XYZ to Produce and Handle Sales on Chilean Martial Arts Film REDEEMER

XYZ Films has announced that they will be executive producing and handling sales for the Spanish-language martial arts actioner REDEEMER (Redentor), which is headlined by Chilean action star Marko Zaror. Written and directed by Ernesto Diaz Espinoza, the film marks the fourth time that Espinoza and Zaror have worked together since 2006. It was produced by Espinoza, Zaror and Diego Moral Heimpell and is executive produced by XYZ Films. The film will begin principal photography on March 24th in Chile.

Former hitman Nicky Pardo (Zaror) has made a deal with God. Pardo will begin every day by holding a gun to his own head and pulling the trigger. And every day he does not die he will take it as a sign that he is meant to continue hunting down the men he used to work for.

Zaror has most recently been seen working in English opposite Scott Adkins (EXPENDABLES 2) as the principal villain in UNDISPUTED 3, and as Mel Gibson's primary henchman in MACHETE KILLS. He is a highly trained martial artist across multiple disciplines who - like Tony Jaa, Donnie Yen and Iko Uwais - performs all of his own fight and stunt work without the use of any wires or CGI tricks. Zaror's big break came when he was hired as Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson's body / stunt double on Peter Berg's THE RUNDOWN, for which he won multiple stunt awards. He then returned to Chile where he and Espinoza collaborated on KILTRO, the first martial arts film ever produced in all of South America.

Espinoza most recently handled editing duties on Eli Roth's Toronto festival title THE GREEN INFERNO. Apart from his work with Zaror, Espinoza was also included as a director on THE ABCs OF DEATH ANTHOLOGY and directed the festival hit BRING ME THE HEAD OF THE MACHINE GUN WOMAN.

XYZ executive produced and handled international sales on the hit action film THE RAID: REDEMPTION, which SPWA acquired and was released in the U.S. last year by Sony Pictures Classics. XYZ Films produced and is handling world sales on the sequel THE RAID 2, which SPWA also picked-up and Sony Pictures Classics is releasing in the U.S. on March 28th.

XYZ Films is handling international sales on several titles that recently premiered at Sundance including the competition film LIFE AFTER BETH, starring Aubrey Plaza, Dane DeHaan, Anna Kendrick, John C. Reilly, Molly Shannon, Matthew Gray Gubler, Cheryl Hines, and Paul Reiser; the Sundance Park City at Midnight title KILLERS, which was co-directed by Timo Tjahjanto and Kimo Stamboel (The Mo Brothers); and the horror film DEAD SNOW: RED VS. DEAD, which XYZ executive produced. They are also handling foreign sales on Kevin Smith's highly anticipated horror film TUSK, which is scheduled to be released later this year by A24. SPWA has also taken multiple territories on TUSK, including the United Kingdom, Italy and Latin America.

    About XYZ Films:

XYZ FILMS is an LA-based film production and sales company founded in 2008 by Bolotin, Spicer and Tertzakian, with partner Todd Brown joining the company in 2009.

Cool. I like Marko Zaror's work and will be looking forward to seeing this whenever it becomes available.

I think he would be outstanding as a villain in a Donnie Yen or Iko Uwais film. Maybe in a Tony Jaa movie, too, but I've kinda moved away from the Thai movies, which don't seem to have evolved, and seem to be devolving in many ways. And Marko certainly deserves to be in good movies.

‘Redeemer’: Marko Zaror Strikes In Trailer For Chilean Actioner – AFM
    by Jen Yamato
    November 7, 2014 8:37am

EXCLUSIVE: Here’s a first look at Redeemer, the Chilean action pic starring martial artist Marko Zaror that could help seal the imposing 6’3″ martial artist as the next international action star to watch. The Undisputed III and Machete Kills thesp stars as a brooding former cartel hitman who makes a promise to God to hunt down his former bosses and does so, in a hail of bullets and kicks to the head.

Exec producers and sales co. XYZ Films brought the pic to AFM where MPI’s Dark Sky Films took North American rights in a deal announced yesterday. The action-heavy teaser trailer should help spark international sales for the Spanish language actioner, which showcases a sampling of Zaror’s impressive physicality (the film includes some scenes in English, courtesy of Looper‘s Noah Segan as an entitled American wannabe drug lord).

Redeemer marks Zaror’s fourth film with director Ernesto Díaz Espinoza, who first cast Zaror in his 2006 debut, the martial arts actioner Kiltro. The two partnered again on Miragemen (2007) and Mandrill (2009), also filmed in their native Chile. Redeemer is produced by Alfonso Moral, Alvaro Moral, and Diego Moral’s Moral Bros. Entertainment.

Genre specialists XYZ are at AFM repping a slate that includes Redeemer and international rights to Yoga Hosers, Kevin Smith’s follow-up to Tusk starring Johnny Depp alongside Depp and Smith’s daughters Lily-Rose Depp and Harley Quinn Smith. They’re also selling Toa Fraser’s true story action thriller 6 Days, about the six-day siege of the Iranian embassy in London in 1980, and Irish action thriller Pilgrimage from Brendan Muldowney.
Really looking forward to this one.

If your fandom has at all kept you on high alert for action star Marko Zaror's fourth bow with director Ernesto Diaz Espinoza in their newest revenge action thriller, Redeemer, don't fret. Hopefully you've caught our latest interview with Zaror where he discusses the film in addition to a number of morsels revolving around his career with more projects to come, and I, for one, can't wait to share more information on those.

Otherwise, the most recent trailer for the film is viewable just beneath (oh, and the new poster with the subsequent dates as of this June 1 edit should suffice as well)!

First forum review! And this one is a big thumbs up!

It's packed with real horrorshow ultravi. Very satisfying.

It really wants to be a Robert Rodriguez film with it's gritty portrayal of the South American drug world. But Zaror's native Chile is more lush than Rodriguez's sun-bleached Mexico. Chile has it's own charm with cool seascapes and weather-worn ghettos covered in colorful graffiti. It feels more authentic than Rodriguez's Titty Twister bar, more original because how often do you see Chile in film? There's a strong Catholic theme, lots of crucifixes and pondering about divine justice, and that sort of works. It would have worked better with a stronger soundtrack, which started okay, but never went past two notes: a Giogio Moroder sound for the ponderous moments, and a kettle drum charge for the fights.

But still, it's all about the fights. Zaror is one of the leading choreographers going right now. The fights are merciless, witty and precise. Zaror has the body and the moves. He can catch great air for the flying kicks, roll well to nod to the MMA trend, and handle long complex sequences. Several dozen+ move sequences are shot with the camera actively circling around the fight, displaying a masterful command of action and cinematography. What I like most about Zaror is he throws feints well, which gives his choreography a refreshing level of second intention.

I also want Zaror's hoodies from this film. He lurks about in a cool jacket and shirt with super cool jedi hoods. More so, I want Zaror's build. He has built his body to go the distance. Alas, maybe next lifetime.

The best part is one of the main villains bears a strong resemblance to one of my old fencing friends. He's the only white villain, and I couldn't help but laughing at the resemblance. I can hardly wait for the chance to get together with that circle of friends and show this to them.
