    The Raid *Hollywood* Remake

This first came up our Raid 3 thread and I blew it off. I completely blew it off after Raid 2. But it looks like it deserves it's own thread now.

There's a vid if you follow the link. Here's our original Raid thread, for good measure.
The Raid Remake Will Feature "A Clash of Fighting Styles"
Director reveals story and casting plans for U.S. remake.

01:20The Raid (Remake) - Director Interview

He hasn’t even finished The Expendables 3, but red-hot Australian director Patrick Hughes is already prepping his follow-up feature: the US remake of Indonesian (albeit directed by Welshman Gareth Evans) action masterpiece The Raid.

Action aficionados surely know this already, but The Raid came seemingly out of nowhere in 2012. The tale of a S.W.A.T. team sent into a Jakarta high-rise to take out a vicious mobster, only to get trapped and have to shoot, stab, punch and kick their way out, it blew fans away with its epic and inventive, fast and furious fight scenes. Its success, though modest by US box-office standards, means that even more ambitious sequel The Raid 2 is already assaulting audiences as we speak.

As with Hong Kong action cinema, however, The Raid had a very specific and proud national identity. Fans of the original could be forgiven for considering a Westernized version a betrayal; but Hughes’ take on why and what he wants his film to be may reassure them.

“It’s a phenomenal action film but unfortunately not enough people went and saw it,” says Hughes, buzzing with enthusiasm down the line from Bulgaria where he's still working on Expendables 3. “So what we’re doing with this [remake], it’s got a broader landscape to it and revolves around the world of the DEA FAST [Foreign-Deployed Advisory and Support Teams] Teams, which is a really interesting take on it.”

For the uninitiated, the Drug Enforcement Administration details its elite FAST tactical units as follows: “FAST units provide immediate tactical responses to emerging threats around the globe. Using training methods reserved for the nation’s most elite special operations forces, FAST units can rapidly deploy and bring to bear enormous firepower and tactical skill to eliminate or apprehend narcotics kingpins or terrorist leaders.” Uh-oh.

This potentially explains the issue of how an action movie firmly rooted in Indonesian martial artistry can translate to Hollywood. “Because it’s an American take,” continues Hughes, “in terms of the martial arts, you’re looking at a clash of cultures and also a clash of fighting styles.”

But even with a culture clash established, which US stars could legitimately perform to the level of Raid star Iko Uwais and his crew? Despite it being so early in pre-production Hughes seems very confident with the talent he’s scouting.

“It’s an ensemble piece but we’re looking at training [the actors] up,” he reveals. “Obviously I can’t name names yet but there are certain people that bring a skill set and there are certain people who are about to go into six months of training before we shoot.”

05:18Fight Scenes That Inspired The Raid 2
Lest anyone get the idea that Hughes is bringing the same expansive blockbuster tone required for an Expendables movie, he’s quick to flag up both his credentials – previous low-budget feature Red Hill was a much more intimate, character-based shoot-‘em-up – and what he wants to keep from the original Raid.

“Expendables 3 is a big fun popcorn movie,” he says, “and this will be a really nitty-gritty action movie. It has such a wonderful premise, it’s so simple and so raw and at the end of the day it’s a survival movie. Once the lights go out it becomes war and that’s certainly what appealed to me about it. My hope with the aesthetics and action set pieces aside, is to elevate it by matching the emotional ride and the action ride.” Buckle up.

Screen Gems Delays Production on ‘Raid’ Remake (EXCLUSIVE)

    May 27, 2014 | 04:21PM PT

    Film Reporter @krolljvar

Fans of the cult classic “The Raid” may have to wait a little bit longer to see how the Screen Gems remake turns out.

Sources close to the production tell Variety that plans to begin shooting the action pic in September have been pushed back and pre-production has been halted. Insiders add that the film isn’t being put into turnaround and that the plan is to still shoot in the first quarter of 2015.

The film was getting close to a greenlight as execs were zeroing on an ensemble with sources indicating that Luke Evans, Anthony Mackie, Frank Grillo and Ethan Hawke were frontrunners for roles. However, other insiders said no casting decisions had been made and no offers were sent out. It’s possible that one reason for the delay is that producers are seeking a bigger name.

