    Box Office News

Guillermo DEL TORO 's Pacific Rim and Jay CHOU 周杰倫's The Rooftop 天台 went head-to-head in Taiwan's cinemas yesterday, with the former delivering the latter a crushing blow at the box office on home turf.

The action-packed science fiction film Rim made NT$7.94 million (US$266,000) on 23 screens, more than eight times the box office of kungfu-musical Rooftop which secured just NT$0.94 million (US$31,500) on 17 screens in Taipei.

Six years ago, actor-singer Chou's directorial debut, Secret 不能說的秘密 (2007) made NT$26 million (US$870,000) in Taipei, a figure that his new film may struggle to match as it loses screening slots to Pacific Rim.

Furthermore, a major typhoon is expected to reach Northern Taiwan late tonight, which may shutter cinemas this evening. Chou's film also faces new competition from US action-comedy The Heat which opened in Taipei cinemas today.

Rooftop also landed softly in China yesterday, taking RMB15.9 million (US$2.59 million). Including Wednesday night previews, the film has made RMB17.1 million (US$2.78 million). Today it also competes with new release After Earth .

In China, Chou broke the box office record for a debuting Chinese director with Secret which ends its run with RMB36.7 million (US$5,97 million), a record since taken by fellow actors WANG Lee-hom 王力宏 and XU Zheng 徐崢.

Rooftop also opened in Singapore and Malaysia yesterday through Cathay-Keris Films Pte Ltd 國泰克裡斯公司 and mm2 Entertainment Sdn Bhd mm2影視娛樂有限公司 respectively. It opens in Hong Kong next month.

    Caught this on Netflix...regretted it

A Chinese Kung Fu take on Bollywood. You'd think I'd like it. But no. Jay Chou is sometimes dubbed the Asian Justin Bieber. That's actually an insult to Beiber. ouch, right?

The film is like 2 hours and I had to watch it over several sittings because I kept getting interrupted by stuff. I don't know why I bothered to finish it - some vain hope that it would get better. There were some interesting scenes, but those could have been cut down to a 5-10 min trailer. The fights sucked - Chou has no impact when he hits. He hits like a girl, not a girl like Gina or Ronda, but a girl like Judy Garland. Jay's buddies wear a lot of tie-dye (one even refers to it as 'woodstock' fashion) which is an odd depiction of Asian hippies. The love interest, Li Xin'ai has a whiny nasally voice which might be cute in a Sanrio ad, but was unbearable here. Chou wrote, directed, composed, starred...hopefully this won't give the Biebs any ideas.

Only Bollywood can do Bollywood. Indian music has more rhythm than Chinese pop music. The Chinese colors were way too gaudy. China considered The Rooftop innovative, but anyone who has seen a real Bollywood flick can tell this is a major fail.

Even a swordfight, one that ended in Jay Chou getting stabbed multiple times in the face, could not have saved this.
