finally,


    About the injury....
    It started with moving a yard or two of gravel over someone's driveway, i took an hour break for lunch-cauz thats when dad's home- and in the afternoon i was doing yard work type of stuff, i was bending over while on my knees cleaning out the old bark-landscape stuff- from under a tree and somehow the cold air and/or muscles relaxing let a virtabrae loose and it took a few minuts of laying in a U to actually flatten out and be able to walk to the truck to go home. This occured on the 17th of november. Chiropractor explained that my left pelvis was rocked forward, which was misaligning things. And me getting to ambitious didnt help the healing process, playin around and stuff...
    Right now i'm back to the point to where i can either sit or stand and walk, carefully, with very little pain. and right, i just went to the chiropractor 2 days ago, now i cant tell if my back is still out or the muscles are still tired and weak from being stretched, or both.

    Brian, why would you not reccomend Matt Furey's videos? I haven't seen the videos, and I didn't recommend those, but the books are awesome. I plan on getting his videos this month. What do you see wrong with his meathod? It has worked very well for me. I've been doing a Yoga out of the book "Learn Yoga in a Weekend" for about 2 years now and it's helped me allot. But I have quit to focus on the exercises in Furey's book "Combat Conditoning". Especially the back exercises. I would really value the opinon of a yoga intstructor.

    The reason, at liest I think, he said that is becuase for right now and a while I shouldnt do anything besides let my back heal. Afterwards I'm sure it would be a great idea, and I'm kickin myself for not being in shape and I'm gonna change that when I heal.

    While I do like some of Matt Furey's stuff, This person has rather serious injury. The stuff in Mr. Furey's video, simply may not be what this person needs. Mr. Furey's tapes are for people who are should be already free of injury.

    With any type of back injury, you must be very careful in how you move the spine. Injured spines take a VERY long time to heal. Even yoga can be damaging to the injured area if done in correctly.

    When healing one must examine the nature of the injury, What areas of the body are affected and where the injury may cause secondary issues. (i.e. Lower back problems may lead to knee issues. Unstable cervial joints may lead to flat feet and TMJ). Once these analysis is done, find a solid routine that will strength the area and make it flexible.

    To do this, you need proper instruction I feel. After, you would not try and cure your cancer from a book would you? The same holds true the body. Seek out skilled people and get help from them personally. These are the types of things that you can not learn from a book or tapes.
