    Workshop review

Finally got some time to myself to write a few words and follow up with a short summary of last weekend’s workshop here in Arizona.

Soon after GM Gee’s arrival on Friday afternoon members of the Wutang Swordsman’s club of Arizona met up and discussed the future plans and direction for the club and then got down to some serious training and corrections on applications from the form. The session ended approximately 11pm with everyone tired and happy. We then took GM out to eat and relax, more discussion followed until late in the night on the nature of being a swordsman and Buddhist philosophy with some very interesting personal experiences being shared.

On Saturday after a few hours rest the Hung Fa Yi Wing Chun Chi Sau workshop that was open to the public commenced. GM Gee set the scene for the days training in the early part of the morning with lecture and discussion on the difference between Siu Nim Tau (Tools) and Siu Lin Tau (application with correct Time, Space and Energy) training and nature of Kiu Sau and Chi Sau in the Hung Fa Yi System. Much emphasis was placed on recognizing the correct time and space in which Kiu Sau and Chi Sau occurs and the correct use of the HFY centerline concept for engagement. The workshop participants were reminded time and again “No Centerline, No Wing Chun”.

The hands on portion of the workshop started with an introduction of Sam Dim Jeet Kiu, concept essentially 3 ranges/methods of intercepting the bridge and application of the HFY 2 point Kiu Sau for engagement. The 2 points, referring to the correct way to apply wrist and elbow position to intercept an attack and check your opponent’s center of gravity.

After a short lunch break we moved on to exploring how to open or close the centerline after initial bridging has been established, what happens from this position will determine how to react using 2 line Jong Sau and 4 gate attack defense strategies or if Chi Sau is required. When enough skill had been developed on these ideas the late afternoon saw a change in focus from Time and Spatial to Energy considerations. There were three areas of focus from the “HFYWC Ng Long Ying Jong Faat” 5 energy concept that had to be explored, Fa (neutralize), Ying(shape) and Lau(flow). Working on the first of these “Fa” took us up to the scheduled end of the workshop at which time GM Gee invited everyone at the workshop to come back after dinner to continue working on the material as he had a lot more to share with us.

When dinner was finished we returned to the school around 7pm and reviewed the neutralizing “Fa” concept from earlier and commenced training in the “Ying” or shape portion and more recognizable to outsiders Tan, Bong, Fuk Chi Sau focus. There were not enough hours in the day to cover all the information GM wanted to impart and at around 11.30 pm we closed up for the night. Throughout the workshop GM Gee was a mountain of energy, non-stop touching hands with and correcting and explaining the finer details to all in attendance, continuously reinforcing his philosophy of direct transmission.

Sunday morning was closed training for the WHFYWC Association instructor candidates, reviewing and fine tuning the material from the workshop and planning for GM Gees next visit to the AZ Kwoon to pick up where he left off.
