    Famous sayings

    Hi all,

During the discussion in my intro post some great sayings were brought up. One that I have always liked that we said often in my former Kwoon is...

"Pain is fear leaving the body."

I would love to hear the great sayings you all have so I thought I'd open this tread for that purpose.

I performed a search but didn't find anything like this so if there is already a thread on the subject then I'm sorry and the mods may delete it as they wish.

I probably won't respond very much on this thread except maybe to add other sayings, so please share and peace to all!

Common ones for us, sometimes sarcastic...

    - empty glasses make the most noise
    - more practice, less talk
    - you students must be a curse that our teacher put on us
    - we told you all the secrets on the first day
    - bend knees, turn waist, relax
    - it's supposed to be YOU doing it 10,000 times. Not US telling you 10,000 times
    - pain is my constant companion
    - pain is my 2nd cousin
    - pain is my friend
    - it's supposed to be "gung fu" not "gah(fake) fu"!
    - gung fu is about YOU training and suffering, not about US watching you and suffering
    - you invented another way to do it wrong
    - you have to have spirit and attitude
    - you have to be bold, not timid
    - you have to want his attack, and you go right in and kill him
    - you ungrateful students refuse to do as we tell you
    - here's something we never told you before... BEND YOUR KNEES, TURN YOUR WAIST, RELAX!!!
    - that is how to be a Mantis!
    - Mantis has to fly!
    - you have to get in. you have to be happy to go in and kill him.
    - FAIL!
    - too slow!
    - relax, power, then let go!
    - no chicken head!
    - eyes front! look!
    - you invented a new kung fu, because that's not what we showed you to do
    - you must be doing this wrong on purpose!
    - you give us great pain

If you have to think about speed/power/structure/balance/..., that's not your true speed/power/structure/balance/....

When you move in "slow speed", that's the "fake you". When you move in "fast speed", that's the "true you". Sometime you may let the "fake you" to fool you for quite sometime without knowing.

    Hands are like 2 doors.

We rely on feet to defeat the opponent.

    Shou Si Liang San Men

    Quan Ping Jiao Da Ren.

    Stepping and positioning are everything.

    etc etc.

This is old longfist saying but I think there is some issue here. If your hands can open the door, your leg may be too close to kick. After all, the punching range is always closer than the kicking range. This saying does fit very well in the grappling art though. The moment that your hands get hold on your opponent, your cut, hook, lift, twist, bite, scoop, sweep, spring, block, break, ... can take your opponent down.

I have addressed the "missing leg" issue in Taiji push hand many times. Without leg, Taiji push hand is just "push". With leg, Taiji push hand can be "throw".

This is great insight and if you haven't already I would suggest that you add this to the TCMA strategies thread. Every good fighter should understand long, medium and short range techniques and if they are training Taiji without throws then well, they aren't training Taiji.

Great stuff everybody! Please keep em coming!!!

Not so famous saying that should be more famous:

"Pain is your body's natural protective mechanism of telling you something is wrong. Pay attention and respect this product of millions of years of evolution."
