    Sleeping Dogs

Somehow this one escaped me. It's like Grand Theft Auto set in Hong Kong, with kungfu fighting pretty similar to Batman: Arkham City.

The setting is that you're Wei Shen, an under cover officer, set to infiltrate a triad gang. Fast cars/motorcyles, cool kungfu moves, guns, good solid story, and a wide variety of activities to do like street races, martial art clubs to defeat, finding statues for your sifu to unlock new moves etc.

You can even do karaoke at the bam bam club lol

Anyway if you like kungfu, you like video games, this is one not to be missed.

    Sweet. A thread for this!

This will probably be a better Donnie/Dog flick than Big Rescue.

Donnie Yen To Headline ‘Sleeping Dogs’ For Neal Moritz’s Original Film

EXCLUSIVE: Who best to start a new IP for Neal Moritz’s Original Film (Fast and Furious) than the IP Man himself? Martial artist Donnie Yen is set to star in a new feature from Moritz entitled Sleeping Dogs, which is based on the top-selling video game by Square Enix.

Yen, who recently co-starred in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story and xXx: Return of Xander Cage, follows an undercover police officer (Yen) on a mission to take down one of the most powerful and dangerous criminal organizations in the world: the notorious Triads. The movie based on an action video game is set in Hong Kong and focuses on martial arts fighting, racing, boat chases … and shooting while doing all of that.

Yen, a Chinese martial artist, has long been a fight choreographer and is probably best known to audiences as the star — and Wing Chun grandmaster — of the IP Man franchise. Original Film is producing with DJ2 Entertainment, specifically producers will be Moritz, Dmitri Johnson and Dan Jevons with Toby Ascher and Stephan Bugaj executive producing.

Yen is still well loved in China. About a month before xXx: Return of Xander Cage bowed in the country, Paramount put Yen front and center in the posters for the film to appeal to local audiences and to drive ticket sales on local Chinese websites. Yen upstaged star Vin Diesel on marketing materials there and it certainly paid off. The film won the 2nd biggest Imax February debut ever in China, behind only the 2014 film and local sensation The Monkey King 2.

The third of IP Man did tremendous business — $124M in China — last year.

CAA, which represents Yen, is packaging the film and in discussions with multiple financiers.

    Peripheral mention...

Indie survival game We Happy Few is being made into a movie
Let's hope it'll be better than most video game movie adaptations
By Rob Thubron on Apr 3, 2017, 7:00 AM 11 comments

Tomb Raider, Assassin’s Creed, Warcraft, most recent and upcoming video game movie adaptations are based on big titles that even non-gamers recognize, so it’s quite surprising to learn that indie game We Happy Few is in line for the big screen treatment.
The dystopian survival title made quite an impression with its E3 trailer last year. When it arrived in Early Access on Steam (where it’s still at) some claimed it had been overhyped, but it's since received updates and is currently rated as Very Positive by users.
Variety reports that developer Compulsion Games has teamed up with Gold Circle, producer of the “My Big Fat Greek Wedding” and “Pitch Perfect” franchises, along with dj2 Entertainment for the project. The two companies are currently looking for writers to create a script.
We Happy Few isn’t the only video game movie that dj2 Entertainment is currently involved with. The company is producing the adaptation of Sleeping Dogs, set for release next year and starring Donnie Yen, and co-producing the Sonic the Hedgehog movie.
The game is set in a retrofuturistic, alternate-1960s English town where citizens take hallucinogenic drug “Joy” to mask the guilt of a terrible act they committed. Players take control of a rebel who has stopped taking Joy and is seeking the truth.
"[dj2 Entertainment] approached us enthusiastically with really solid ideas about how to adapt our game to film while retaining its menace, dark humor, and central themes,” said Compulsion Games head developer Guillaume Provost.
Plots aren’t the most important thing when it comes to deciding which video games get made into movies. It certainly hasn’t hindered Tetris, which is reportedly being made into an $80 million trilogy. But We Happy Few’s story has the potential to make it an interesting feature film, and hopefully one that’s better than the usually terrible movies we’re used to seeing from the genre.
“Our commitment is to make a movie that remains true to the source material, while still surprising fans,” said dj2 Entertainment CEO Dmitri M. Johnson.

Seeing as we covered Tomb Raider, Assassin’s Creed, and Warcraft.

