I picked up a subscription again with this good issue. I was surprised by how promptly it was delivered.
Also, I was glad to see the picture of my wing chun sifu Augustine Fong being given the WVTAA
sifu of the year award. Thanks
Check out this preview video by Bad Ass Bunny for an article featured in our MAR+APR 2013 issue: Hard Training for Soft Style.

Great research/article cover story about the invention of the nandao sword, Gene. My own choice of weaponry is not the WingChun/Hung Gar Butterfly knives, but to have a sword in hand that is based on that n=knife design does appeal to me, incorporation into my cross-step set. Must have one. Availability? Martial ArtsMart?

So you're looking for a nandao? The problem with nandao is that they are specifically designed for modern wushu, so you don't find many 'combat steel' nandao. They all have whippy wushu blades. But if you're looking for something that you can punch through a car door, look into Dadao.
Here's a meme card from this issue. Please spread virally.

Ha! Thanks for the info Gene, don''t really need a combat sword but don't want to practice with a prop either, for workout. I had noticed the Dadao on the Store site page. A handsome cleaver , that one. Will have to check out historical reference online. Will only buy from MAMart but would like to know of it's use, past. I like wielding a Templar broadsword but would like to narrow down to something TCMA. The look is good (Dadao), powerful design. Like the two hand accommodation which is something I'm used to. Thanks! http://chinesemartialstudies.com/2012/11/26/693/

I used to practice Dadao and even wrote an article on it: Xingyi's Dadao
The Lost Legacy of the Big Blade Troop (2006 March/April). I'm afraid I've fallen out of practice with it however. We produced an instructional DVD on it - 5 Elements Xingyi Sword - and I keep telling myself I should review it and bring that into my practice regimen again.
But back on topic...

Thanks, Gene! Great to have access to a DVD showing traditional Dadao sword form/use. Will also want to pick up a 36' hardwood staff to workout with, leading up to sword, I see you have them in stock.

...but uncredited reprints without permission is a form of plagiary. This was brought to our attention by one of our loyal readers. We have no idea who these people are and are contacting them to find out.

They apologized profusely for the situation, have credited the article to us on their e-mag, and made amends.
I must thank our readership for watching out for us in situations like this. With the global market, it's impossible to be able to monitor all of the different publications around the world, so it is very reassuring to have loyal readers watching out for us and bringing such matters to my attention.
