    Thanks, that's one step further than where I started.

    Google translate results:

    中 定 --> In fixed
    定中 --> Given in

    Can anybody offer any help here on what this is supposed to mean?

    If you want to begin 20 pages of "abstract" discussion which may have nothing to do with "combat", 中定 will be a good start.

    A friend of mine had a workshop just to talk about 中定.

    Given the fact that it's encompassed by a yin yang I'd be tempted to say that it means fixed and yielding. Now the multitude of philosophical and martial arts related meanings you can ponder on your own.

    You have to understand where your center is. The external 3 harmonies that your

    - hand coordinate with your foot,
    - elbow coordinate with your knee,
    - shoulder coordinate with your hip,

    is a simple example that all your body movements are referenced to your center. When you can guard your center, you can guard all your movements. When you can shake your opponent's center, you can do almost anything that you want.

    A grappler will use it to set up his hip throw. When you push your opponent's right arm up, and left arm dorwn, you slide in and strike your "center" to your opponent's "center". This will disconnect your opponent's limbs. You then hook your oppponent's leg, when he responds to it, you get your waist hold that you need, and finish with your hip trow.

    If you have trained the most basic "hip throw", you know where you and your opponent's center are. It's pretty much just like "common sense". There isn't much to talk about it.

    I'm not looking for that. I'm looking for the translation of these characters.

    Is it just Yang and Yin? White normally denotes Yang and Black is Yin.