Donnie Yen to begin filming Benny Chan movie soon

From Cinema Online Exclusively for Yahoo Newsroom
    Heidi Hsia

    5 March 2019

6 Mar – Busy-bee Donnie Yen knows no time for rest, as he admitted that he is filming from one project after another.

As reported on Oriental Daily, the actor, who appeared at a Po Leung Kuk event as the new Youth Services ambassador recently, shared that he will begin filming a new movie soon, to be directed by Benny Chan.

"It will be a crime film, which will begin production at the end of the month," he said.

However, after months of filming in other countries, Donnie stated that he has been trying to persuade Benny to shoot the new movie in Hong Kong instead so that he could spend more time with his family.

The actor also admitted that he has been working hard to get fit again, especially after letting himself go during the Lunar New Year season.

"The movie would have multiple stunt scenes and fights like in "SPL", so I have to get back into shape," he said.

Although he made no mention of the title of the new movie, it is believed that Donnie was talking about "Crossfire" - a live adaptation of the hit video game "Sleeping Dogs" that previously pushed its filming schedule due to his commitment with Disney's live action film, "Mulan".
Hold the phone - Crossfire and Sleeping Dogs are the same film? I'm going to wait for more confirmation before I merge these threads.

    Golden Empire

Donnie Yen Lauds Hong Kong’s Return to China as He Starts New Films ‘Sleeping Dogs,’ ‘Golden Empire’
    By Rebecca Davis

Hong Kong “Mulan” star Donnie Yen this week reiterated his political loyalty to mainland China as he teased work on the upcoming theatrical adaptation of popular video game “Sleeping Dogs” and announced “Golden Empire,” a new China-backed crime thriller.

His hometown is currently roiling under the impact of a controversial new national security law imposed by Beijing that strips Hong Kong of many of its former freedoms, which came into effect July 1 — the anniversary of Britain’s handover of the territory to China. Ten people protesting its stipulations were arrested within 24 hours of its enactment, including a 15-year-old girl.

The same day, however, the “Ip Man” star feted by posting a celebratory message complete with champagne bottle emoji to his Chinese and western social media accounts. Under a video montage of himself tickling the ivories and shaking hands with Chinese president Xi Jinping, he reminisced: “Recalling such memorable night [sic] in 2017 where I had the privilege to performed [sic] with piano Mastro [sic] Lang Lang for Chairman Xi and wife along with several hundred guests who came to watch the show and celebrated the night!”

Comments on his Instagram version of the post have been “limited,” and show only positive feedback. But on his official Facebook account, the post was met with more teeth by fans baffled by his “celebration” of what many have deemed a devastating occasion.

“He probably has 100 million reasons. But indeed tragic seeing such [a] talented person like Donnie fighting for the people on set but unable to do the same in real life,” wrote one commenter.

Yen himself responded directly, writing in English: “I am fighting for the Chinese people, which indeed for the longest time, [have] been undermined and disrespected, but worst abused.”

Yen is best known in the west for his turn in “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story” and “xXx: Return of Xander Cage,” and plays Mulan’s mentor Commander Tung in Disney’s upcoming live-action version of “Mulan.”

But staying in Beijing’s good books is likely key for Yen, 56, who these days is one of Asia’s most bankable stars thanks to the China market.

Last December’s “Ip Man 4” grossed $165 million in China, but just $3.7 million in Hong Kong (and $4 million stateside), making the mainland far and away Yen’s most lucrative fanbase.

He also recently starred in “Enter the Fat Dragon,” a comedy backed by China’s Bona Film Group that cancelled its planned Feb. 16 theatrical release because of the coronavirus and moved directly to streaming.

His next project appears to be “Sleeping Dog,” an action movie adaptation of the popular 2012 video game of the same name developed by United Front Games and published by Square Enix.

Yen confirmed his participation in the film over the weekend, posting a video of himself busting a few warm-up moves at the gym and writing that he is “aiming to make another breakthrough movie.” He will star as main character Wei Shen, an undercover police officer who infiltrates the Hong Kong triads. “I am excited to start preparing for the next challenge,” he said.

First announced in 2017, the project will be produced by Neal Moritz’s Original Film (“Fast and Furious”) and DJ2 Entertainment and is listed as currently in pre-production, though neither company replied to Variety’s request for comment by press time.

Yen will also star in and co-produce a new crime thriller called “Golden Empire,” about a drug lord wanted by authorities in both the U.S. and Mexico. It will be backed by China’s Starlight Media and SA Inc., with Starlight’s CEO Peter Luo also producing.