Patrick Hughes is still on board to direct.

Brad Ingelsby penned the script. XYZ Films is producing the pic.

In the 2011 original, an elite Indonesian S.W.A.T. team raids a building where a gangster and his thugs are embedded and chaos ensues. The remake will have a similar storyline.
"The remake will have a similar storyline." Oh really? Imagine that.

    Kitsch

What happened to the delay? Can't they just delay this perpetually?
Taylor Kitsch Will Play The Lead In The Unnecessary Remake Of ‘The Raid’
    BY VINCE MANCINI / 08.04.14

    GETTY IMAGE

If you liked Taylor Kitsch as Gambit, you’re going to love him in the English-language remake of The Raid, for which he’s in negotiations to play the lead. Oh the lengths Hollywood thinks Americans will go to avoid reading.

While Kitsch’s team has been pushing HBO and “True Detective” creator Nic Pizzolatto to cast him as the young male lead of the second season, they’ve been positioning him for “The Raid” remake in the meantime.

Patrick Hughes (“The Expendables 3”) is directing the action movie, which is gearing up for a January 2015 shoot. Coincidentally, that is when the second season of “True Detective” is slated to wrap filming.

How’s that for your conspiracy theory of the day?

While two sources told TheWrap that Kitsch is in negotiations for “The Raid,” one cautioned that the two sides remain apart on financial terms of the proposed deal.
Representatives for Kitsch and Screen Gems did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
Brad Ingelsby (“Run All Night”) wrote “The Raid” remake, which is based on the original 2011 movie written and directed by Gareth Evans. [TheWrap]

Nothing against Taylor Kitsch, I thought he was decent in John Carter (underrated! I will go to my grave saying that!) and even decenter in Lone Survivor, and at the very least, he’s one of the least obnoxious “Taylors” we have. But, uh… isn’t The Raid a martial arts movie? As such, to remake it, don’t you need… you know… a martial artist? This is sort of like casting Shia Labeouf in a Tony Jaa remake. Or like casting Cate Blanchett in a big budget remake of Deep Throat. Like, I’m sure she’d bring gravitas, but that role involves a very particular skill.

    twelve main roles

Patrick Hughes Offers More ‘Raid’ Remake Details
Posted on Monday, August 18th, 2014 by Germain Lussier

    Patrick Hughes the raid remake

One of the biggest rules in Hollywood is lock up your next project before your current one hits theaters. That worked out well for director Patrick Hughes (left) this week. His latest film, The Expendables 3, grossed only $16.2 million on its opening weekend, which is half what the first film earned on its opening weekend in 2010. Despite the disappointing grosses, Hughes is already prepping a remake of The Raid and has Frank Grillo lined up for one of the leads.

Grillo, however, will have lots of company in the film, according to Hughes’ latest quote. The director said the film has about twelve main roles, revealing one of the ways they plan to account for not having Iko Uwais. Read more about The Raid remake below.

Hughes spoke to Grantland about Expendables 3 and briefly mentioned The Raid remake:

Stallone’s endorsement is already paying off for Hughes. As The Expendables 3 rolls into theaters, the director is prepping his next blockbuster: a remake of the 2011 Indonesian fight film The Raid: Redemption. He describes his version as being in the vein of Black Hawk Down and Zero Dark Thirty, signaling major departures. He’s casting the 12 integral roles of the film’s ensemble, with sights on shooting early next year. “After that, I’m pretty sure I won’t do a movie with ensembles, camouflage, and guns for a while.”

Both Black Hawn Down and Zero Dark Thirty are ensemble films. The original Raid is not. As stated in the quote, that’s a pretty radical departure, but a welcome one. Few people in the world can duplicate what Iko Uwais does in The Raid and its sequel. Trying might just be stupid. So if Hughes is taking the idea of the film, a skyscaper full of drug dealers, and twisting that to be about a team of cops attempting to infiltrate, that makes sense. It’s a little more familiar than the lone martial artists doing the same thing, but there is definitely potential there.

