    Li Ga Gao History

News story featuring the Li Ga Gao school started by Li SuQian in ****an village, which is located in Guantai town, puning county, jieyang prefecture, of eastern Guangdong province.
Li SuQian was one of the top students of Li GuangRen the 3rd generation inheritor of the style. Li GuangRen began training as a small child under his grandfather Li TieNiu "Iron Ox Li". He spent his life teaching his families style, traveling across eastern Guangdong to teach the art in various Hakka communities. In the 1930's upon hearing of the fighting skills of Thai boxers he traveled to Siam (Thailand) to compete in the open tournaments against the best Muay Thai experts. Since that time Li Ga Gao has enjoyed a good reputation as a fighting style across Southeast-Asia. He returned to China undefeated and continued to teach his art in many places, spreading the art from it's home in Meizhou to Chaozhou and Shantou prefectures.
Regarding the creation of Li Ga Gao it is said that around the year 1805 a member of the Li family was doing business in the area around the border between Fujian and Zhejiang. There he met a monk from the Southern Shaolin temple who took him on as a student. This monk had inherited the highest styles of the school from the Abbot and passed them on to his student. Upon returning home he instructed young Li TieNiu who soon mastered the arts and began to create a structured system of teaching. It is not clear whether this was Li TieNiu's father or uncle or both who learned from the monk.
