    World Youth Olympic Games scandal...

...cuz it just wouldn't be games in China without scandal.
Chinese Officials Organize International Events, Go to Prison
By Lu Chen, Epoch Times | August 24, 2014

A general view of the Olympic Rings during the opening ceremony for the Nanjing 2014 Summer Youth Olympic Games on Aug. 16, in Nanjing, China. An online post about how the official who organized this event, and other officials who organized similar international events, have been fired for corruption went viral on the Chinese Internet. When the World Youth Olympic Games opened in Nanjing on Aug. 16, the capital of Jiangsu Province on China’s coast, the official who had brought those games to the city was sitting in prison. So, too, were several other high-profile officials responsible for international events in China.

In a microblog post on the evening the World Youth Olympic Games opened, the Chinese writer and political commentator Xu Shaolin relayed the fate of several high-ranking officials responsible for international events in China: “When the Beijing Olympics Games opened in 2008, the former president of Olympic bid, Chen Xitong, was in prison. When the World Expo opened in 2010, the official who submitted the expo application, Chen Liangyu, was in prison. When the World University Games opened in 2011, the official who applied for those games, Xu Zongheng, was in prison. When the World Youth Olympic Games opened in 2014, the official who applied, Ji Jianye, appreciated the fireworks in prison.”

Xu sarcastically noted, “Serious reminder: Events have risks, be cautious with applications!” His post went viral.

Chen Xitong, the former mayor of Beijing, served as the director of 2000 Olympic Games bid in 1991. In what was widely seen as a political prosecution by then-Chinese Communist Party head Jiang Zemin, Chen was investigated in 1995 for economic corruption and was sentenced to prison in 1998 for 16 years for corruption and dereliction of duty.

During the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games, Chen was given permission to watch the Olympic Games during medical parole. Chen passed away in prison due to illness in June 2013.

The other three officials mentioned by the blogger Xu have close ties with Jiang Zemin. Since the announcement on July 30 that his confidant Zhou Yongkang, former czar of the security system, was being investigated, Jiang is believed to be the next target of the anti-corruption campaign.

Ji Jianye, the former mayor and Party head of Nanjing City, was dismissed last October and put under detention by Chinese New Year’s, suspected of economic corruption. The Chinese media reported Ji was involved in sex scandals, including promoting female subordinates in exchange for sex.

Ji served as mayor of Yangzhou City of Jiangsu for eight years, and has close ties with former leader Jiang Zemin whose hometown is Yangzhou, which borders Nanjing.

Chen Liangyu, who brought the World Expo to China, Jiang’s subordinate as a district mayor in Shanghai when Jiang Zemin was the Party chief in Shanghai. Chen was promoted with Jiang’s help, and eventually became a Politburo member. Chen was investigated in 2006, and sentenced to a 19-year prison term in 2008 for taking bribes and abuse of power.

Xu Zongheng has close ties with the former Party chief of Shenzhen City, Huang Liman, who was Jiang’s secretary and mistress in 1980s’, according to inside sources. Xu climbed high in officialdom under the protection of Huang and Jiang.

Xu Zongheng was arrested in 2009, and in 2011 was sentenced to death, with the sentence immediately suspended, for buying official positions and taking over 2 billion yuan ($325 million) in bribes. Chinese media reported Xu had dozens of mistresses.

Many netizens responded to Xu Shaolin’s post about the four officials now in prison with the view that official corruption in China has become so widespread that it’s hard to find a good official.

“There’s no good official now … those events don’t really matter,” netizen “Xingfushuok” remarked.

Netizen “ShangbinCN” mocked, “These corrupt officials have created miracles for China.”

    Still pitchin the Olympics

Skateboarding would make a good Olympic sport...
Wushu makes its pitch at Youth Olympics
Nick Zaccardi Aug 23, 2014, 3:22 PM EDT

The Youth Olympics are providing a showcase not only for the world’s best teenage athletes, but also a few sports that would like to one day be part of the Olympic program.

Wushu, sports climbing, roller skating and skateboarding are not being officially contested in Nanjing, but they are on display at what’s called the Sports Lab in the Chinese city.

All have a ways to go to be considered on the Olympic program. Last year, wrestling won a vote for one open spot in the 2020 and 2024 Olympics over baseball and softball and squash.

International Olympic Committee president Thomas Bach paid a visit to the Sports Lab this week and called wushu a sport with “dynamism and grace.” Wushu originated in China as a practice of self defense and physical training and developed into competitive martial arts.

The sport includes swords, which made it right up Bach’s alley. Bach won 1976 Olympic fencing gold. Here are photos of Bach and Wushu performers in Nanjing, via Getty Images:

    So much for the wulin...

    That's a pun - wuLIN - get it?

Nanjing lines streets with trees ahead of Youth Olympic Games, all die

In an effort to spruce (heh) up the city for the Nanjing 2014 Summer Youth Olympic Games, trees were planted along the roadside near the Olympic Village in Nanjing's Jianye district before the opening of the event in August.

The Summer Youth Olympic Games is an international sports, education and cultural festival for teens featuring everything from archery to Taekwondo. The event kicked off on August 16 and ran until the 28th. Sadly, the trees wouldn't live to see many days after that.

Empty plots spaced out along the side of the road are now the only visible trace of evidence that any trees existed at all, still fresh with upturned soil piled around glaring pits from where the roots had been pulled.

The roadside trees simply withered up, according to reports. Local garden workers blamed counter-season planting as the major cause of the trees' deaths, but we suspect something more sinister.