Of course, Hughes has hinted at this story before. He’s just never been so specific. Here’s an older quote about the film:

Certainly, we’re not there to recreate that film beat for beat, with the set up we’re following a DEA task team, which was implemented by the Bush administration after September 11th when they realized that terrorism and the drug trade were so closely aligned. So they set up a DEA task team that’s six units and they work across borders and sort of act like Navy SEALS. You never read about it, you never hear about it, but they go on these missions. So that’s a really interesting take and a really nice premise and also what’s interesting on this take on it is the clash of cultures and the clash of martial arts, the fighting styles, which is something that’s going to be a lot of fun when we’ve really started pre-vizzing stuff.

What do you think about this more expansive adaptation of The Raid remake?
I still think this is silly. But I'll have to go watch it. Just because.

    Joe Carnahan directing

Joe Carnahan was connected to the Death Wish remake, and is still on Bad Boys 3 and Jackie Chan's Five Against a Bullet.

Joe Carnahan and Frank Grillo Partner With XYZ Films on ‘Raid’ Reimagining

    FEBRUARY 15, 2017 | 02:58PM PT

Joe Carnahan and Frank Grillo’s WarParty production banner and XYZ Films have announced that they will partner on the reimagining of the hit Indonesian action film “The Raid,” which Carnahan will direct and write, and Grillo will star in.

The film will be produced by WarParty and XYZ. Gareth Evans, the martial arts auteur who directed the original “The Raid” pic, will executive produce.

Premiering in 2011 at the Toronto International Film Festival, the Indonesian martial-arts movie garnered widespread critical praise, rocketing to cult film status. The movie captured audiences with its inventive choreography and a lightning-paced narrative where a lone, isolated SWAT team is trapped by a ruthless mobster and his army of killers and thugs inside a tenement block, and they have to fight through to the top.

“I am extremely excited about Frank and I boarding this property and hopefully doing something fresh and inventive with it,” says Carnahan. “The original is masterful, so we’ve given ourselves a pretty big mountain to summit. But I have great faith in the story and approach to the material that we’ve taken.”

Produced by PT. Merantau Films and XYZ Films, the franchise has garnered success since its release, producing a sequel in 2014.

“Joe and Frank are ideal creative partners for this film,” XYZ added. “They want to pay homage to THE RAID, not do a paint-by-numbers remake.”

Screen Gems had been developing a reboot for sometime, but when the right package couldn’t be put together, the rights on the remake lapsed, leading to WarParty to step in and secure the rights.

WarParty is a newly launched production company helmed by Carnahan and Grillo. Formed in August 2016, it will look to option and develop material from all sources including books, magazines, and screenplays under a first look agreement. The company is expected to produce between 3 and 5 films per year including titles with franchise potential, with the first film expected to be available for sales by EFM 2017.

First up for the shingle is “Wheelman,” which was launched and sold worldwide to Netflix at the Cannes Market 2016 and looks to debut later this year. The high-concept action thriller, currently in post-production, was written and directed by Jeremy Rush and stars Grillo in the title role.

    What's up with Carnahan?

First he bails off Five Against a Bullet, and now this?

Whatcha gonna do when Carnahan doesn't come for you?

Bad Boys 3, a.k.a. Bad Boys for Life, has lost director Joe Carnahan.

An insider tells The Hollywood Reporter that the director has left due to scheduling conflicts, but other sources say it was the dreaded "creative differences."

The move is a setback for the project, which has been trying, in fits and stops, to get going after years of development. The involvement of Will Smith had forever been a question mark, but the actor finally committed and the studio, after shifting several times, had recently set a Nov. 8, 2018 release date. A start date in the fall was being eyed.

Carnahan wasn’t just the director for Bad Boys 3, but had also written the most recent draft of the script. Sources say a director search is already underway and a new writer may be hired as well. The project is a hot ticket because it is considered a go movie.

The project seeks to reteam Smith and Martin Lawrence as Miami detectives who leave a trail of mayhem in their wake as they take down bad guys. The first two installments, released in 1995 and 2003, were directed by Michael Bay.

Carnahan won’t be gathering moss, however. The director, whose recent fare has been on TV shows such as The Blacklist and Katherine Heigl’s State of Affairs, is actively developing an English-language remake of Indonesian action movie The Raid and wrote the script for the recently wrapped remake of Death Wish, which was directed by Eli Roth and stars Bruce Willis.

