IMO, the "shape" of your defensive and offensive hands is not that important. You may not care whether you can knock down your opponent with your fist or palm.

It may be more interest to look at "hand skill" from a much higher level instead. Among all the MA styles (Chinese and non-Chinese), there are only 3 categories of hand skill that exist on this planet. There are:

    1. 连消带打(Lian Xiao Dai Da) - block and strike back at the same time.
    2. 换掌(Huan Zhang) - switch hands.
    3. 闪打(Shan Da) - dodge (without blocking) and strike back at the same time.

The curve punch that you use one arm to block (deflect) your opponent's punch, and then use the same arm to strike back like a spear technique should belong to the 1st category.

I don't want to promote or criticize anyone.

A good way to test shape/structure is to test it with weights. An attacking opponent will exert force onto you; if your structure does not allow you to manipulate weights, you won't have a chance against a resisting opponent. I'm not telling anyone to lift weights, I'm telling everyone to test their structure.

The second test is speed; no point having strong structures if your agility is compromised.

Copy the structures in the photos. Do the tests and judge for yourself.

You really don ' t need weights to test out your structure , in wing chun you would train in your stances right ? In Hung Gar , Choy Li Fut they use horse stances and other kung fu stances to build their foudation . Then you would practice kung fu techniques with your partner . If you can move easily , then your foundation is not strong so you need more training in your stance training . Samething with wing chun you practice on yourwing chun stances . But it takes patient to build that foundation , then you would test it out on your training partner . Weights is the other have of strenght training . In wing chun you practice on your Sil Lum Tao set to build your internal strenght which build your foundation too . I know about it because I do it when I train with friends .

For speed , be as fast as you can , depending on what kind of techniques you ' re practicing . Weght training helps develop your physical power and internal training helps develop your internal power . This is just my opinion I ' m sharing it with you . The power begins to circulate from the feet as you stand on the ground , the internal energy continue to circulate throughout your entire body .
There are times when you accidently bump into people , watch them fly off balance , if they don ' t lose balance your structure is ' nt strong enough .

I find practicing both the External and Internal is needed...Both you and impericaltaichi have great points.

But after all what is the wooden man. In addition to all the other stuff it does...its also a form of weight lifting. Because uprooting the wooden man with force builds external and internal power!

    does it not!

Actually the second character is palm, not hand.

You are right! The palm is better translation. Actually, "arm" may even be better. The switch palms (hands, arms) appears in a majority part of the hand skill. When you use right Tan Shou to block your opponent's punch, the contact point is on the forarm. If you use the left Tan Shou to take over the block (switch palms), this will free your right arm again for your strike. This is more conservative approach than "连消带打(Lian Xiao Dai Da) - block and strike back at the same time". When you block with one arm and strike back with another arm, you are committed at that moment. When you block with one arm, you may not commit to attack back. If you do, you use "连消带打(Lian Xiao Dai Da)" after your block.

So "换掌(Huan Zhang)" is just a block (or strike) followed by "连消带打(Lian Xiao Dai Da)".

The guy in the pictures has a very weak structure, don't copy any of it!, it is only a shadow or bad imitation of WC positions.

If you want you want to see real WC you won't find it with these guys trying to sell things or promote themselves.
