What will happen when the sharpest spear meets the strongest shield?
If you tell me that when
- you have your opponent's wrist, you will apply a painful lock on him.
- your opponent has your wrist, you can take your hand away any time virtually as if it is not being held at all.
What will happen if you "travel back in time", meet yourself, and use your right hand to grab on the right wrist of "another you"?

Both the spear and shield will be broken. The defender will be left defenceless and the attacker will be defanged. Mutual destruction, either literal or metaphorical, is the reality behind a great many confrontations.
This is the fable behind the word 'MaoDun' meaning contradiction.

I don't know about the time travel question but I think the spear would loose. It's much harder to grip a spear under pressure than a supported shield. The shield is like a linebacker rushing you with all his weight behind it and a full arm through the handles on the shield. The spear only has the grip strength from one or two hands. When they meet the spear with either slip out of the spear fighters hands or break under the pressure.

I quoted the above comment from someone in another forum. I think it's interesting. It's just like to say,
- If you try to punch me, I'll take you down.
- If you try to take me down, I'll knock you out.
When a person said that, he may not know that he just presented a "paradox".

So he is just saying that his skill is better than the other guy's. Does not have to be a paradox.
When you talk about the best shield against the best spear, you are asking which would win when both are equally matched. By your implied definition, neither can win.
I was making a joke about Kobayashi Maru, the no-win situation.
But it is no different from any kind of fighting. If it's not working, then you have to change the game.
If you're going to say that no matter what you switch to, the other guy has a perfectly matched response, then by your definition, neither will win. In reality, that will not be the case, even if just by random chance.
You might as well argue about which super hero would kick the other one's @ss.

The best defense against the sharpest spear is to avoid or not to be hit. Stay away from his target point that is.
You may use your best shield to knock the spear off his hand from the side of the spear.
Avoid the strongest point and attack the weakest link.
Along the same idea,
You punch me. I avoid by an inch and I punch you back at the same time.
You take me down. I neutralize you by removing one of the elements. And I take you down.
That is the idea of Ba Ji.

For those that don't know Chinese idioms, YKW is posing a classic chengyu. We ran calligraphy for it in our JAN+FEB 2006 issue in our wisdom section. Often shortened to mao duan (spear shield) it means contradiction. It's actually quite fitting for our forum members here.

I know, for me, I would rather have a shield and no spear than a spear and no shield.
If two opponents meet with equal skill base, size, strength etc, doesn't it just come down to chance and who had the better day? Does the answer have to be one or the other? Can we talk averages?

The spear is used to signify offense.
The shield is used to mean defense.
When we learn a move or a throw, we need to analyze it in both ways.
What makes the offense work ?
Remove one of the elements to neutralize the move or throw.
What makes the defense work ?
Look for loop holes to introduce your offense.
It goes both way.
Timing and position.
When and where.
Never ending story or fun.

I use to think a lot about recoil force from a rifle and artillery.
If there is a force going one way, there will be an opposing force going the other way.
It all happens at the point of contact between you and your opponent.
And of course there is the gravity of the planet earth from your feet.
After a while.
I think about gravity and our feet/root more.
The force starts at our feet and goes right back there.
How to use the gravity or borrow from it, that is.