Exclusive: Joe Carnahan Reveals the Plot of His ‘The Raid’ Remake
BY ADAM CHITWOOD APRIL 22, 2019

It’s been a couple of years since we last heard word about the The Raid remake, but according to director Joe Carnahan, it may finally be happening soon. Carnahan sat down with Collider’s own Steve Weintraub recently to talk about the upcoming film El Chicano, which he co-wrote and produced, and the Smokin’ Aces filmmaker revealed that he’ll hopefully be starting prep on The Raid in the next few weeks.

The film is based on director Gareth Evans’ 2011 Indonesian action thriller of the same name, with Frank Grillo set in the starring role. As for how Carnahan’s version will differ, he described to Collider the opening of the film, and how it sets up the fact that Grillo’s character is already in rough shape before the titular raid begins:

“You meet Frank’s character having just rotated back from a really, really, brutal special forces operation. He’s got soft tissue damage in his hands, and his rotator cuff is blown out, and they take fluid off his knees, and the doctors basically tell him, “Listen you’re at the razor’s edge of PTSD and you need three months of just nothing, some R&R, because you’re jacked up.’ And in that space he gets the message that his brother, who he thought had been dead for four years, is actually alive and working for a very bad guy in Caracas, and in 18 hours they’re gonna kill his brother. These forces are gonna descend and murder the bad guy and murder the brother, so do you wanna go and get your brother, who you thought is dead? Do you want that opportunity? So that’s where we start.”

    Image via Sony Pictures Classics

As for how he could possibly top the action in Evans’ film, which boasts some insane fight choreography, Carnahan said he aims to infuse each action sequence in his The Raid remake with an intense level of emotion:

“I want the entire movie to feel like the knife fight between Adam Goldberg and the German in Saving Private Ryan. Everything. In every great action film there’s always an emotional quotient that you’re dealing with… You have to have a sense of stakes. For all of the tremendous excess of those last two Matrix films, which I enjoyed the hell out of, they never really got to the tension of just Keanu Reeves trying to answer a phone at the end of the first movie. There was great pathos, there was a great sense of, ‘Is he gonna make it?’ The spectacle I think outweighs the heart and soul of it, and that’s what you have to remember is you’ve gotta have that attached.”

It’s still unclear when, exactly, Carnahan’s The Raid remake will happen, but with him noting that pre could be underway in the next couple of weeks, we could be hearing some big news about the project soon.

Look for our full interview with Carnahan on Collider next week.
I guess we'll have to tune in again next week.

Joe Carnahan’s The Raid Remake Won’t Be ‘So Heavily Fight-Based’

Exclusive: Joe Carnahan and Frank Grillo are remaking the Indonesian action classic, The Raid. Or are they?
    By Don Kaye
    |
    March 9, 2021

    Photo: Netflix
Fresh off this past weekend’s release of Boss Level, and with his next film Copshop already in post-production, writer/director Joe Carnahan now hopes to turn his attention to his next project: a long-developing remake of the 2011 Indonesian action/crime thriller, The Raid (known in the U.S. as The Raid: Redemption).

Or maybe not. Asked about the project, which was first announced with a different director in 2014 before Carnahan came aboard three years later, Carnahan says that the English-language version of the stunning original has drifted away from being a true remake.

“It’s our version of The Raid,” says Carnahan about the film, which will be produced for Screen Gems through his and actor Frank Grillo’s Warparty production banner. “I wrote that in a very modular way, so we had a disagreement with the existing property holders. We could kind of segue out, and we’d have our own version of that.”

Carnahan continues, “Listen, I did a movie about people assaulting a penthouse and going after a guy six years before The Raid. Smokin’ Aces was also in that vein. So it’s not like I’m re-lifting materials from that movie. But our script is very, very different. It’s not so heavily fight-based. There’s a ton of fights in there, but that’s not the linchpin of the movie.”

