285: Life Gamble (1979) Directed by Chang Cheh
Soundtrack used in intro and finale - The finale music as Arthur and Bedevere approach the Castle Aargh in one of my all-time favorite films, Monty Python and the Holy Grail (1975).
I saw this for the first time last night on Flying Five Finger One Armed Eight Pole Shaolin Exploding Death Touch Thursdays on EL REY. It's one of those classic Shaw Brother wuxia flicks, based on some novel so Chinese supertitles of the name of the character appear alongside their first appearance on screen (it's not much help as, typical to this genre, there are way too many characters to keep track of anyways). It's got plenty of wacky weapons and deliciously affectatious performances and stars the great Alexander Fu Sheng, Kara Hui and the Venoms crew (Sheng Chiang is my fav here as 'Whipper Tang' - that name might be my new rap name - it just makes me chuckle). A fun film, but given the soundtrack I kept thinking how hilarious it would be if Monty Python gave it the What's Up, Tiger Lily? (1966) re-dub treatment.
And of course, I could not wait to post it here.

This DeWolfe Music Library track is heard in many Shaw Brothers films, including:
Dirty Ho
Five Superfighters
The Kid from Kwangtung
This track, along with many other Dewolfe tracks, is also heard in the British horror comedy, Horror Hospital (1973).
290: The original Five Deadly Venoms (1978) has a few scenes where they poach the soundtrack form Monty Python and the Holy Grail (1975) again. The music from MP&tHG's opening credits (around when they are talking about nasti m00se bites) is used a few times in 5DV. I saw it again last week on Flying Five Finger One Armed Eight Pole Shaolin Exploding Death Touch Thursdays on EL REY and keep forgetting to post it here.
The funny thing to me is that MP&tHG's soundtrack was also poached for # 285: Life Gamble (1979), which was also directed by Chang Cheh and starred a lot of the Venoms crew. The thought of Chang Cheh and the Venoms crew watching MP&tHG back in the day strikes me as really amusing.

Thanks, Gene!
Actually, the Monty Python music (or at least a high percentage of it) was DeWolfe Music Library tracks. Shaw Brothers became licensed to use DeWolfe tracks sometime around 1976, and so it's not likely that Chang Cheh or any of the Shaw actors had any say in the soundtrack choices.
That surely explains it.
It's also a major buzz kill. I was just imagining those guys watching the black knight scene and what their reactions to it might have been.
