What is the Warrior's Cert exam? (the website page for that entry was blank). Also, are only standard Songshan sets allowed in the competition?

    Thanks for the assist, ShaolinDiva!

Maybe you can answer the question posed on our other thread here: Is the North American Shaolin Federation connected to the previous Shaolin Association of North America or is it something completely new?

    Thought Shaolin already was global.
    Shaolin temple goes global
IANS India Private LimitedBy Indo Asian News Service | IANS India Private Limited – 7 hours ago

Beijing, June 18 (IANS) The Shaolin Temple, known as the cradle of Chinese kung fu, is preparing to stage its first cultural festival in the US as part of efforts to expand its global clout.

The first North American Shaolin Cultural Festival is scheduled to be held from Oct 8 to 14 in Los Angeles, according to Shi Yongxin, abbot of the Buddhist temple in the city of Dengfeng in central China's Henan province, reported Xinhua.

The temple has successfully hosted an annual Shaolin Temple Day in California for nine consecutive years, Shi said.

He added that the temple has over a million followers in North America.

"We're working to build a platform to support exchanges between Shaolin disciples and kung fu lovers across the world," he said.

Over the last two decades, Shi and his disciples have visited more than 60 countries and regions, mainly to stage kung fu shows. The abbot regularly spends two months a year conducting overseas trips.

In September, Shi will lead a delegation to take part in an international martial music festival to be held in Russia. The "Shaolin fighting monks" will demonstrate their kung fu skills in Moscow's Red Square, according to Shi.

Shaolin kung fu has gained worldwide popularity through the success of Chinese kung fu movies, particularly those filmed in the 1970s.

Shi said training for the inheritors of Buddhism has been crucial to the 1,500-year-old temple's development.

"We encourage our young monks to travel overseas to expound scriptures and pursue their practice. We also welcome people all over the world to learn kung fu and practice Zen Buddhism," he said.

The temple, which has more than 300 locally registered monks, also has more than 40 overseas culture centres, mostly in the US and Europe.

Shi said he expects a boom in Buddhism's popularity in the west and believes that the religion can blend well with western culture.

"Buddhism can win respect from the world because it can peacefully co-exist with other religions. It focuses on the purification of the soul," he explained.

In order to bring Shaolin martial arts to a wider audience, Shi has joined hands with a Beijing-based film company to shoot a 3D kungfu movie -- a remake of the 1982 blockbuster "Shaolin Temple".

Born in east China's Anhui province, Shi became abbot of the Shaolin Temple in 1999. He has courted controversy in recent years for developing business operations, such as profitable kung fu shows and online sales, and has subsequently been referred to as China's "CEO monk".

However, Shi said he always insists on making time to meditate, despite his tight schedule.

"How wonderful it would be if I could sit in my meditation room for dozens of days at a time," he mused.

"That's what I hope for my life from the bottom of my heart," he said.

To millions in the West, Shaolin is a synonym for Kung Fu or martial arts. No doubt that 2013 Shaolin Temple Cultural Festival, which will be held on Oct 11 – 15, 2013 in Los Angeles, CA, will have great martial art programs of Kung Fu Competition, Shaolin Warrior Certification Exam, Shaolin Kung Fu Evening Gala, Master Classes, and Warrior Coach Camp. But it will also include Shaolin Culture Exhibition, Shaolin Temple Cultural Center Opening Puja and Taking Refugee Ceremony, and Open Discussion Forum on Zen and Modern Life.

Shaolin Temple was first established in China by Indian dhyana master Buddhabhadra about 1500 years ago. Buddhabhadra’s contribution to mankind not limited to bringing Buddhism there. He combined Chinese medicine, martial arts and Indian healing arts, and built a foundation for Shaolin Kung Fu. Throughout its long history, Shaolin temple was destroyed several times by bandits, warlords, and even military forces, but it survived and reconstructed itself again and again. To protect itself against the aggressors and sometimes to defend the emperors, Shaolin temple has always maintained a martial art troupe. Shaolin martial monks have developed a system with the most extensive martial arts regimens for bare hands, kicking, short weapons, long weapons, and sparring. Many martial arts have since derived from Shaolin Kung Fu.

Shaolin Kung Fu Master Classes will be taught by Shaolin Temple coaches on Fri Oct. 11 at Shaolin Temple Cultural Center in Los Angeles.

On Friday Oct 11, Abbot Shi Yongxin, an accomplished Zen scholar and the head of Shaolin Temple in China, will host Puja ceremony at Shaolin Temple Cultural Center. You can watch a video Abbot Shi Yongxin via a link here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=16UkOyDSgSY.

The Kung Fu Competition will include 200 divisions in Shaolin Kung, other Traditional Chinese Martial Arts, Tai Chi (Taiji), Kenpo, Karate, and Group Performance. The grand champion will be awarded with a free 2-week Kung Fu training camp in Shaolin Temple in China. The Competition will be held on Saturday Oct 12 at the Los Angeles Convention Center.

Shaolin Warrior Certificate Exam will take place during the same time at the same location as the Competition. Students, who complete the Shaolin Temple Warrior Camp, are eligible for examination.

In the evening of Oct 12, there will be Shaolin Gala at the LA Convention Center. Shaolin Kung Fu masters will exhibit their astonishing arts as anticipated.

A three-day official Shaolin Warrior Coach Camp will be held on Oct 13-15 at Shaolin Temple Cultural Center.

On Sunday Oct. 13, a forum on Zen and Modern Life will explore the evolution of science, technology, and medicine from past tradition to modern life.

This event is organized by North America Shaolin Federation and Shaolin Temple Cultural Center USA, and supported by Kung Fu Tai Chi Magazine along with 24 Shaolin academies and martial art schools. I know, I know...Where is the UCLA talk on this? It's not on the official website because of an oversight. It is part of the official proceedings, or so I am told.

    And there's that moment...

...that moment when you are in the midst of the chaos of your own event and monk friends ask you to plug their event.