The original The Raid was directed by Welsh filmmaker Gareth Evans (Netflix’s Apostle) and starred Indonesian actor and martial artist Iko Uwais as Rama, a rookie cop who joins a dangerous mission to infiltrate a high-rise apartment tower controlled by a powerful drug lord. The grueling journey up to the top floor–where the crime boss Tama is situated–is marked by pitched, intensely violent, and gruesome battles between the cops and Tama’s minions. Along the way there are also betrayals, secret agendas revealed, and more.

The original, a jaw-dropping ballet of incredibly staged fighting and bloodshed, introduced the world to pencak silat, a full-body style of Indonesian martial arts that is as relentless psychologically as it is physically. The Raid earned rave reviews from critics around the world and was a success in limited release, leading Evans and Uwais to return for a sequel, The Raid 2, in 2014.

Carnahan is right about the “assault on a large building to get one person” narrative: his own Smokin’ Aces featured a bevy of FBI agents and assassins invading a Lake Tahoe hotel to nab a would-be crime boss, while 2012’s Dredd–released shortly after The Raid–featured the title character assaulting a 200-story apartment block to capture the drug lord Ma-Ma (Lena Headey) at all costs.

But The Raid arguably did it with a stylization and level of violence not quite matched by Western movies, and it should be interesting to see how Carnahan handles the material.

“I’m excited to go and put that thing together, and try to get that that film made,” he says, noting that the plan is for Grillo–who’s been attached since 2014–to star in it.

The director reaffirms that he doesn’t see it as a straight remake: “No, not at all… I think it’s a completely separate franchise, if you want my honest opinion.”

In the meantime, if you want another high-octane dose of Carnahan and Grillo’s brand of hyper-intense, insanely violent action, Boss Level is now streaming on Hulu.

    Bay & Hughes

Michael Bay, Gareth Evans And Patrick Hughes Team On New Reimagining Of Evans’ ‘The Raid’ For Netflix
    By Justin Kroll
    Senior Film Reporter
    @krolljvar

    January 10, 2022 1:00pm

EXCLUSIVE: Three of the biggest action directors in the game are coming together to help give a new spin on one of the decade’s most acclaimed action pics. Sources tell Deadline that Netflix has come aboard a new reimagining of Gareth Evans’ cult classic The Raid, tapping Patrick Hughes to direct with Michael Bay and XYZ Films on board to produce. Evans will exec produce along with Range Media Partners, which reps all three talents. Hughes will co-write the script with James Beaufort.

The original film was written and directed by Evans and followed an elite Indonesian S.W.A.T. team that becomes trapped in a tenement run by a ruthless mobster and his army of killers and thugs. The film premiered at the 2012 Toronto Film Festival and earned instant praise for its insane action sequences and turned Evans into one of the festival’s biggest stars. Sony Pictures Classics would release the film, which gained a cult fan base that would lead to a sequel The Raid 2.

Hollywood has been trying to reboot the title ever since and this looks like the one that will finally make it to production. This version is set in Philadelphia’s drug-infested “Badlands,” where an elite undercover DEA task force climbs a ladder of cartel informants to catch an elusive kingpin.

“We’re incredibly excited about Patrick’s unique vision for this film. It’s a distinctly original take on the material, which promises to pay great respect to the original film while also bringing a fresh approach and perspective that will set its own course in the action genre,” the producers said.

The package has been in the works for some time and insiders say it all came together after the rights lapsed on the most recent try at a reboot. Once that happened, Bay and Hughes’ rep at WME suggested taking a shot at getting involved in rebooting it, and both were game. Since both shared reps, sources add that an introduction was made between Bay and Hughes, who instantly hit off as they are both made from the same cloth given their high-octane action ties. On top of that, Hughes’ new take on the story excited all those involved including Bay and Evans, and after taking the package around town, Netflix was aggressive to get into pole position to land the package. It recently closed the deal following a lengthy negotiation.

Hughes has quickly become one of the go-to directors in town when it comes to big action movies following his breakthrough work on The Expendables 3. He has since directed the box office hit The Hitman’s Bodyguard and its sequel The Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard. Next up for Hughes is the action comedy The Man From Toronto starring Kevin Hart and Woody Harrelson.

Hughes, Bay and Evans are all repped by Range Media Partners. Bay and Evans are also repped by WME and Evans is also repped by Management 360.
