Actually 350+ isn't that much for China. We had around 300 for our 2018 KUNG FU TAI CHI DAY.

The opening ceremony of the 2019 "Belt and Road" Tai Chi Tour was held in Chenjiagou, Wenxian county, Jiaozuo, Central China's Henan province on Sept 2, commencing a two-week cultural tour through 200 domestic cities and 36 foreign cities.

Tai chi, a traditional Chinese form of shadowboxing, is a treasured aspect of Chinese traditional martial arts.

The tour, themed as "Sharing tai chi, Sharing health", aims to promote tai chi as a method of exercise to boost health and carry forward the Chinese culture in cities participating in the Belt and Road initiative.

The event will run from Sept 2 to 15, with millions of tai chi lovers participating in 200 domestic cities, including Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou and Guizhou, and 36 foreign cities, including New York, Berlin and Seoul.

The opening ceremony took place in Chenjiagou, tai chi's birthplace, where Chen Wangting created tai chi by adapting aspects of other martial arts and integrating the ideas of Yi-ology and traditional Chinese medicine in the mid-17th century.

Dressed in white tai chi suits, more than 10,000 tai chi lovers performed Chen Style tai chi (Old form) together at the Culture International Exchange Center Square, in the Ancestral Shrine outside the tai chi Museum and in three other places.

The 10,000 performers then sang songs expressing their love for tai chi and China. They also arranged the words "Long live the motherland" using their bodies to pay tribute to tai chi and celebrate the country's upcoming 70th birthday, which will fall on Oct 1.

"Wenxian county will be a good host for the tai chi gala, and work hard to expand the influence of tai chi," said Mao Wenming, Party secretary of Wenxian county.

Int'l conference in China's Wudang Mountains promotes Tai Chi
Published: Oct. 24, 2023 at 5:18 AM PDT
WUHAN, China, Oct. 24, 2023 /PRNewswire/ -- The World Conference on Wudang Tai Chi opened Monday at the foot of Wudang Mountains, a UNESCO World Heritage site, in central China's Hubei Province, in a move aimed at promoting Chinese traditional culture and exchanges between civilizations.

Opening Ceremony of the World Wudang Tai Chi Conference(PRNewswire)

Over 2,000 participants from 33 countries and regions gathered in Wudang Mountain Tourist and Economic Special Zone, Shiyan City for the conference, which runs through Wednesday, according to the Organizing Committee.

Major events include an international Tai Chi competition, a forum on the Tai Chi culture, a youth arts festival, a cultural heritage exploration and health consultations by traditional Chinese medicine experts.

An opening ceremony that featured traditional Taoist music, international video connections and a mass Tai Chi demonstration was held at the Yuxu Palace, one of the largest monasteries among the Wudang architectural complex, showcasing the historical significance and profound influence of Wudang Tai Chi culture to on-site and online audiences.

For centuries, Wudang Mountains have been known as an important center of Taoism, especially famous for its Taoist versions of martial arts or Tai Chi. The ancient palaces and temples here represent the highest standards of Chinese art and architecture over a period of nearly 1,000 years.

"Over 500 million people from 150 countries and regions practice Tai Chi and about 30,000 foreigners visit Wudang annually for Tai Chi studies," said Wang Zhonglin, Governor of Hubei Province, in his opening speech.

He said that the Tai Chi culture, which had originated in Wudang, advocates the philosophical concept of harmony between nature and man, conveying the ideas of benevolence and inclusivity.

Huang Jianxiong, Party chief of the CPC Shiyan municipal committee, said that Tai Chi, as "a crystallization of Chinese traditional culture and an optimal activity for physical fitness", enjoys global popularity and that the conference aimed to foster a fusion of sports, culture, and travel development.

The Wudang Tai Chi International Fellowship Competition kicked off on Sunday. The competition is divided into five age groups: children, youth, young adults, middle-aged adults and seniors. A total of 1,503 athletes registered, including 128 from overseas.
