Guardians of the Galaxy tops China box office

Marvel Studios LLC continues its winning streak in China as Guardians of the Galaxy topped the Mainland box office.
In its first three days in cinemas, the James GUNN film made RMB185 million (US$30.2 million) from approximately 4.74 million admissions. Released only in 3-D, the sci-fi film represented approximately 39.2% of all screenings nationwide.
In April, Captain America: The Winter Soldier made RMB224 million (US$36.6 million) from approximately 5.17 million admissions over the three-day Ching Ming holiday weekend. It secured RMB720 million (US$118 million) during its theatrical run.
Nonetheless, Guardians has by far the best weekend for a Marvel Studios origin film in China. Three years ago, Captain America: The First Avenger (2011) opened with RMB34.3 million (US$5.60 million), for a total of RMB98.1 million (US$16 million).
Ning Hao's Breakup Buddies 心花路放 dropped to second place with RMB99.8 million (US$16.3 million) between Friday and Sunday. After 13 days, it has made RMB931 million (US$152 million).
At its current rate, road movie comedy is expected to break the RMB1 billion (US$163 million) mark by this weekend, making it the second domestic film to do so in 2014. Lost in Thailand 人再囧途之泰囧 (2012) took 21 days to reach the RMB1 billion mark in 2012. Earlier this year, The Monkey King 西遊記之大鬧天宮 took 23 days.
The only other new film to reach the top ten is domestic monster film Bugs 3D食人虫. Released only in 3-D, it made RMB12.13 million (US$1.98 million) from approximately 328,000 admissions. Two years ago, Million Dollar Crocodile 百萬巨鰐 (2012) opened with RMB6.50 million (US$1.06 million) for a total of RMB12.9 million (US$2.10 million) during its theatrical run.
Peter Chan's Dearest 親愛的 dropped to third place with RMB22.3 million (US$3.65 million) between Friday and Sunday. The child abduction drama has made RMB292 million (US$47.7 million) after 18 days.
Black & White: The Dawn of Justice 痞子英雄 黎明再起 was fifth place with RMB10.5 million (US$1.71 million) between Friday and Sunday. The 3-D action sequel has made RMB187 million (US$30.6 million) after 12 days.
With RMB4.05 million (US$661,000) between Friday and Sunday, Ann HUI 許鞍華's The Golden Era 黃金時代 has made RMB44.12 million (US$7.20 million) after 12 days.
Ice Age: The Meltdown (2006) returned to Chinese cinemas yesterday with a special 3-D re-release.
In Hong Kong, Gone Girl became the top film this weekend due to the lack of any strong newcomers. The David FINCHER mystery-drama made HK$3.92 million (US$505,720) from 36 locations between Thursday and Sunday. After 11 days in cinemas, it has made HK$10.3 million (US$1.33 million).
Last week's top film Dracula Untold dropped to second place with HK$2.06 million (US$265,750) between Thursday and Sunday. It has made HK$9.83 million (US$1.27 million) after 11 days.
The top new film was spy thriller The November Man. From 34 locations, it made HK$1.69 million (US$218,000) from 34 locations over four days.
Doze NIU 鈕承澤's Paradise in Service 軍中樂園 opened in 8th place. From 12 locations, the military drama made HK$204,000 (US$26,400) over four days. Including previews, the Golden Scene Co Ltd 高先電影有限公司 release has made a total of HK$225,000 (US$28,900). Two years ago, Niu's Love 愛 (2012) opened with HK$2.71 million (US$350,000) from 28 screens. It made a total of HK$6.20 million (US$799,000) during its theatrical run.
After two weekends, Flirting in the Air 唐伯虎衝上雲宵 has made HK$4.81 million (US$620,000) and McDull: Me & My Mum 麥兜 我和我媽媽 has made HK$2.67 million (US$345,000). The Maze Runner has made HK$31.2 million (US$4.02 million) after four weekends.
In Taiwan, Hollywood films dominated the three-day National Day holiday weekend. Dracula Untold was the top film, making NT$21.4 million (US$704,000) from 22 Taipei locations over four days, including NT$17.9 million (US$589,000) between Friday and Sunday.
Gone Girl opened in second place. From 18 Taipei locations, the mystery drama made NT$10.4 million (US$341,000) over four days, including NT$9.17 million (US$301,000) between Friday and Sunday. In Dec 2011, Fincher's, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (2011) opened with NT$5.61 million (US$184,000) in Taipei, ending its run with NT$20.8 million (US$683,000).
Opening at only 12 locations in Taipei (and 39 locations nationwide), Studio Ghibli スタジオジブリ's When Marnie was There 思い出のマーニー opened in 8th place with NT$1.00 million (US$32,900) over four days. In June, The Tale of Princess Kaguya かぐや姫の物語 opened with NT$330,000 (US$10,900) from 13 Taipei locations. It made a total of NT$1.12 million (US$286,000) in the capital.
In its second weekend, Black & White: The Dawn of Justice dropped to fifth place with NT$2.66 million (US$87,400) between Friday and Sunday. After eight days, the action sequel has made only NT$12.3 million (US$406,000) in the capital.
Domestic air force drama Dream Flight 想飛 made NT$675,000(US$22,200) from three days of preview shows in 18 Taipei locations. The film officially opens in Taiwan cinemas this weekend.
